Remy Lieberman is set to begin his third year as a starting attackman for Yorktown.

But this year’s Husker team will be minus many of the key players Lieberman played alongside the last two years.

That’s among the topics we discussed with Lieberman, who will attend Division III power Wesleyan, where he will join a pair of former Yorktown teammates: John Froats, the 2009 NESCAC rookie of the year, and incoming freshman Brett Cabriele.

Yorktown is hoping to win a sectional title for what would be the 29th time in the last 31 years this season. It’s certainly one of the more impressive streaks in high school sports. Anywhere.

If they are to do it, the Huskers will have to get consistent play from a new-look defense that is minus two all-Americans (John Fennessy/Towson and Ethan Fox/Marist) and three all-section standouts (Brendan Brunelle/Marist, Brett Cabriele/Wesleyan and Michael Bonitatibus/Loyola).

Perhaps the most experienced returnee on defense for the Huskers is C.W. Post-bound senior Stephen Burke.

Those were some of the more recognizable teams on the 1989 Yorktown Huskers, who beat Corning East 8-7 in overtime to win the Class B state championship. The Trojans were led by Casey Donegan, Todd Cavallaro and Dan Burnside.

It was the second state title in Husker history. (Yorktown has since won four more for a total of six.)

Let’s take a look back, shall we, to highlights of that classic played at Syracuse University’s Coyne Field

The high school lacrosse landscape is about to change in the northern tier of Section 1.

Add Don Connolly’s name to the ever-growing list of past Yorktown players taking the reins of a program in dire need of a fresh face and some new ideas.

Arlington is a massive school, one of the biggest in all of New York state. For years, it has been best known for its boys soccer prowess. But now, with Connolly taking over a lacrosse program that has taken baby steps in recent years, there’s a buzz that is both undeniable and unavoidable.

The Yorktown ‘Huskers appeared on their way to a big win over Chaminade yesterday when Hopkins-bound midfielder John Ranagan scored with 1:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to put Yorktown ahead 8-7.

But the Flyers’ Matt Gillan then scored with three seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The score came after Yorktown turned the ball over following an in-and-out violation in the restraining box moments earlier.

Kevin Interlicchio then scored with 2:28 left in the four-minute OT, giving Yorktown a dramatic 9-8 win.

John Ranagan will never forget the feeling.

No matter how hard he may try.

It was two years ago and Ranagan and the Yorktown ‘Huskers had just suffered a crushing 10-9 loss at Lakeland/Panas. It ended a string of 12 straight Yorktown wins in the Charlie Murphy Cup game.

“I wanted to make sure I never felt that way again,” said Ranagan.

Tonight, Ranagan made sure of it. He had five goals and one assist as the ‘Huskers held on for an 11-8 win over the visiting Rebels before a crowd estimated at more than 2,000.

As John Jay and Somers players lined up for the post-game handshake following Somers’ 10-7 win tonight, you could almost sense the feeling on both sides.

That while it was a big game — and, in fact, a very entertaining one — it was just Round 1.

I talked to players and coaches from both teams and asked them directly: Do you think you guys will meet each other again?

The answer in every case was a resounding yes.

Now, whether that’s in the Class B semifinals or finals — if it indeed does happen — remains to be seen. Especially after Greeley’s gutty performance in a 16-11 loss at Yorktown.
