Based on the early returns, Smithtown West’s recruiting class of rising juniors is among the tops in the tristate.
It includes attackman Ryan Keenan (Penn State), goalie Matthew Smidt (Ohio State), midfielder Christian Zawadzki (Maryland), and now. …
Drum roll, please.
As we told you first thing this morning on Twitter.com/joe_lombardi, Kyle Mathie became the latest member of the Bulls’ Class of 2014 to make a commitment.
Mathie, a defenseman/longstick midfielder, has verballed to North Carolina.
“The main factors in my decision was the coaching staff, educational opportunities and support services,” said Mathie, who also considered Penn State, Lehigh and Cornel, and also visited UMass and Delaware.
Mathie, a lefty, has good size (at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds), athleticism and stick skills.
“My strengths are my speed and footwork as well as being an offensive threat,” he said.
Mathie was moved from midfield to defense this past February, prior to the start of his sophomore season running with the Bulls.
“My coaches at Smithtown West – Moltisanti, Latoushe, Rotella and Snyder – have really worked with me to get me where I am now,” Mathie said.

Congrats to Mathie and all the other talented kids from STW and other rising SOPHS, Jrs and seniors that are going to UNC.
If Breschi can’t figure this out on his own then the AD should tell him that while it’s OK to collect his usual annual quota of AA’s and other great freshmen recruits, to be fair to these and other kids that came in as Freshmen and have stuck with the program from the start, HE CAN ONLY accept sophomore transfers on the team–no rising Jrs, Seniors or “Grad” students doing their 4th yr–they had their shot to join as freshmen. Enough is enough!
It’s tough enough for 4 yr recruits at UNC to get playing time let alone coming back to school and facing additional AA transfers and graduate students.
I’ll defy anyone who doesn’t think this is at least a morale breaker in many cases!!
Of course this applies to Duke, UVA and other elite teams that follow this practice.
Saw this kid a lot. Very skilled. Has a great future.
