Speed kills. It’s so important, in fact, that some players get by on it alone.
Add scoring ability, smarts and stick skills and you have a complete college prospect.
Meet St. Anthony’s midfielder Joe LoCascio, the 29th-ranked junior in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, who has given a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland.
LoCascio also has the bloodlines. His father played Division I lax, and his uncle is four-time UMass all-America goaltender and former MLL/NLL star Sal LoCascio.

Last season was a historic one for the Iona Prep Gaels, who won their first state championship.
Leading the way was a core group of four Division I-bound seniors, including Nick Trizano, who scored his 300th career point and finished second on the all-time state scoring list behind Casey Powell.
How will the new-look Gaels fare this year and what players will need to step up?
Those are among the topics were discussed with Fairfield University-bound senior Pete De Salvo.

Change is in the air, gang.
Way back, back, back in the spring – which already seems like years ago – we learned that cost-cutting geographically aligned leagues would make their way to Section 1 this coming season, meaning an end of the the power league.
But early last month, we reported on an even bigger change in the balance of power – one with potentially huge ramifications.
The Catholic League merger has now been officially adopted.
What does this all mean? Plenty.

of the newly formed 16-team New York Catholic League.

There’s some pretty big news on the Catholic school front, folks.
Yesterday, the lacrosse teams representing the New York Archdiocese approved a merger to form a 16-team league with those teams now in the Long Island Archdiocese. Formal approval is expected in November.
What does this mean? A pretty impressive eight-team “Super Division” that will include such teams as St. Anthony’s, Chaminade, Iona Prep and Fordham Prep, with all those teams eventually playing one another home-and-home during the regular season.

Today’s 13-6 Iona Prep win over Rye Country Day in the Metro tournament semifinals was no exception.
Well that’s not exactly correct.

Thanks to an impressive start, featuring Kevin Interlicchio’s unheard of 26 goals in just three-plus games, Yorktown rocketed up 11 spots to No. 7 in this week’s Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse power rankings.
Yorktown (4-0) was No. 22 in the publication’s preseason poll and moved up four spots last week, but after Saturday’s 14-10 win over national power St. Anthony’s and an 11-6 victory over Somers on Tuesday, the ‘Huskers have climbed into rarified air on the national stage.

Yes, folks. Just think about it. From now on (through most of the region at least), we won’t have to talk about scrimmages and precisely what they mean — if anything — in the grand scheme of things.
Because now, our friends in Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess are all joining Nassau by playing actual games. (With Fairfield soon to follow.)
