Matt Borges is part of the next generation.
Borges is a defenseman/long-stick midfielder for defending New York State Class B champion Garden City.
Twelve seniors on that team are currently playing on college team. Seven current GC seniors and two juniors have committed to play at the next level.
There are more on the way.
Borges, who verbally committed to Ohio State, is the Trojans’ second sophomore commit, joining Penn State-bound Tom Wright, also a defender/LSM.
The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Borges is a lefty with strong stick skills and a knack for getting groundballs.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The Ohio State University is an outstanding school, Also I loved (Ohio State Head) Coach (Nick) Myers and the rest of his staff.
They really put an important emphasis on not only being an athlete, but being a great student and a great person.
I immediately fell in love with the campus and I felt I had a great opportunity to do big things in the classroom and on the lacrosse field.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited a bunch of schools throughout this process however the few I was really considering after my visits where University of North Carolina, UMass and obviously Ohio State.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I’d say my biggest asset as a player is being able to pick up groundballs then immediately getting my head up to make the right play. I would also say that I am a fast-pace player and I like when the ball is on the ground.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced to lacrosse because my uncle is a Hall-of-Fame player (Don Borges, who played at Lynbrook High School and C.W. Post University), my cousin played in high school at the time, and I loved hockey which was a similar sport.
Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
Some big influences on my development as a player definitely have to go to my dad, my travel coach Mike Winkoff and Pat McCabe, who was a phenomenal lacrosse player at Syracuse.
What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
I play for For the Love of the Game this prior summer I did not go to to many showcases because I was hurt but I still made it to Blue Chip 225, First Look, and some team events.
