I’ve always said that one of the great things about lacrosse is that when two equally talented teams play, the result, more often than not it seems, is a one-goal game — often in overtime.
This weekend, that theory has gone one step further.
Former Huntington star Rhamel Bratton (right) scored four goals as second-ranked Virginia outlasted top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Syracuse 11-10 today in front of 7,501 fans in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers led 10-6 early in the fourth quarter before the Orange rallied in a game that had a large representation of former high school standouts from the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.
It was the third 11-10 result involving marquee programs this weekend.
Yesterday, No. 6 Maryland beat No. 9 Duke and No. 7 Princeton edged No. 5 Hopkins by identical 11-10 scores at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
A pair of former John Jay all-Americans had big outings today. Syracuse senior attackman Chris Daniello had two goals and a career-high three assists for a career-best five points. Virginia sophomore attackman Chris Bocklet scored twice.
Former Ridgefield star Matt White, a freshman attackman, had one goal and one assist for the Cavaliers. Former Manhasset star Connor English, also a freshman at UVa, started at attack. He had three ground balls and took one shot on goal.

Also of note today, former Clarkstown South standout Chris Haggerty and Brien McMahon High School product Peter McNichols each scored three goals as Quinnipiac defeated Detroit-Mercy 13-8 today in Detroit. Ward Melville product Zach Pall had one goal, one assist and 13 ground balls for the Bobcats.

Yeh UVA! #1 IN THE NATION NOW! (when the new poll comes out)
Not sure what this game means now other than UVa is #1 in the rankings leapfrogging over Cuse. They will meet again of course. That’s the game that matters.
This was definitely just Round One. You know these teams are going to be meeting again Memorial Day Weekend!
UVA put Drew out for game with a penalized hit early in first quarter after he took one of his coast to coast clears to the goal.
Cuse scored on the man up but lost Drew for the duration (and maybe longer).
