When Nicky Bonitatibus held the Charlie Murphy Cup (above) after Yorktown’s 14-2 win over Lakeland/Panas on May 4, it was a ritual not only familiar for the Husker program but the Bonitatibus family.

Three older brothers — midfielder Rocky, goaltender Michael and defenseman/longstick midfielder Joey — all played for Yorktown.

Today, Nicky became the latest Bonitatibus to take his game to the college level, verbally committing to Division III power Cortland State, as first reported at Twitter.com/Joe_Lombardi.

Bonitatibus’ commitment came during a busy day of verbals in the tristate, with six players deciding on their college destinations. You can get rundowns of each commitment on “Lacrosse Insider,” our expanded coverage section.

Bonitatibus is a quick and speedy feeder who is especially dangerous from X. He registered nine goals and 32 assists this past season.

The 5-foot-7, 165-pound Bonitatibus is also a football standout for the Huskers.

He is Yorktown’s sixth Class of 2014 commit, joining Kris Alvarado (LIU Post, midfield); Austin Fusco (Syracuse, defense/longstick midfield); Matt Gonzalez (Plattsburgh State, defensive midfield); Luke Palmadesso (Villanova, midfield); and Connor Vercruysse (Rutgers, attack).

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Nicky on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
To get a good education and to find a school that is fit for me. I also wanted to play lacrosse for a team that competes with the best each year.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Washington College (Md.), Salisbury, Tampa, Tufts and some others. But when I visited Cortland, I knew it was where I wanted to go.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My speed and quickness and finding the open man. I like to control the ball behind the net and create plays and opportunities for the team.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I definitely have to work on my shot, but also being a small player, I also have to work hard in the weight room and get bigger.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse at a very young age. Having all my brothers play the sport makes it almost mandatory to play it. I also played ice hockey my whole life starting when I could barley walk, but I stopped playing so I could play football.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Yorktown Ballers during the summer. Some good showcase events I went to were Maverick Showtime, Blue Chip and Peak 200.

Any final thoughts?
I’d like to thank all my friends and family for all there support, and also my lacrosse coaches: (Sean) Carney, (Dave) Marr, (Adam) Lodewick, (Rob) Doerr and (Dave) Graham.
