With the arrival of Labor Day, the pace of college commitments should pick up even further.
On Sept. 1, NCAA coaches were able to directly contact juniors, many of whom are or will be making unofficial visits the new few weeks and months.
What college has been doing the best so far in landing commitments from top tristate juniors? That’s our latest poll question. To vote, go to the right panel of this page. Then, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.
If you checked our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown” yesterday, you learned of a commitment of a junior from one of the region’s top high school programs.
Righty attackman Dylan Molloy of St. Anthony’s gave a verbal commitment to Brown University and head coach Lars Tiffany.
Molloy is a strong shooter with a great feel for the game and outstanding stick skills. He also considered Georgetown, Notre Dame, Loyola and Tufts, where his brother, former Ward Melville standout Ryan Molloy was an attackman through the end of this past season, his senior year with the Jumbos.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Dylan Molloy transferred to St. Anthony’s from Ward Melville prior to last season.
Here’s a Q&A with Dylan on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Brown?
I wanted to attend a top academic university that also had a competitive lacrosse schedule. Brown was a perfect match for me.
(Head) Coach (Lars) Tiffany was very influential in my decision because of how passionate he is about lacrosse and the academics at Brown. He took a lot of time to answer all of my questions and personally showed me all around the campus. I feel very comfortable with Coach Tiffany and I think that he is more than just a lacrosse coach to the players on his team. (Assistant) Coach (Kip) Turner was also really eager to get to know me and he was very easy to talk to.
I took a separate tour of the campus through admissions and I felt that I could see myself as a student attending Brown. The campus is amazing and all the students at Brown seem to be really happy there. There was nothing not to love about Brown. They are also in the middle of building an unbelievable sports complex that is going to be great for Brown lacrosse.
I feel that I am really fortunate to be able to attend such a highly ranked Ivy league university and be able to play for their lacrosse team too.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered and visited Georgetown, Notre Dame, Tufts and Loyola. I also considered and was planning on visiting Yale, Lehigh, and Bucknell this month.
What adjustments do you think you’ll need to make to play at the next level?
I think that the speed of the game at the college level is something that I will have to adjust to. I also need to keep lifting and running to stay in shape to play with and against the best athletes in Division I lacrosse.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I have a high lacrosse IQ, great field vision and a good shot. My style of play is to be a good team player. I try to create and make things happen whenever I have the ball. It is just as important to me to have assists as it is to have goals.
What players have helped influence you as you made your way through varsity?
My brother, Ryan Molloy, whose hard work and dedication helped bring Tufts to a national championship.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I transferred to St. Anthony’s High School as a sophomore and played for Coach (Mike) Chanenchuk and Coach (Mike) Schwalje. They made me feel very confident and helped me to develop my game and expand my role on the field. St Anthony’s lacrosse program does a great job in preparing lacrosse players to play at the college level.
