Christian Scarpello was very familiar with Rutgers University’s men’s lacrosse program well before the Scarlet Knights began recruiting him.
That’s because Christian’s brother, Colin Scarpello, a senior attackman/midfielder at Madison High School (N.J.), signed a National Letter of Intent with RU in November — more than four months before Christian verbally committed to Rutgers. The latest Scarpello, an attackman, bound for New Brunswick said he also considered Fairfield, Cornell, Hartford and Boston University.
“When my brother committed last summer, I was also being lightly recruited by Rutgers,” Christian said. “My interests were still mainly Fairfield and Delaware.
“Once (Rutgers Head) Coach (Brian) Brecht began recruiting me harder and showing more interest, he really sold the program to me.
“My brother is my best friend. We are always together and have been brought up around lacrosse since Day 1, with my dad (Pat Scarpello) being a coach at Fairleigh Dickinson.
“Colin and I have played on the same teams in the summer, and in the spring for Madison, our whole life so spending four more years with him at the highest level of NCAA lacrosse is an opportunity we both have wanted out whole lives.”
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Christian Scarpello is coming off a sophomore season in which he racked up 28 goals, 18 assists and 42 groundballs.
