It’s perhaps the premier lax extravaganza of the calendar year. Men’s and women’s teams of all age groups — from U-15 to Masters — converging on scenic Lake Placid in upstate New York for a week of non-stop lacrosse, better known as the 21st annual Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Classic.
The high school lacrosse landscape is about to change in the northern tier of Section 1.
Add Don Connolly’s name to the ever-growing list of past Yorktown players taking the reins of a program in dire need of a fresh face and some new ideas.
Arlington is a massive school, one of the biggest in all of New York state. For years, it has been best known for its boys soccer prowess. But now, with Connolly taking over a lacrosse program that has taken baby steps in recent years, there’s a buzz that is both undeniable and unavoidable.
On the right panel of this page, you can find the poll question asking you to pill the top rivalry in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.
Among the leading vote-getters is the annual Lakeland/Panas vs. Yorktown Charlie Murphy Cup game.
One of the most memorable games in the history of that rivalry came in 1991 when Yorktown pulled out a dramatic 9-8 overtime win.

There has been a lot of talk here as to why John Jay and Ridgefield don’t meet on a regular basis.
Well, wait no more, gang.
A “Dream Team” of former Syracuse stars that included Roy Colsey, the Powell brothers, Ric Beardsley, Rob Kavovit and Paul Carcaterra took on Rusty Red in the Division 1 championship game of the masters competition of the 20th annual Lake Placid Summit Classic this past weekend.
Colsey had four goals for Burnt Orange but Rusty Red won 12-10. Former Nyack and Princeton star Jon Hess and Bethpage native and former Hopkins star A.J. Haugen were among the standouts for Rusty Red.

We start off our post-game interviews following Ridgefield’s dramatic 7-6 win over Darien in last night’s FCIAC championship game at Brien McMahon High School with Roy Colsey, who led the Tigers to their first county title in his first year as coach.
Former Yorktown star Roy Colsey will be at John Jay High School in Cross River tonight to watch his alma mater take on the rival Indians.
But last night, Colsey enjoyed one of the most memorable days of his lacrosse career as either a player or coach. In his first year as head coach of Ridgefield, he led the Tigers to a triumph against powerful Darien — a dramatic 8-7 win.
Roy Colsey didn’t sleep well last night.
His baby son made sure of that. Not that it mattered anyway.
“I wasn’t going to get much sleep last night no matter what,” he said.
After all, today was the day Ridgefield had marked on its calendar for weeks — make that months. Maybe even years.
Few players in lacrosse history have accomplished what Roy Colsey has.
Now, the former Yorktown High School, Syracuse University and professional star is on the brink of doing some special things as a coach.
Check back this week for video interviews with the following Division I-bound Ridgefield players: attackmen Matt White (Virginia) and Colin Scott (Denver) and midfielders Matt Baker (Colgate) and Brendan Walsh (Fairfield).

Headstrong, charismatic, supremely confident … all these superlatives sum up Roy Colsey.
The new Ridgefield coach opened a new chapter in his illustrious career with a lopsided win over Bridgeport Central on Wednesday. The sky appears to be the limit for his team in 2009. Colsey has some high expectations, desires he says his players believe are very much attainable.
Colsey, the former All-American at Syracuse who needs no introduction anywhere in the civilized lacrosse world, recently sat down for an interview with LaxLessons.com, during which we discussed his team’s chances this season, other things pertaining to his previous coaching stops and what the future may have in store for a man who has excelled at virtually every level of the game.
As far as Roy Colsey is concerned, his first season as Ridgefield coach will be all about gaining respect.
And the former All-American at Yorktown and Syracuse is ready to do just about anything to make sure his team gets it.
No, seriously, anything.
“We will play anyone,” Colsey said. “This team does not get the credit it deserves, but that’s okay. We will. This is as good an offensive team as any in the country.”
