Tim Covel is part of a proud few.
The three-sport athlete.
So for the senior defenseman/long-stick midfielder at Cheshire High School (Conn.), preparing for the start of the lacrosse season is a bit of a different process.
That doesn’t mean that Covel, who will attend Connecticut Connecticut, doesn’t have a stick in his hand during the winter, as you’ll find out.
Now, here are Tim’s perspectives on the upcoming season.
What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I play football and basketball, so I have been playing those and staying in shape. We also have a winter league we play in on Sundays and a bunch of us get together and throw around a couple times a week.
How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
I’m really looking forward to this season. We continue our rivalry with defending Class L state champions Fairfield Prep. I am also looking forward to games against Daniel Hand, Simsbury, Lincoln-Sudsbury (Mass.) and East Islip (N.Y.).
As for our scrimmages, we play in the Daniel Hand jamboree against teams like Summit (N.J), West Genessee (N.Y.) and other top teams from tristate area. We also have scrimmaged Darien and Wilton in the past couple years.
What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
There a a few players that I think will surprise some people this year. Our goalie, junior Jared Lawson, is phenomenal, junior midfielder Matt Samuelson, senior midfielder John Klemenz, senior attackman Chris Trasacco and sophomore midfielder Matt Blois will surprise some people and dominate some games this year.
This isn’t really a surprise, but our other captain, senior attackman Tom Dupont (Wesleyan), will have another great year.
What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Position wise, I feel our strength will be at the offensive midfield. We return a ton of great athletes there for this season. Scoring in transition will also be a strength for us with our overall team speed and the fact that I love to push the ball from the defensive end.
Also, Jared Lawson will be a strength in goal for us.
How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
The SCC (Southern Connecticut Conference) favorite for this season would have to be Fairfield Prep. They are the defending state champions and return most of their starters. It should be between them, us and Daniel Hand this season. We are really looking forward to trying to knock off Prep.
