The University at Albany is on a roll.
The Great Danes beat John Hopkins for just the second time in program history (in 12 tries), winning 10-9 at Homewood Field on Friday.
There’s also some good news for head coach Scott Marr’s program on the recruiting front.
Albany has received a verbal commitment from junior defenseman Joe Eddinger of Canandaigua (NY), a player Joe Lombardi referred to as a “groundball machine,” at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi.
Eddinger, who is also a hockey standout, is a technically sound position defense with an unselfish, team-first approach.
“My style of defense is a help a brother out,” Eddinger said. “I’m always helping out my team inside and talking.”
Now, here’s a Q&A with Joe on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The family atmosphere. The team was great. They made me feel comfortable. The coaches were unbelievably welcoming. They told me how it was going to be and they didn’t sugarcoat it. Also it’s a school and team that I feel beat fits me and where I can strive.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Marrywood and Rutgers. We visited to West Point as a varsity team and I visited Albany.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Ground balls. If there’s a ground ball, I can usually maneuver my way to get it. I love getting the groundballs. I love to get the groundballs and push it in transition.
Also, I feel like I am a good defender in general. My high school coaches have taught me to play good solid defense. I feel my defense is solid.
My style of defense is a help a brother out. I’m always helping out my team inside and talking.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse in fifth grade after I moved to Canandaigua from Honeoye (16 miles west of Canandaigua). All my friends played it, so Icwanted to also. I also play hockey. I’ve been playing hockey ever since I can remember.
What travel team did you play on last summer and what showcase events did you participate in?
Last summer, I played for SweetLax for coach (Kevin) Martin. I also went to some tournaments with my varsity team. And I also went the the 205 summer camps. Also the Philly Showcase.
