If you were with us on Lacrosse Insider earlier this week, you already know that Penn has become the second Ivy League second to garner a rising sophomore tristate commitment.
The first came when we first reported that midfielder Cooper Telesco of Ridgewood, N.J., committed to the admissions process at Cornell.
Joe Lombardi is now reporting that a Hudson Valley 2016 standout has decided on the Quakers.
He also becomes the first 2016 commit for the Trinity-Pawling School (N.Y.).
He’s longstick midfielder Skyler Mickunas.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Mickuna was a two-year varsity standout at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, Mass., before transferring to T-P, where he has entered the Class of 2016.
He is an athletic and rangy righty defender with outstanding stick skills who has a knack at coming away with groundballs and starting unsettled situations.
“I play an aggressive style of defense and really enjoy playing on-ball when my teammates lock off adjacents,” Mickunas said.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Skyler on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
What Penn had to offer academically was a huge factor, and I knew I wanted to head south. Philadelphia has a feel similar to Boston and I felt right at home while visiting the campus.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering UNC and Michigan mostly and visited UNC, Hoftsra and Penn. I also had plans to visit Ohio State and Dartmouth.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Footwork. With midfielders getting bigger and faster, footwork will become more important when defending dodgers and will be a valuable asset to my game with a little improvement.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
When I was young, I never had the patience for baseball, but I enjoyed playing sports all year round. With basketball and football taking up fall and winter, I decided to give lacrosse a shot per the recommendation of one of my friends and I loved it.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Top Gun Fighting Clams. Past showcases include the Philly Showcase, the Prep School Showcase, and many tournaments with the clams including Hotbeds and the Baltimore Kickoff.
Congrats Skyler!
Sounds like he has a tremendous upside. Welcome to the Penn Family.
