Weekly awards have just launched for collegiate conferences throughout the nation, and two former high school all-Americans from the Hudson Valley region are among the winners.
Somers’ Mike Novosel (pictured at right), a senior goaltender at Dartmouth, was named Ivy League player of the week.
Former John Jay star Chris Daniello, meanwhile, was named Big East offensive player of the week.
Both Novosel and Daniello came up big to lead their teams to win this past weekend. Novosel had 15 saves as Dartmouth opened the season with a win at Colgate. Daniello had a career-high four goals as Syracuse improved to 2-0 by beating Army.
Former John Jay star Chris Daniello scored three goals today as top-ranked and two-time defending national champion Syracuse beat Maryland 10-7 at the Carrier Dome in the Orange’s final scrimmage of the preseason.
Syracuse opens the season on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. against Denver in the debut of new Denver coach and Princeton legend Bill Tierney.
Hey gang. I just received an e-mail from Syracuse University’s assistant director of athletic communications, Mike Morrison, with some interesting news.
Two-time defending NCAA Division I champion Syracuse opened its scrimmage schedule today by beating Hofstra 7-6 and Le Moyne 15-8 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, marking the collegiate debut of Somers two-time all-American JoJo Marasco.
Former John Jay star Chris Daniello (pictured at left) and fellow attackman Cody Jamieson each had five points in the two scrimmages for SU.
Marasco (pictured at right), a freshman attackman for the Orange, scored the game winner against Hofstra with 2:18 remaining. New Canaan’s Paul Dubas played the fourth quarter in goal for the Orange, making four saves.
Daniello assisted on Syracuse’s first three goals as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Le Moyne. Daniello also scored a goal against Le Moyne. Marasco had an assist.
In the other scrimmage of the day, Hofstra beat Le Moyne 12-6. Former Yorktown all-American Tom Interlicchio scored a goal for Hofstra, giving the Pride a 5-2 lead early in the second quarter.
Syracuse has one remaining scrimmage — at noon on Friday, Feb. 12 — against Maryland at the Dome.
An interesting aspect of the Maverik Showtime National Recruiting Spotlight that just wrapped up today at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury is the many family connections.
One of them featured one of the top rising juniors in the nation, John Jay attackman Mike Daniello, and his brother, Chris, who is a key member of Syracuse’s two-time national championship squad.
