The Woodstick Classic is the nation’s longest uninterrupted high school boys lax annual affair.
Last year’sevent, the 120th edition of a rivalry that started in 1935, had special significance since both Garden City and Manhasset were aligned in the same class, meaning it was a likely preview of the Nassau County Class B title game.
That’s precisely what proved to be the case as Garden City won the Woodstick Classic 10-6 before beating Manhasset 6-5 for the Section 8 championship – its sixth straight Nassau County crown.
Manhasset entered last season having won two straight state titles in Class C.
The scenario for this year – entering the season – is identical. How it plays out, of course, remains to be seen.
For now, we can tell you this.
The 121st edition of the Woodstick Classic will be played on Saturday, May 5 at Garden City. It will be GC’s second-to-last game of the regular season.
That’s among the highlights of the two-time state finalist Trojans’ schedule, which GC coach Steve Finnell sent along to me last week.

I believe that Exeter and Andover have also played every year since 1935. The record in their rivalry stands at 38-38-1.
Is the 1st Saturday in May rivalry day?
Lakeland Town game is that day every year as well.
St Anthonys Chaminade?
anymore big rivalry games that day?
Don’t know about actual rivalries but it is a pretty good day for some interesting matchups:
Suffern @ Mahopac
Niskayuna @ Duxbury
New Canaan @ JJ
Somers @ Bronxville
Shoreham W-R @ Mt Lakes
St Anthonys @ Darien
Good to see Bville scheduling some top Section 1 teams this season. Would have luved to have seen them play this sched last season with their 2 senior D1 studs (Notre Dame, Gtown).
still have one more (Hopkins) with a few future ones out there with him, should still be one of the top teams.
Throwing out the first pick. . . GC 8, Set 5
I believe a great game flying under the radar for GC in 2012 will be against Jericho. At the conference seeding meetings for Nassau, I was surprised at the firepower returning for Jericho. Although GC will most likely win this game, Jericho will definitely give them a good game.
As always, also, looking forward to the woodstick!
Garden City could put their JV out there and destroy Jericho.
GC 8, Set 5
GC 9, Set 6
I say GC 11-7, the D doesnt have that same firepower but the GC offense is very dangerous this year. The woodstick will definitely be the #1 game to watch possibly in the whole country though.
I also do agree with the comment Nassau Coach stated earlier, the Jericho game should be a sleeper.
