Jim Nagle is about to embark on his first season as head coach at Stony Brook.
The former head coach at Colgate replaces Rick Sowell, who left Stony Brook for Navy.
One of Nagle’s top priorities since taking over the Seawolves has been to target talent from the Empire State.
Case in point, Patrick Wood.
The senior midfielder from Guilderland is a strong shooter with good stick skills and a high lacrosse IQ — attributes on display in his highlight video, which you can check out here.
Here’s a Q&A with Patrick on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision?
First, I wanted to play at a school with a long standing lacrosse tradition. Stony Brook has been a top tier Division I school competing in the American East Conference and the NCAA tournament.
Second, I chose Stony Brook because of the excellent educational programs it has to offer.
Lastly, I am impressed with Coach (Jim) Nagle and his coaching staff. Coach Nagle demonstrated several years of success at Colgate and I think he will carry that success on to the future of Stony Brook lacrosse.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Vermont, Binghamton, Detroit Mercy, Bryant and Union. I was considering Detroit Mercy, Union and Stony Brook.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My stick skills, shooting ability and high IQ for the game of lacrosse.
What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
On the field, I would like to improve defensively. Off the field, I would like to continue to get stronger and faster.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I started receiving letters and emails at the beginning of my junior year.
What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do?
I competed at the Top 205 Rising Junior and Senior camps. I also attended Under Armour Upstate twice and the Syracuse Summer Shootout twice. All of these camps and showcases helped me gain exposure to college lacrosse coaches.
