Chris Cunnington first became drawn to lacrosse thanks to his passion for hockey.
“I have always been a huge hockey fan and played all my life, so I decided to try the next best sport with a stick, lacrosse,” he said. “After a few camps at a very young age, I decided to quit baseball and stick with lacrosse.”
That decision has paid off for the senior defenseman at Yorktown High School (N.Y.), who last week verballed to Division III power Springfield College, a commitment first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Cunnington is a strong position defender sees the field well, communicate with others on my team and my stick stills to pick up ground balls and move the ball to the offense. You can watch his highlight reel here.
Cunnington’s verbal gives Yorktown eight Class of 2014 college commits.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Chris on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factor of my decision was to get a great education. Springfield offers many majors that am interested in. Also, the coaching staff and team. Both are amazing. I found that out very shortly after arrived at the school.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Ithaca College and Western New England University. I visited both schools a few times which made the decision even harder.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
My footwork and speed.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played with the Cortlandt Wave for one year and then with the No Limit Ballers for the next three years. I attended the Peak 200 Showcase along with the Island Uprising showcase last fall and summer.
Any final thoughts?
I am really looking forward to being a part of the Springfield College lacrosse program. And I’d like to thanks all the coaches I played for throughout my lacrosse career and especially my parents.
