Colin Burke first made a splash on the recruiting scene in 2012 when he was named Nassau co-MVP of the Long Island Showcase Nassau vs. Suffolk rising sophomore game.
Now, Burke, a Class of 2015 standout from Cold Spring Harbor, knows the college where he will be headed.
The attackman/midfielder has verballed to Fairfield University, a commitment first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s “Lacrosse Insider” section.
Burke, who is also a hockey standout for the Seahawks, is a righty but strong with either hand. He is an effective feeder, finisher and dodger.
Burke will be the sixth member of his family and extended family to play at the Division I level. Sister Courtney (CSH 2013 middie) will be playing at Bucknell this coming year; cousin Tim Burke (2013 Chaminade LSM) will be playing at Dartmouth; cousin Kieran Burke is coming off a standout season as a sophomore goalie at UNC) and Kieran’s two older brothers (Brian and Sean) played at UNC.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Colin on his commitment.
What were the factors in your decision?
Fairfield offers an excellent academic environment as well as an opportunity to be part of a lacrosse program that is committed to competing at the highest level. Head Coach Andy Copelan made me feel that this was a great fit for me.
What other schools were you considering?
During the recruiting process, I considered Penn State, Colgate, Stony Brook, Hofstra and Mount St. Mary’s.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe that my ability to play and finish with both hands, my ability to find the open man and dodge from behind or up top are my assets as a player.
What areas of your game do you need to work on?
I want to continue to improve my strength, speed and agility.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I started playing in the Cold Spring Harbor Lacrosse Clinic when I was 6 because my older sisters and many cousins were playing the game.
What travel team do you play on and what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Long Island Express. I have participated in the Maverik Showtime all-star game, the Under Armour Uncommitted game and the Long Island Showcase.
Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank all of my Cold Spring Harbor coaches, particularly Head Coach Dennis Bonn, as well as Coach Mike Schwalje and Coach Bob Pomponio from the Long Island Express. I would also like to thank my parents and sisters for supporting me.
Holy Moly! Six in one family albeit extended. That is pretty incredible.
