As an attackman at Yorktown High School, Jake Thorp is part of one of the most established varsity lacrosse programs in the nation.
At the next level, Thorp will get to experience an interesting change. He will be helping the College of Saint Rose in Albany build its program from the very start.
Yorktown’s first two Division I commitments for the Class of 2011 came about just the last few days.
And the two players who made those college choices, Ty Schuldt and Justin Mabus, are very familiar with each other, having played football, lacrosse and basketball together since childhood.
But after one more year with the Huskers, they’ll be going their separate ways.
Ty Schuldt became the first Yorktown Husker in the Class of 2011 to commit to a college last week when he gave a verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer from the University of Hartford.
Those of you who check our “Recruiting review and commitment rundown” each day got the news as it happened. Today, we conducted a Q&A with Ty on his college choice.
Remy Lieberman is set to begin his third year as a starting attackman for Yorktown.
But this year’s Husker team will be minus many of the key players Lieberman played alongside the last two years.
That’s among the topics we discussed with Lieberman, who will attend Division III power Wesleyan, where he will join a pair of former Yorktown teammates: John Froats, the 2009 NESCAC rookie of the year, and incoming freshman Brett Cabriele.
Yorktown is hoping to win a sectional title for what would be the 29th time in the last 31 years this season. It’s certainly one of the more impressive streaks in high school sports. Anywhere.
If they are to do it, the Huskers will have to get consistent play from a new-look defense that is minus two all-Americans (John Fennessy/Towson and Ethan Fox/Marist) and three all-section standouts (Brendan Brunelle/Marist, Brett Cabriele/Wesleyan and Michael Bonitatibus/Loyola).
Perhaps the most experienced returnee on defense for the Huskers is C.W. Post-bound senior Stephen Burke.
Roy Colsey. Dom Fin. Steve Carcaterra. Ousmane Greene. Erik Elfstrum. Joe Spallone.
Those were some of the more recognizable teams on the 1989 Yorktown Huskers, who beat Corning East 8-7 in overtime to win the Class B state championship. The Trojans were led by Casey Donegan, Todd Cavallaro and Dan Burnside.
It was the second state title in Husker history. (Yorktown has since won four more for a total of six.)
Let’s take a look back, shall we, to highlights of that classic played at Syracuse University’s Coyne Field
If you read the preview of this feature posted here yesterday, you shouldn’t be too surprised as to who our first subject is.

Yorktown senior midfielder Joey Porcelli had plenty of reasons to commit to Wesleyan University, in addition to the fact that it’s recently become a pipeline for current and recently graduated Husker players.
The high school lacrosse landscape is about to change in the northern tier of Section 1.
Add Don Connolly’s name to the ever-growing list of past Yorktown players taking the reins of a program in dire need of a fresh face and some new ideas.
Arlington is a massive school, one of the biggest in all of New York state. For years, it has been best known for its boys soccer prowess. But now, with Connolly taking over a lacrosse program that has taken baby steps in recent years, there’s a buzz that is both undeniable and unavoidable.
The annual Darien vs. Manhasset and Chaminade vs. Yorktown showdowns will have special meaning this coming season.
They will be played at West Point as part of Jim Regan Day at West Point on Saturday, April 24. Army will be hosting Holy Cross at noon.
More on that in a moment.
For the last few years, the John Jay-Yorktown game, regarded as the regular season game of the year in Section 1, has been a May tradition.
And it’s been played on a Friday night the last two years.
This year, the game will be played in the opening week of the regular season — and on a Saturday afternoon.
On the right panel of this page, you can find the poll question asking you to pill the top rivalry in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.
Among the leading vote-getters is the annual Lakeland/Panas vs. Yorktown Charlie Murphy Cup game.
One of the most memorable games in the history of that rivalry came in 1991 when Yorktown pulled out a dramatic 9-8 overtime win.

Stephen Burke spent most of last season sidelined with an injury.
So the Yorktown senior had to make up for lost time over the summer in order to land a spot with a collegiate program.
Burke managed to do just that. He has given a verbal commitment to join Division II national champion C.W. Post.

Remy Lieberman, a two-year starting attackman for Yorktown, has made his college choice.
The rising senior will attend Division III power Wesleyan, where he will join former teammates John Froats, the 2009 NESCAC rookie of the year, and incoming freshman Brett Cabriele.
Yorktown rising senior goaltender Derek Koelsch,
who performed well in several summer showcase events,
has committed to Trinity in Hartford, Conn.
The recruiting commitments continue to come in on a daily basis, folks.
Just moments ago, one of the top rising senior goaltenders in the region, Yorktown’s Derek Koelsch, committed to attend Trinity College, an elite Division III program both academically and athletically.
Be sure to read Derek’s thoughts on the jump.
It was a long process last year, but the Yorktown ‘Huskers are ready to do it again.
Yorktown coach Dave Marr told me tonight that Yorktown is planning to petition to compete in Class A for the 2010 season.
• Report on Monday night’s Section 1 exceptional senior all-star game
West Islip’s Nicky Galasso, shown in action at left last night
against Hicksville, scored five goals to match his jersey number.
Yorktown and West Islip both suffered crushing losses to Syosset in last year’s playoffs. Now, they’re each within a game of playing for a state title.
Connor English of Manhasset has enjoyed one of the most storied careers of any high school player this decade. Can he end it with a state title?
And how about Class B, where two teams — Niskayuna and Sayville — who were relative unknowns at the outset of this decade are now on the brink of a state championship.
All three matchups will be 1 vs. 2.
No, we’re not talking about seeds. We’re talking about sections.
Three teams from Section 1 (Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties) will square off against their counterparts from Section 2 (Albany area) tomorrow starting at 3:30 p.m. at the University at Albany in the state quarterfinals.
We’ve previewed tomorrow’s Long Island championships as well as the CIAC quarterfinals, now let’s take a look at what to expect up along I-87.
We continue our video interviews following Thursday’s Section 1 championships at White Plains High School.
Now playing is senior goaltender Michael Bonitatibus Yorktown, who reflects on Yorktown’s 11-10 win over Lakeland/Panas which gave the ‘Huskers their 28th sectional title in the last 30 years.
Bonitatibus became the first freshman to start in goal for Yorktown since John Martino in 1967 back in 2006.
We continue now with our video interviews following Thursday’s Section 1 championships at White Plains High School.
Next up is senior attackman Tom Casey of Yorktown, who scored four goals in Yorktown’s 11-10 win over Lakeland/Panas. Casey is bound for 2009 Division III national champion Cortland State.
We are now starting off our video interviews following Thursday’s Section 1 championships at White Plains High School, gang.
First up is Johns Hopkins-bound senior midfielder John Ranagan of Yorktown, who scored the winning goal in overtime in Yorktown’s 11-10 win over Lakeland/Panas, giving the ‘Huskers their 28th sectional title in the last 30 years.
