From press release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse varsity scored six straight goals in the second half to break open a tight game and defeat the Alumni All-Stars, 13-10, in the fourth-annual Orange Alumni Lacrosse Classic Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Carrier Dome. Kevin Rice (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and Dylan Donahue (Camillus, N.Y.) each had three goals to lead the current team to its fourth straight win in the yearly event.

All three of Donahue’s goals came in the first half. Rice scored twice in the second quarter and once during the Varsity’s game-clinching, second-half run. Rice also added an assist to finish with a team-high four points.

“This is the best go we’ve had against the Alumni so far,” Orange head coach John Desko said. “I think they played well. They were organized. They had a lot of good players from top to bottom and they gave us a great run. We learned a lot about ourselves today”

The Alumni All-Stars showcased their skills frequently early on, scoring three of the game’s first four goals. Donahue and Rice answered, combining for four tallies in a 5-0 scoring spurt that gave the Varsity a 6-3 advantage with 5:31 left in the second quarter. Alumni goals by Joel White and Steven Brooks closed the gap to 6-5 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Alumni All-Stars opened up a 7-6 advantage on goals by Kenny Nims and Matt Abbott. However, Abbott’s goal off a feed from Dan Hardy proved to be the Alumni’s last until late in the fourth quarter as the Varsity defense held them scoreless for the next 22 minutes.

The Varsity took full advantage of the Alumni dry spell. Six different Varsity players scored during the Alumni drought to turn a one-goal deficit into a 12-7 lead with less than four minutes to play. Ryan Simmons capped the run by picking up a rebound and scoring easily with 3:26 remaining.

Following Simmons’ goal, the Alumni All-Stars scored three times in the span 1:34 to cut the lead to 12-10, but their rally came up short.

Tommy Palasek led the Alumni All-Stars with four points on two goals and two assists. Nims (two goals, one assist) and Hardy (one goal, two assists) both finished with three points.

The SU Varsity used four different goalies. Each one played a quarter. Rookie Parker Ferrigan (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had a game-high six saves in the fourth period.

Current Orange goalies Tyler Avallone (Chester, N.J.) and Evan Molloy (Manhasset, N.Y.) split time in the cage for the Alumni All-Stars. Molloy had four saves and Avallone made two stops.

For the third year in a row, the Orange Alumni Lacrosse Classic featured a Legend’s Game prior to the main event. The teams played two 25-minute halves of running time with Team White defeating Team Blue, 11-9. George Clements led Team White with three goals (all in the first half). Andy Joyce paced Team Blue with two goals and two assists.

Saturday’s exhibition was Syracuse’s last fall scrimmage. Spring practice for the upcoming 2014 season begins in January.
