John Jay senior Alex Lanza drew up a nice blueprint for a perfect college.
He wanted to continue his lacrosse career at a place that a place that equally balanced academics with athletics.
The 6-foot, 200-pound lefty defenseman completed his mission by giving a verbal commitment to Division III power Gettysburg, where he will join the Bullets in 2011, along with current John Jay teammates Jimmy and Brendan Morris.
Here’s a Q&A with Alex on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Gettysburg?
I really wanted a school with great academics and lacrosse, and Gettysburg was the perfect fit. I had visited the campus a few times before my junior year and I knew I loved the facilities and environment around the school and the lacrosse program. Coach (Hank) Janczyk really made me feel good about Gettysburg and after talking with him in late July, I knew I wanted to go there.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Notre Dame, Fairfield, Lafayette, Villanova, Wesleyan, Stony Brook, Ohio State, Siena and Binghamton. I visited ND, Fairfield, Lafayette, Wesleyan and Binghamton.
What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I think adjusting to the speed of the game at the next level will be a challenge. I also think I need to gain some strength to fight off some of the bigger attackmen at the next level, along with keeping the stick skills sharp.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my ability to stay with quick attackmen and getting ground balls off the ground and up the field. My style of play is hard working with good communication. I’m not overly aggressive but I’ll throw some checks when I know I can to stay in position.
What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
I’ve always looked up to players like Ryder Bohlander and Jameson Pickel. I try to model my game around the way Ryder handled attackmen behind the net and the way Jameson attacked ground balls.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
When I started really playing well over the summer at tournaments and camps, and contributing a lot in the spring as a sophomore and junior.
