Nicky Galasso has played his last game for the University of North Carolina.
The attackman who led West Islip to four New York state championships en route to becoming the all-time leading scorer in Long Island history has been granted a release by UNC coach Joe Breschi.
After being named ACC rookie of the year in 2011, Galasso was a third-team All-America this past season. He will have two years of eligibility, beginning with the 2013 season.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing to have a young man like Nicky leave our program,” Breschi said in a statement issued by the university today. “We appreciate all that he has brought to Carolina lacrosse over the past two years and we wish him the best of luck both academically and athletically at his new school. Nicky leaves here in great academic standing and we’re proud of the way he achieved in the classroom at UNC.”
Galasso ended his WI career with a 13-5 win over Fairport in the 2010 state title game at Stony Brook University. In that game, Galasso broke former Elmont star Jim Zaffuto’s record for most career points by a Long Island player of 498.
Although Galasso has not indicated any colleges he is considering, speculation has centered on programs within a relatively close proximity of the New York metro area.
