A new era in John Jay lacrosse history officially begins today.
Tim Schurr makes his head-coaching debut as John Jay hosts Brewster in a 4:30 p.m. game on John Jay’s turf main contest field.
Schurr is just the third head coach in the 31-year history of the Indians’ tradition-rich program.
Bob Kear, who founded the program, guided the Indians from 1979-1999. He was succeeded by Nick Savastano (2000-09).
They will be another head-coaching debut in Nanuet as John Esposito coaches his first game for the Golden Knights, who host Wappingers at 1 p.m.
Rye, which saw its run of four straight Class C sectional titles end last season, has one of its biggest non-postseason tests as it faces Dulaney High School of Maryland in a 1 p.m. game at Johns Hopkins University.
Also in Section 1, Mamaroneck, which has been at the receiving end of a lot of positive preseason buzz, plays at Hen Hud at 11 a.m. and Clarkstown South visits Horace Greeley at 4:30 p.m.
Mercer Island, fresh of a big win over Mahopac, continues its East Coast tour with a 7 p.m. game vs. Lakeland/Panas at Lakeland High School. (Mercer Island wraps up its swing on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game at Guilderland.)
Things should be much quieter today in Long Island after yesterday’s big news as Sachem North stunned the top-ranked team in the nation, West Islip, 13-12 in overtime.
An 11 a.m. game between South Side and host Wantagh highlights the slate. In other action, Massapequa plays at Long Beach at 1 p.m. and Floral Park visits Baldwin at 4 p.m.
In the CHSAA, Iona Prep opens the season with a 1 p.m. game at St. John the Baptist. St. Anthony’s meets Kellenberg and Holy Trinity faces Fordham Prep in a pair of 4:30 p.m. games.
As always, be sure to post your thoughts on these matchups as well as any info on the scores and game details.

St. Anthony’s 17 Kellenberg 3 final. They were up 15-1 in the third when they sat the starters cleared the bench and ran began to run the clock. It actually could have been much worse.
Wantagh 20, South Side 13 final
laxmaven… loved to hear some stats if u have em
Looks like a long day for Somers on Saturday. The Friars are in Mid-Season form!. Kellenberg is only a notch below Somers.
kellenburg is a FEW notchs below somers…any word on the IP-SJB game?
sorry baller no stats. i had no real rooting interest just wanted to see how good St. Anthony’s was. i dont think this was much of a test for them. the friars were up 1-0 after about 7 seconds and poured it on fast after that.
10589- somers is much better than kellenberg.
Rye beats Dulaney (MD) 7-4.
Nice win for Rye and Section I!
Nanuet just blew out Wappingers….
Iona with a great 11-10 win over SJB.
Nanuet won 14-6. Congrats Coach Esposito!
just came back from J and Brewster…thought Brewster would put up more of a fight…Daniello and Pickel as advertised, also thought #15 a very fine player (O’Donell?)..beautiful ball movement and transition play…however J fans, I do think you will do need to do a better job on the FO’s against the better teams, I think Brewster actually dominated here…perhaps I am being picky, I actually thought J could have put up 3 touchdowns…
Final score? Stats? Who was taking draws for Brewster?
BigBadBear –
Brewster dominated faceoff’s?? I left after 3 and Jay was clearly winning more…are you talking about the 3rd and 4th when Jay was running their 3rd and 4th mid fields???
Congrats Rye! Delaney is supposed to be down abit this year, but still, to travel to Hopkins and win in their backyard is excellent.
Congrats Nanuet on opening day win.
Congrats JJ and Coach Shurr.
What’s up with Wappingers? 0-3 and sinking fast, b ut their sched gets a lot easier next week with O’Neill, Croton and Ossining, JFK, NSalem and Peekskill.
What did HenHud do at mamaroneck today? They have a brutal schedule through the middle of april…cya.
LacrosseInsider/BigBadBear
Insider…take it easy, take it easy.
Here’s a controversial notion. If you really want to keep track of useless stats in a blowout game, like face offs, bring a piece of paper and a pencil to the game and mark them down.
Insider, try to not be so offended. But if you say that they clearly won more face offs then it must be true.
Here’s another controversial item… 3rd and 4th line players count too.
…paper…pencil…final score.
LOL!
Please –
Well said!
Nice win for Rye. Heard they played well.
please/insider…perhaps I ought to revise…given that Jay was controlling every part of the game..they were controlling faces less well…ok?
