Mahopac will be looking to advance to the Section 1 championship game for the first time since 2005 when it hosts White Plains in the semifinals today.
Championship Week continues in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, gang.
Well, we should qualify that.
That’s because Long Island has a bye from the June 1 state regionals, with the LI champions advancing straight to the downstate semis on June 8 at White Plains High School.
So the Nassau and Suffolk title games won’t be till next week.
Sections 1 and 9 in the Hudson Valley, meanwhile, will crown its champions this Thursday.
What does this all mean?
Well, for starters, it allows college coaches to attend the Section 1 or Section 9 finals (Thursday, May 26 at Suffern and Middletown), Section 8 finals (Tuesday, May 31 at Hofstra) and Section 11 finals (Wednesday, June 1 at Stony Brook) — not to mention the FCIAC finals (Friday, May 27 at Brien McMahon in Norwalk) — without the scheduling conflicts that have occurred in years’ past.
It also allows the varsity coaches of the participating teams with more of an opportunity to personally scout possibly state semifinal opponents.
And that’s all a good thing.
Don’t forget, you can check out the entire downstate New York sectional schedule by clicking here. For the brackets for the state tournament, click here.
Now, to what’s on tap for today.
There are four Section 1 semifinals set for today in classes A and B.
Lakeland/Panas, the defending sectional Class A champ, visits top-seeded Suffern in a rematch of an early season game won by LP 10-9. The Mounties, who are looking to make the final for the first time since 2003, have extra incentive since Thursday’s sectional championship tripleheader will be at Suffern.
In the other Class A semi, either Mahopac or White Plains will be back in the sectional title game for the first time in a while. Mahopac last appeared in 2005 (when it fell to Yorktown 10-9). White Plains last made it in when Jimmy Carter was U.S. president, back in 1979. (The Tigers beat Fox Lane 9-5 that season, which coincidentally happens to be the last year Yorktown did not make the sectional finals.) Mahopac beat White Plains 13-1 in the regular season on April 30.
Somers, the top seed in Class B, will host John Jay, the defending sectional champion, in a rematch of a game played May 12, also at Somers, in which the Tuskers got late goals from Kieran Donohue and then Kevin Cousin to prevail 9-8. Somers and John Jay have met in the last two sectional finals, and two of the last three.
Yorktown, looking to make its 32nd straight sectional title-game appearance, hosts Tappan Zee in the other Class B semifinal, that’s a doubleheader with Yorktown’s girls’ team’s semi at Charlie Murphy Field.
Round 1 of the Nassau County quarterfinals are set for today at Hofstra University.
Don’t forget, because of weather-related adjustments, the Section 1 Class C semifinals will be tomorrow — not today. But we are listing those games along with today’s slate.
Also today, top-seeded Hackley hosts No. 5 Dalton in the NYSAIS semifinals at 4:30 p.m.
There’s also a full state of SCC and SWC quarterfinals in Connecticut.

Going to give the whole enchilada here. First Todays games, Im calling it revenge Monday.
Suffern – 12
Lake-Panas – 10
Mahopac – 13
White Plains – 7
Yorktown – Alot
Tappan Zee – a Little
John Jay – 11
Somers – 8
All-Americans-
Shuldt
Mabus
Schurr
Caffrey
Prunty
Walter
Foley
McCormack
Barton
Very Close
Weil
Lambert
Lombardo
Fahey
Berardis
Coaches
A-Haddelands
B-Lew Janavey
C- Tim Horgan
I agree with the All-American picks. Should be a day of very close games all across the board
weil and near over walter and mccormack i think
Jay vs. Somers rematch should be interesting. I think Town will pull away from TZ early and often enough to keep continuity going for the championship and the other games will be very close. Pac will handle WP and I’ll be daring and give Suffern the nod in OT.
Yes, It’s daring.
and doesn’t Fraylich need to be mentioned? and maybe Donahue over Barton?
