The role lacrosse has played in Parker Widhelm’s family spans generations.
Widhelm’s grandather, Gus Widhelm, a product of the Gilman School in Baltimore, was an All-America defender at Johns Hopkins in 1959.
“I have grown up with him talking about his time playing,” Widhelm.
One day, Parker, who also plays defense, may have a similar opportunity to share memories of his college playing days.
After being recruited by several major Division I programs, Widhelm, a 2-15 D/LSM from St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Va., has committed to Furman University, a verbal first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot-4, 190-pound righty is an outstanding athlete (he also plays football and basketball) who is effective at getting up and down the field and making plays in transition.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Parker on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
(Furman Head) Coach (Richie) Meade and his staff really made me feel welcome and wanted during my visit, and I liked the challenge of a start-up program that could potentially do really well in the upcoming years.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Syracuse, Loyola and UMass.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Off-ball.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played with Amped at Gait Cup and King of the Hill, and I played with Militia at Carolina Shootout and Patriot Games.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my parents and little brother for being really helpful with their support throughout the process. I would also like to thank Coaches Burke, Horner, Hawthorne, Chriss and Sheridan. Teammate Thomas Cottrell has also been a big help.