Nice win for Iona, definitely indicates that they will be able to compete with everybody but the big 2 in the CHSAA.
Any word on how Fordham fared at Holy Trinity?
Steve Trizano 5-0 for IP. Ben Borsellino 3-2.
Hen Hud 8, Mamo 7
Lot of pre-season hype about Mamo. Guess not especially bc Hen Hud is supposedly down. Kyle Fanning 4-2 for HH.
A score here might just revolutionize this thread. Who is daring enough to post the actual score. I know stats would be too bold.
#15 on JJ is Will O’Donnell senior midfielder committed to Army, had a great game.
18-8 John Jay.
daniello 4-2
jimmy morris 3-2
chen 3-0
weil 2-2
walter 2-2
maher/franklin split time in goal…
Mercer Island vs L/P?
Good win for Rye, but more importantly, how cool must it be to play at Homewood in a High School lax game? What an awesome experience.
Greeley 10-1 Danny Leventhal leads the way with 4 goals
JJ vs. Brewster: First of all a beautiful opening day drew a nice crowd in Cross River. Lots of JJ students as well as strong showing from the Yorktown and Somers varsity lacrosse teams and a few area coaches. Still hard to determine what JJ has as Brewster was not at the same level today. Brewster will compete and beat many section one teams due to a strong core of young and talented players. They are about a year, maybe two, away from competing with they top teams in the section. There is mutual respect among Jay and Brewster players as many have spent time together on summer teams (WestRock, Prime Time, Renegades)
JJ looked good in transition and had a number of quality shots. With 18 goals scored many of those shots found the back of the net. Scoring was spread around Daniello 4, Morris 3, Chen 3, Weil 2, Walter 2, other Morris 1, Lupinacci 1, ODonnell 1, Pickel 1. Not official but close.
JJ running 5 close defense, 6 middies, 4 attack, 2 LSM (although Pickel takes most of the reps), and 2 Goalies (50/50). This may tighten up as the year progresses but they are deep. Two freshman (Beck and Lambert) are in that rotation. Face off X needs some work (Brewster won the majority today). 4 different JJ players were involved throughout the day. Walter was most effective. Over the course of the year someone will emerge as the go-to guy. Still early.
Mercer Island wins 8-6 over Lakeland/Panas. Mercer looked sluggish to start but turned it on in the second half (prob jet lag and back to back games). #12 on Mercer (a middie)is a stud. Pretty impressive to come out to the East Coast and beat two good sect 1 teams in Mahopac and LLP. Mercer is the real deal.
Nice win for HH.
Kyle Fanning…great guy and player…a Westrock guy.
Mamaroneck…I don’t know what all the hype is about for them. They have a lot of proving to do before I’m sold on them. They also have a bunch of creampuff games on their schedule.
Greeley continues momentum after strong scrimmage showing vs Town by easily beating Clarkstown South 10-2.
Dan Leventhal 4-1
Nate Becker 3-3
Gabe Weissmann 11 saves
where’s just sayin?
OMG … if Pac and LP loose to Mercy Island this badly imagine what would happen if they tried to play like Darien/Ridgefield/LI powerhouses. Bottom line … in Section One its the Big Three of Town, Somers, JJ and some contenders like PV, Rye and even LP and then wannabes like Pac who are jealous of the top programs and resentful of the deserved attention they get.
The hype around Mamaroneck is deserved. They played awful today, especially in the second half, and they only lost by 1. Trust me, they will get it together for their upcoming games, and the rest of the season.
Just sayin
Its a little early to call Pac a wannabe. Its Mercer Island first of all . Lets talk in May. enjoy the season and stay off the caffeine
Pac beat PV last year…
Yeah Rye played well and it was great for the kids to play at Homewood Field. After they watched Hopkins practice and went into the locker room. Think a Hopkins ass’t coach may have gone to Town with Dooley. Scrimmage this AM with a school outside of DC.
Hopkins Coach is Bill Dwan Asst Head Coach, he is a Husker and beforethe Dooleys.
Brunswick and Ridgefield scrimmaged Thursday evening. Very sloppy ball by both sides. Brunswick looked better and I think ended up 4-5 goals up on the Tigers by games end.
Sec1
Thx
Was told rhs-wick score was 8-5 wick by a participating player, but was not there to verify.
Nice!