Suffern won’t beat LP
If anyone could shed some light on this question that would be great because i have not been able to see many LP games. Caffery in my mind has without a doubt shown himself as an AA lock. But has Prunty been the same guy he was last year? Or is he being picked because he was an AA last year? I think your picks are pretty much on point. However it would be interesting to see if Lakeland still gets two AA’s even if they dont make the Class A finals, seeing as Suffern may not get any and Pac may only get one.
Just speculating, should be interesting to see how it plays out
Prunty is the best talent in the Section. If he played for Ytown he wouldn’t be going to Siena. He deserves AA and probably should be considered for POY in the section.
not sure I agree with any of the things you mentioned, other than he should definitely be an AA. Has not much help and will draw the best pole, doubles, etc. Very talented kid.
No way is Prunty the best talent in Section I – not even the best talent on his team. If LP gets one AA, it has to be Caffrey – the kid has carried that offense all year.
CPC must be related to Prunty because to say he is the POY this time around is delusional. Again, he is not even the player of his team.
Only comment is my impression is also that Caffrey has been the goal scoring machine this season with Prunty’s production down.
no relation at all. Just my opinion as well it is many other knowledgable, very reputable people around the section and college. Check back w/me next year. You’ll see. You could put Schultz or Mabus up there too.
what goalies?
Stephens at FL should be considered
the good goalies in the section are Larabee BR, Danehy mamo, Allen south, Flalic Pvill, IDK about Stephens
Id say but just an opinion all are good.
1. Stephens FL
2. Fraylick Pville
3. Larabee BR
4. Allen CS
5. Danehy Mamo
I’d add Weissmann of Greeley to that list.
Sorry, Cant get my head around barton as an AA. One move from behind the cage and thats it. just my 2 cents
Does anyone have any all section picks they are willing to share?
How many all section kids are named?
Somers will beat JJ 7-6 in tripple overtime
Long bus ride for LP again today. Good luck boys! Make it a nice trip home later tonight!
Assuming that Jay plays the way they did on Sat I’ll pick them over Somers in a close one.
But also have to say that Somers has shown they can “find a way” to win the big games.
Way to go out on a limb! 🙂
Class A
LP over Suffern 12-9
LP must stop Suffern. LP’s D has struggled mightily this year. Prunty must have big game and so must Monty on faceoffs. LP does not have a dominant Dman to contain McNally but must play well in front of Zingo and keep shots outside 10.
Pac over WP 9-6
Pac did not play well Saturday and needs to get right going into Thursday. They should win by more than this but I am skeptical of a trap here with the previous game vs WP being such a blowout. Don’t see anyway Pac loses though.
Class B
Town over TZ 22-5
Cant see TZ anywhere close except in 1st quarter. TZ could be the worst team Town has played all season. Look at their schedule and I would put them near a PV team. Sorry but this should not be a semifinal game at all. Town will be rested for Thursday.
JJ over Somers 9-8 OT
Walter being healthy helps alot. Lambert is playing well for JJ and Branca as well. Somers has had a lot of comebacks this season fall their way. I think they fall behind, fight back only to lose in the final minutes. Lets say a goal by Lambert off a faceoff.
Wont discuss C games for I haven’t seen too many of them play except Bronxville who is a good team with some talent.
Early predictions for Thursday.
Town over JJ 11-10
Pac over LP 14-11
Lets pray the rain stays away, at least the thunder. Going to Pac at 4:30 and then Somers at 6. Should be a fun day if weather holds out.
Joe, can you explain the next weeks schedule. Section 1 winners play Section 9 then Section 2? Wednesday then Saturday. Thanks.
The worst team Town could play all season will be in the State playoffs, the section 9 representative. Sorry, but that should not be a state playoff game…I expect TZ to represent themselves well.
I just got off the phone with Long Island, they are mad that the Nassau/Suffolk champs are on the same side of the state playoff bracket.
that wouldn’t be a bad idea to put the nassau and suffolk champ on opposite sides of state bracket
State Playoff History lesson. Since 1977, 1st year of states, Nassau and Suffolk champs have always been in the same bracket because they wanted a Long Island Champion to be declared. That year, Ward Melville was undefeated and played West Genesee in the Semi’s, and then lost to Elmont for the state championship.
