Terence Pfeifer, right, and Hicksville will face West Islip
in Tuesday’s Class A Long Island championship game.
Simply put, any of the three Long Island championship games are almost as big as a state final. This year will be no exception as six schools have emerged from the regular season and sectional wars to get to Stony Brook University for Tuesday’s state quarterfinal tripleheader. The winners advance to Thursday’s downstate semifinals at Middletown High School.

Both Somers and Ward Melville stated their case during the regular season.
That’s when the Tuskers beat John Jay for the first time since 2003 and the Patriots, who earlier in the season knocked Yorktown from the unbeaten ranks, did the same to West Islip on May 4.
Now, Somers is preparing to meet John Jay again and Ward Melville is set to square off one more time against West Islip.

It’s time.
For months, FCIAC fans have known this moment would arrive.
Though it nearly did not (thanks to an inspired effort by New Canaan in the FCIAC semifinals), Ridgefield and Darien will indeed be meeting for the FCIAC title.

By the end of the day Friday, our final-round matchups will be set everywhere but Class A in Suffolk.

When did John Jay/Yorktown become, well, John Jay/Yorktown?
As far as I can tell, it was 2004. I remember looking back at the crowd midway through the second quarter of the teams’ regular-season meeting (the first time John Jay ever won at Yorktown) and seeing the bleachers filled and fans rows deep along the fences.
Today, the Bulldogs, who are in their third year as a varsity program, can set a school record for wins in a season as Irvington, which went 9-7 last year, plays at Albertus Magnus at 4:30 p.m.
Many viewed last year’s Section 1 Class C final as a given.
Rye was going to win a fourth straight title.
Someone forgot to tell that to the Byram Hills Bobcats, who built a surprising 4-3 lead at the half. But the Garnets battled back and went ahead 5-4 in the third quarter on a goal by Rob Santangelo. The Bobcats then tied it at 5-5. Rye then scored five straight goals and wound up winning 10-5.
The teams meet for the first time since then today at 5 p.m. at Rye.

Iona Prep hopes to defend its CHSAA New York section championship today when it meets rival Fordham Prep for the second time in four days today.
The teams met on Friday in the opening round of the playoffs, with Iona Prep pulling out a 10-7 win. Fordham Prep then beat Monsignor Farrell 10-5 Saturday to advance to the finals.
Because today’s slate is headlined by a private school showdown between host Brunswick of Greenwich, the No. 10 team in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings, and New Jersey power Lawrenceville, which is coming off a 12-11 win over the No. 5 team in the rankings, Ridgefield.

This is Lew Janavey’s first go-round as a head varsity coach.
But prior to his arrival at Somers this season, he made a name for his self after serving for years as an assistant coach for Lakeland and then Lakeland/Panas under Frank Vitolo and Tim Weir.
Tonight, Janavey takes his Somers team to Panas where it will face Lakeland/Panas in a 7 p..m. game. (Note: It had originally been scheduled for 7:30 p.m.)
Just one team has beaten Yorktown this season: Ward Melville.
Today, the Patriots hope they can also deal another powerhouse its first loss when it visits West Islip, the No. 1-ranked team all season in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings.
It’s a light Monday on the schedule — one that could become even lighter if the rain projected for later today throughout the region winds up being as heavy as expected.
Chaminade climbed five spots to No. 7. Other than that, most of the other teams from the region remained in place.
Now to today. El numero uno on the slate is a Long Island showdown (and possible Nassau County championship preview matchup) between Cold Spring Harbor and Manhasse. This lax version of “Friday Night Lights” gets under way at 7 p.m. at Manhasset.
It’s a (relatively) light day on the schedule, which is one of the reasons we scheduled our college recruiting seminar for today at 7:30 p.m. at Mildred Strang Middle School in Yorktown Heights.
Army coach Joe Alberici, Fairfield coach Andy Copelan and former Yorktown/Gettysburg/Syracuse star Joe Ceglia will be our panelists. I’ll be moderating the festivities.
There will also be some news about some newly launched summer recruiting events.
Should be an interesting and informative night. Hope to see you all there.
Now, before we get to today’s games, be sure to scroll down through the posts and check our game report on yesterday’s 13-12 Lakeland/Panas win at John Jay. It was the Rebels’ first win over the Indians in nine seasons — and the regular-season game of the year so far in Section 1. We also have posted video interviews with several Rebels players.
Last weekend, we had one of the nation’s premier rivalry games, the Woodstick Classic.
This weekend, we have another one, as Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown meet for the Murphy Cup. (Just a quick FYI – you can check out that game on Cablevision. Don’t let the fact I’ll be part of the broadcast team prevent you from watching though.)
But that’s not till Saturday. Let’s get started with today.
It’s Showdown Saturday Eve, and there are actually a few more games on the slate today than you might think.
Before we get to today’s game, a quick note about tomorrow.
Tomorrow’s Yorktown-Darien game will be dedicated to memory of Tom L.
If you are a lacrosse player or coach in Yorktown or Darien, then you knew Tom Lener. Tom L., who died last November, attended hundreds of games each year — high school, college, summer camps, you name it.
Though he himself never played or coached, he was as well-known in the area as many who did. I’m told the winning team will receive a trophy in Tom L’s name.
We’re just two days away now from Showdown Saturday, folks.
And you can read all about one of the big games coming up — the nation’s longest standing high school lacrosse rivalry, in fact — as we preview the Woodstick Classic between Manhasset and Garden City today.
Today is the last busy day of action prior to Saturday. So let’s get right to it.

