The state of Tennessee is not exactly synonymous with lacrosse.
But it’s where Ben Lucas has found his future college home.
The Millbrook School (N.Y.) two-way midfielder verballed to the up-and-coming program at Sewanee, the University of the South, a verbal first reported last week by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
“I really felt at home in Tennessee and on the Sewanee campus and from the time I first visited I knew it was the place for me.,” said the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior.
Lucas is a strong, physical and athletic two-way midfielder who played this past summer for the Prime Time 2014 travel team. He played at Battle of the Hotbeds, King of the Hill, NYLA Showcase, Tri-State, MVP and NE Top 150.
“Although I played mainly offense for Prime Time, I played a lot of both during the school year,” he said. “I would say that one of my strengths is dodging downhill and shooting on the run.”
Lucas also plays soccer and hockey.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Ben on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Sewanee provides me with a perfect mix of academics and athletics. (Sewanee Head) Coach (Marty) Watters’ program is a successful one that has continued to get better every year and one that I wanted to be a part of.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Union, Haverford, Ohio Wesleyan, Stevens and Kenyon.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to continue to develop my lacrosse IQ.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I got introduced to lacrosse through Doug Marr, who started the youth program in my town when I was in sixth grade.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank Prime Time Director Nick Daniello as well as Millbrook coach Tom Spinella for helping me throughout the process. I’d also like to thank Coach Watters from Sewanee for providing me with the opportunity to play for him for the next four years.