YT – 10 TZ – 7 I’m thinking Yorktown/TZ closer than you think – Marr is not going to risk his starters. He is going to get the lead and the sub liberally. YT wants the win not injured players.
Somers – 9 JJ – 8 Lew needs to give the half time speech before the game and Somers needs to play like it is the 2nd 1/2 from the first face off.
L/P – 9 Suffern – 8 Lakeland is going to have to play their best game of the season and in these conditions it maybe difficult, L/P advantage is they have been here before.
Mahopac – 10 WP – 6 Another case where starters get pulled
Lakeland
Mahopac
Yorkyown
Somers
Pleasantville
Bronxville
What is this a list of? Certainly not the best teams in sect.1 1-6.
sir laxalot’s take on today’s “winners”.
Todays winners.
guessing lp-suffern and pac-wp are underway?
Mahopac 5
White Plains 1 @ half
5-1 pac at the half

Brendan Morris scores midway through the first quarter to give JJ a 2-0 lead over Somers.
Rios scores from Emanuel, then Lambert answers for JJ. 3-1 JJ after the first. Chen had JJ’s first goal
Brendan Morris gets his seond. 4-1 early in the second.
LP score?
Lakeland Wins 13-12 tripple OT
WOW – someone said triple OT on this blog a few days ago – not me. Wow.
It was a great game, but a disappointing end to a great season for Suffern. The WBB still love the team and support them all the way.
Good luck in the finals, D-Pac.
Thanks Blue. Tough loss, but a great season. Your team should be thankful for all the student support. We can use you guys on Thursday. Hey, Mahopac is blue too.
Donohue from Schurr 4-2 JJ.
LP and Suffern in double OT.
LP wins 13-12 in three OTs LP will play Mahopac in the Class A final on Thursday at 3 pm at Suffern MS.
Tony Laguerre got the game winner for LP.
Jake Weil unassisted. 5-2 JJ with two minutes left in the second quarter.
sounds like Lew needs a time out
ytown-jj/somers winner.ytown 10-8 in final thursday.
Suffern gives up 3 goal lead again. If they want to play with the big boys they need to learn how to finish. WE CAN’T HEAR YOU!
Tough loss for Suffern. LP and more specifically Caffrey played well and they got the win. Both teams played their hearts out and deserve recognition
Caffrey’s some player! He puts it in the net. How many? Sorry about the outcome. I bet Sleepy Mike played well L/P’s attack is good
Hey Boy. Congratulations on a great season. I know it was a tough loss, but Suffern earned a lot of respect this year from the “bigger programs”. Any chance of having the WBB support our team? We love those chants and can use the support.
Surely wasn’t me dude – tough loss, great season, props to suffern, there will be a balance in life fellas, you and tbwcw – like Vince Lombardi said “We didn’t lose the game, we just ran out of time.” Go Canucks! Go Bucks!
I did hear the head coach scream, Finish the game! last time the played and now today! He should learn how to talk to his kids… these kids are young and hurtful the way he scream at #4 was total WRONG! you do not hear coach Lindsey sreaming at his kids.. he yells way to much…
JJ leads 5-2 at the half.
YO JOE, is Daniello playing?
What Lew needs to do is take Eddie off faceoffs, hasn’t won one and can’t get back in time to play D.
JJ leads 6-2 on a goal by Forrest Walter.
Neither Daniello, Jimmy Morris or Tommy Beck are playing.
Cegielski pulls Somers within 6-4 with 5:15 left in the third.
Lombardo scores off the next FO. 6-5 JJ with 4:28 left in the third
Town up 3-0 6:48
Matt Ferentini answers for JJ. 7-5 with under two minutes left in the third.
4-0 Fusco with 2 5:50
5-0 4:05 Fusco with 3
7-5 JJ after three.
Looks like Somers has them right where they want them.
6-0 3:21 Fusco with 4 from Mariano
Town running 2nd line
7-0 Mabus to Schuldt 1:19
Princeton coach Chris Bates, a 1986 John Jay grad, is here at the game.
