We’ve been documenting on our Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section the success that Marist College has been having in landing commitments from Long Island standouts as they have occurred.
Marist has spread its wings recruiting wise.
The Red Foxes’ latest verbal comes from New Jersey.
Marist’s fifth 2015 tristate commitment was made by Thomas Rago, an attackman at Morristown-Beard School (N.J.), whose verbal was first reported by Joe Lombardi on Lacrosse Insider.
The 6-foot, 170-pound righty is an outstanding off-ball player who is effective operating just outside the crease.
“I think my diversity as a player is a strength,” Rago said. “If the crease is jammed up, I have no problem with going to X and starting a dodge to create space.”
An outstanding athlete, he also plays varsity ice hockey.
Rago plays for the Patriots travel teams and participated in Prep Showcase, Black Card, National Invitational 175, NSCLA, Legacy Cup, King of the Hill and Jersey Shootout.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Thomas on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Some main factors on my decision were the coaching staff. (Marist Head) Coach (Keegan) Wilkinson really made me feel at home with the way he approached things. (Marist Assistant) Coach (Mike) Gongas I previously knew at Sacred Heart and when he moved to Marist, I was pumped. He has really been with me the whole way. Also, I feel the school is the right fit for me and I love the location.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Lafayette, St. Joe’s, Providence and Rutgers. I visited all of them except Rutgers.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on turning and shooting from X,. That is the hardest thing for me — to get my hands free enough and get a shot coming from X.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse from my cousins Niklas Hedengren and Christian Hedengren.
