The days between Christmas and New Year’s Day are usually slower paced than most others during the year.
Not when it comes to lax recruiting commitments.
If you were with us today on Twitter, you learned of commitments for defensemen on two of the most successful teams from this past season.
Fordham Prep’s Logan Williamson, a junior, decided on Fairfield. Mahopac’s Matt Fetzer, a senior, selected Oneonta State.
We’ll be getting thoughts from both players on their choices, starting with the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Fetzer, who is known for his speed, work ethic and high lacrosse IQ.
In the photo at left, Fetzer (No. 6) is shown celebrating the Indians’ 7-5 win over defending champion Lakeland/Panas in the 2011 Section 1 Class A title game at the Suffern Middle School Complex.
Here’s a Q&A with Matt on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision?
My decision was really based on academics and the idea of me feeling comfortable at the school. Oneonta fit me perfectly in both aspects.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered a lot of different schools over the summer before choosing Oneonta. Among the schools I visited were Salisbury, Stevenson, Cortland, Mercy, NYIT and Pace.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Definitely my lacrosse IQ. Knowing a lot about the game is the key to winning. I’d describe myself as a player with a lot of speed, but definetly room for improvement in my strength and stick work.
When did you start playing lacrosse and what other sports did you play?
I’ve played lacrosse since the third grade. It was really the only sport that I was interested in at the time. In high school, I played football my freshman year, basketball my sophmore year and ran cross country for three years.
What do you think were the keys to last year’s success and what are your goals for this coming season?
The key to our season last year was having a set goal to work towards from the beginning of the season. Our coaches told us that we were set out to win the section championship from day one.
This year, I think it’s key to do the same exact thing, if we keep working hard in the offseason it will make it a lot easier to work towards that goal of winning the section championship again.