Still 7-5 JJ three minutes into the third.
Chen gets his second. 8-5 with eight minutes left.
8-0 Schuldt 0:51
Kevin Cousin unassisted. 8-6 JJ.
Cegielski pulls Somers within 8-7 midway through the third.
Kieran Donohue scores EMO goal. 8-8 with 5:40 left.
Town down 2 men one is 2 mins no release
8-0 end of 1
9-0 Gately from Thorpe 10:30
Lombardo scores his third. Somers has it’s first lead. 9-8 with 3:50 left fourth. Timeout JJ.
10-0 Mariano from
Mabus 8:59
Donohue makes it 10-8 On an empty net.
This game needs to be on MSG-V did JJ start doubling w/ the goalie. Why was it open net? Then JJ scores two in the last minute to tie it. And win w/ 4 secs in OT. Instant classic. Either game would of been worthy of LaxLive or a delayed HS SportsDesk. I’m left w/ Easport-SM v Harborfields replay on LI MSG-V in a blowout
ReLAX – I haven’t seen the footage yet. I’m going to check it out tomorrow at the studio. Then, we will be breaking down the highlights, have post-game interviews and previews of the finals on “SportsDesk” at 6 p.m. on Channel 14. (The show reairs at 9 p.m.) Between JJ-Somers and LP-Suffern, that’s definitely “must-see TV.”
Weil pulls JJ within 10-9 with 58 seconds left.
What a game!!!
11-0 Gately to Mariano 3:30
Forrest Walter ties it at 10-10 with 21 seconds left.
Schuldt and Mabus will carry ytown to sec1 title.whether jj or somers
If Jay gets past Somers…they win the section!!!
we’ll see i think ytowns a little better, but jj has beaten rye and somers so far.
10-10 going into OT.
12-0 Mariano back hand Goal 0:3
Somers turns it over with 1:47 left in first OT.
Jay win?
Mike Lupinacci scores with four seconds left in the first OT. JJ wins 11-10.
Alright Guys ! You deserve it! What a great effort !
Great game JJ!! Good luck against Ytown. Enjoy the win tonight than get ready for the “Thrilla in Suffern”
Somers great season nothing to hang head over, Many great wins this season, good job. You should be proud of your season.
13-0 long pole Trevor Koelch
14-0 Fusco with 5 9:30
14-1 8:45
John Jay plays either Yorktown or TZ in the Class B sectional final on Thursday at 5:30 at Suffern MS.
C’mon Joe, I love the journalistic discipline, but let’s call this one for Town early.
15-1 Fusco with 6 5:10
Wow, sounds like it was a game of the year candidate. Serious gut check there by John Jay.
15-2 4:12
Town took out Goale for start of 3rd
a mix of 2nd 3rd and JV who were brought up
15-3 0:53
End of 3 15-3
16-3 11:25
16-4 6:25
17-4 Nicky B with Goal
18-4 1:42
Final 18-4
Congrats to L/P for pulling off a tough one today. One of the best games I have seen in a long time. One of those games where you hate to see either team lose in the end. Lindsay, IMO, is one of, if not the best coach in the section. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a coach be able to will his team back time and again, throughout an entire year, all year long, sometimes when down by 6 or 7 goals at a time. This time they were finally able to finish the deal and win one in overtime after coming back again. Congrats to Suffern on a great year, they definitely went out fighting today.
Coach Lindsay & Garcia have this Rebel Team going in the right direction. Don’t count L/P out yet. Caffrey with 8 goals and an outstanding goalie performance again.
Caffrey’s a goal scoring machine. Great stick & field presence. Always seems to be in the right place & he spots his shots on the goalie w/ precision. He’s the man!!
Way to go Jay! We knew you could do it – we never lost faith!
Yorktown – here we come!
ytown vs jj.marr vs schurr will be fun.gotta love marr and these young guns suporting mabus and schuldt.town10 jj8
5 straight section final appearances for Jimmy Lindsay’s boys? I could be wrong not too solid on the history.
