It should be an interesting season for Mamaroneck.

Realignment has put the Tigers in a league that includes White Plains, Eastchester, New Rochelle, Roosevelt and Scarsdale.

If Mamaroneck is to contend for the top spot, Connecticut College-bound senior goaltender Matt Weiner will have to come up with plenty of big saves.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
In order to prepare for the first day of the season our team has been practicing every Monday and Wednesday in the gym for an hour and a half and we are in the weight room for an hour prior to every practice. These practices are really where we start to see players get better and better. Playing in a gym really helps the players work on their sticks in tight spaces. In addition to those things, I’ve been on the wall almost as much as possible. I also keep a stick in my car so when I have a free period I’m throwing around or at a brick wall and I throw against the rebounder in my backyard for half an hour at least three times a week. I just want to keep getting my stick and hands better and better.

Do you have more of a sense of urgency since you’re a senior?
I don’t want to come off as smug, however, now that I’m a senior I don’t feel a sense of urgency. As a goalie I look at the whole picture and look at every angle. My last year in high school isn’t one where I feel I need to do something special; it’s just another season to get as good as I can possibly be. I want to continue to do what I’ve done in years past which is work hard and try to be a leader day in and day out for my teammates.

How does your scrimmage schedule look and which ones are you looking forward to most?
I don’t know what the team’s scrimmage schedule looks like yet… To be honest, I look forward to all of them. Scrimmages mean that the first game is getting closer and closer, that’s wicked exciting. Scrimmages are great since they provide a window for us to see how e coalesce as a group and figure out what the team’s temperament is going to be like.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
We have some holes to fill after losing some key players to graduation like Alex Bodor and Will Thompson but we have kids in our program that are ready to really take the reins and step up. The fact of the matter is that we’re a team, so it’s hard for me to single kids out while each player contributes all he can. All I’ll say is that we have some kids that are going to surprise quite a few people in the area and our team might just surprise a few as well.
