From press release

BALTIMORE, Oct. 4, 2013 — US Lacrosse today announced the final rules revisions for the 2014 US Lacrosse boys’ youth lacrosse rules. The 2014 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced its boys’ lacrosse rules for the 2013-2014 season in August, which are written with the guidance of US Lacrosse. The youth rules are a product of modifications to the NFHS rules, and are written by the US Lacrosse Men’s Game Rules Subcommittee with guidance and approval from the US Lacrosse Men’s Game Committee.

“US Lacrosse and the NFHS continue to focus on player safety as one of the main objectives for the responsible growth of the sport,” said Stephen Berger, men’s game director at US Lacrosse. “We believe that with the adjustments made this year to last year’s rules, we will continue to increase the positive, responsible growth of the boys’ game and ensure a positive experience is had by everyone on and off the field.”

The NFHS boys’ lacrosse rules and the US Lacrosse boys’ youth lacrosse rules revisions share multiple points of emphasis for the 2013-2014 season, with a special focus on playing by age-specific rules. Both organizations endorse wearing equipment properly, eliminating slashing, and playing by standardized lacrosse ball specifications. US Lacrosse also added violent collisions and sportsmanship to its points of emphasis.

The US Lacrosse boys’ youth lacrosse rules carry the overarching theme of proper development of individual stick skills, team play, player safety and sportsmanship.

The NFHS and US Lacrosse rule revisions include the elimination of substitution horns, an expanded substitution and table area – following suit with an NCAA rules change – and an emphasis on using three officials to control the game. The revisions also place additional emphasis on body checks that target a defenseless player and on checks to the head or neck by increasing the penalty time to a two- or three-minute non-releasable foul.

US Lacrosse youth rules continue to require that all players participating wear a protective cup, arm pads – including the goalie – gloves, shoulder pads, helmet, shoes and mouth guard.

The 2014 NFHS boys’ rules and 2014 US Lacrosse boys’ youth rules are in effect for fall 2013 competition.