We’re just a few days away from Showdown Saturday, when there are no less than three marquee matchups featuring several of the leading teams in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings.
Yorktown at Darien (1 p.m.), Garden City at Manhasset (7 p.m.) and Ridgefield at Somers (7:15 p.m.) will tell us plenty.
But let’s take a look now at how things look going into those games.
There’s a battle for the ball during the showdown between Garden City and Lynbrook between GC’s Brian Fischer and Lynbrook’s Alex Maini earlier this week. Garden City pulled out a 5-4 win. (Photo by newsphoto.com. For more photos from the game, click here.)
It’s been a season of close calls for Bay Shore, which has seen three of its first five games decided by one goal — with two being losses (to Sachem East and West Babylon).
Today, at 4 p.m., Bay Shore visits a William Floyd team that is 3-1 with the lone loss coming against the top team in the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings, West Islip. In that game, William Floyd led 4-0 after the first quarter.
Now, Somers, which is unranked national and No. 19 in the LaxLessons.com rankings, will face the 17th-ranked team in the nation, Cold Spring Harbor, which checks in at No. 10 in the LaxLessons.com rankings.
Daniel Lohrfink of Byram Hills scores on this shot with 3:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, lifting Byram Hills to a 7-6 victory over Bronxville today in Armonk. It was one of many big games today, including some huge upsets on Long Island, where Ward Melville and Manhasset both suffered losses. (Photo by Jim Stout/MaxPreps.com)
We will be keeping a close eye on the weather this week. Starting today. Rain is supposed to arrive mid-morning and continue through mid-afternoon. Of course, unless there is heavy rain or thunderstorms, lax is usually played (depending on field conditions.) Stay tuned.
A couple of Long Island vs. Westchester showdowns. A huge Section 1 rivalry game. A West Coast visitor coming to Westchester. A men’s college tripleheader, marking the first time lax has ever been played at Giants Stadium.
If you’re a lax fan, you probably wish you had a clone today to catch it all.
The longtime CHSAA powerhouses will be renewing their rivalry today at 4:15 p.m. at Chaminade. St. Anthony’s is No. 2 in the LaxLessons.com regional rankings. Chaminade is No. 7.
John Brandofino, left, who scored 45 goals last season for Mahopac, picked up where he left on Tuesday, scoring six times in the Indians’ 11-5 win against Fordham Prep. Tyler Perrelle, who had 63 goals a year ago, scored four in the opener for Mahopac, which plays Somers on Thursday. (Jim Stout/MaxPreps.com)
1997. 2006.
Those are the lone years Yorktown has not won a sectional championship since 1979.
