Denver swept Ohio State last season en route to an appearance in the Final Four.
The Pioneers entered today’s matchup against unranked Ohio State at No. 5 in the latest rankings.
But expecting the unexpected has quickly become the new reality in major Division I lacrosse, and Ohio State came away with a 10-9 win in the first game of a doubleheader in Jacksonville, Fla.
Logan Schuss had five goals for the Buckeyes, with former Baldwin (N.Y.) High School star Dominique Alexander excelling in the roll of playmaker as Ohio State effectively ran a ball-control offense in a game broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.
Navy and host Jacksonville are meeting in the second game of the doubleheader, which is also being broadcast on the NBC Sports Network.
In action yesterday, Notre Dame upset No. 2 Duke and Virginia barely avoided another shocker, edging Drexel 9-8.

Hey good win for OSU. Kept Denver out of its offensive rhythm. But got to bring in a shot clock. OSU did the right thing strategy wise and bled off the clock particularly at the end to keep the ball out of DU’s hands but just don’t like to see it.
In another surprise, Jacksonville, in just its third year as a D-I programs, beats Navy 13-7 in the second game of the doubleheader in Jacksonville.
Surprised NY Mike hasn’t weighed in on this one?
