Ty Schuldt became the first Yorktown Husker in the Class of 2011 to commit to a college last week when he gave a verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer from the University of Hartford.
Today, we conducted a Q&A with Ty on his college choice.
We expect another D-I commitment to come from a Yorktown player shortly, so stay tuned for that.
But first, here’s the Q&A with Ty, a standout attackman/midfielder who will also once again be a key member of the Yorktown football team, along with fellow laxer Justin Mabus, who is also a Division I recruit.
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Hartford?
Hartford had everything that I was looking for — a great business school with an insurance major, the right size and distance from home and a lacrosse program that plays in a great conference. They are an up-and-coming young team with great potential, and as long as I work hard, I feel I can be an impact player right away. I had been talking with (Head) Coach (Peter) Lawrence and (Assistant) Coach (Jon) Basti for a while and they are really great guys. Then at Top 205, Coach Basti was my coach and I really liked his style of coaching.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Loyola, Towson, Fairfield and St. Johns and spoke to a lot of other coaches. I had it narrowed down to St. Johns and Hartford for a while.
What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I think it will be important for me to continue to work hard off the field. I know that my senior year in high school, with football, lifting and lacrosse, will all contribute to my readiness for the next level as well.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strength is that I am a good two-way middie and I am also a very versatile player. I think that my speed is very important too because it helps me create offense and dodge effectively.
What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
That is a really tough question coming out of Yorktown. I looked up to so many players starting from my cousin, Joe Roberta (Class of ’98), and my brother Gary (’04), who were out there playing with me and teaching me stuff, since I was 3, to all the great players that came out of Yorktown. I really look up to all the guys that graduated in ’09 and appreciate how they taught me the ropes and treated me like their little brother.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the D-I level?
When I made varsity as a sophomore and we started practicing and I was out there with (John) Ranagan on the same middie line, that was amazing. Then the games started and I saw that I could actually play on a team that was ranked in the Top 10 in the nation. As we moved on through the playoffs and the competition got tougher and I was able to contribute, thats when I thought that I could play at the D-I level.

Congrats DOT. make ytown proud and do work senior year. Get that Murphy Cup and Section 1 title back to where it belongs!
Congratulations, Ty ! Enjoy your summer, as football and lacrosse are just around the corner. Have a great senior year, both on the field and in the classroom. I wish you continued success as you move to Hartford !
As Joe just reported on the recruiting update thread, Justin Mabus has committed to Towson. Good luck to both Ty and Justin!
Congrats Ty and best of luck next year at Town and in your college career at Hartford!
With the Town kids at Wesleyan, Derek Koelsch going to Trinity and now Ty going to Hartford, there are going to be quite a few Huskers playing within a few mile radius in Connecticut.
I see Ty stepping in and making an immediate impact at Hartford.
No question in my mind that Ty will be an impact player at Hartford.
Good job Ty!
Good for you Ty!
Schuldt and Mabus are not only great lax players but great athletes – another example of what D-I coaches are looking for in their recruits.
Ty – We are all very proud of you and Justin..
Congrats Ty!
With its location near HV and LI and in CT, no reason Hartford can’t become a contending program.
Hartford can definitely build its program to a contender. No doubt.
Nice article on Schuldt/Mabus commitments in the NCN…

Great article.
Good luck in football Ty!
Good luck vs New Ro on Saturday Ty!
Maybe not this year, but in a year or two, Towson may be a team to reckon with, in addition to the Y’town kids, their coach is raving about their fabolous freshmen four, including Andrew Hodgson, the do-everything middie modestly over shadowed by some kid named Gallaso…
In 2011, will Townson be the best team on (or near) North Charles Street?