I don’t remember the last time L/P was not in the A finals. Going back to when they were just Lakeland. There were a few Mahopac/Town A finals a while back; other then that they have been in the game perennially. Yorktown’s record of showing up to the big show’s championship is insane. Jay has been to it 13 times since 1995 .
Nice to see these teams from around the area maintaining that level of play and tradition year in and year out.
It is 5 in a row for LP – Lost to Jay in the semis in 2006
8 in a row for Jay – looking for 6th title in 7 years
Of course, ran out of fingers and toes trying to count up Town’s streak
It’s now 32 straight sectional finals for Yorktown. But who’s counting? Really though, one of the more amazing streaks you’ll find anywhere in the sports world.
2005 and 2006
Big win for Jay, balanced scoring from seniors morris, weil, walter, chen, and lupinacci. All these different players to cover makes it’s hard on the D. Down 10-8 with 80 seconds left on the clock. 2 goals to tie and the winner with 4 seconds left. One of the more exciting JJ games ever. Somers fought hard to get back into it. They capitalized on a few J mental errors… procedure call, offsides, blown pass or two. In the end J just wanted it more (face offs, ground balls, and big time shots). Somehow fitting that this group of J seniors will play in the section 1 finals against YTown. Go J.
Jack Stewart played a great D middie per usual.
Wow…those sound like two SICK semi’s!!! Anyone lucky enough to see either should be happy. A triple OT & 4secs left in OT incredible. So bummed I missed them. Congrats to all four teams. Nobody’s a loser in them. Suffern scoring 2 back to back to get to 12 & Somers coming all the way back from 6-2 in the 3rd. Hold your heads high!!! And to the winners…Classic match-ups in suffern on thurs. PAC/LP & JJ/Ytown is what sect1 Finals are all about! Standing O fellas!!!!!!
Man, sounds like I’ve missed a TON of great games this year. Tough way to lose for these teams.
Just a reminder. I know emotions often run deep in the postseason, but please remember to keep your comments pertinent to what happens on the field. And as always, be respectful to other posters, even if you do not share the same rooting interests.
JJ v Somers:
This was one for the ages.
Superb effort by John Jay! It’s nice to see these kids close with such intensity.
Somers played an excellent game. I hope every kid on the team knows that they put in a huge effort and played a really great game. They should be proud.
Was at Jay/Somers. Congrats to Jay.
Great game and effort by both teams. In my mind too many kids on both teams played well and contributed in important ways and at various times to mention anyone in particular. Terrific to see Somers hang in there and come back to take a 10-8 lead and Jay for not folding when down by 2 goals with less then 2 minutes to go.
“JayUpdate”: IMO to say that Jay “wanted it more” is an inaccurate unfair and unnecessary cliche to describe Somer’s great effort in an 11-10 OT loss.
Absolutely, be glad you won the game. Remember Somers came back from 6-2 in the 3rd. So guess we can infer that when JJ let Somers come charging back they didn’t want it so much, but then they wanted it more when they scored the two goals @ the end of reg & w/ 4 secs in OT.
Point well taken slacrosse. There have been a few close games this year for J (1 or 2 goal losses) where the other team “wanted it more” and in the those games J just did come up with the timely ground ball or respond after losing a lead. Last night they did. Somers wanted it too and that was obvious as each and every player left it all out on the field. Somers is a very good team who seniors will have plenty of success at the next level.
Agreed. Great game momentum back and forth, great lax players on both sides, too bad but someone had to lose. Somers played their heart out and showed mental toughness in their comeback. Wonder how what the dinner conversation at the Shurr house was like last night?
Sounds like a fabulous LP/Suff game and congrats to LP for the win.
Good to see Suffern that has been in the shadows of the other big teams in Northern Westchester make a real statement as to where their program is. The future looks bright!
Probably totally unfounded but heard a rumor coming out of Baltimore that Petro may be considering the Michigan spot when (if?) it is officially announced.
that would be a shocker..petro just signed like a 5 year extension…and with no other D1 sports at Hop, he has total control. Football and hoops are the kings at Michigan..
Yeah guess the the 5 yr extension kills that rumor.
But not sure the “total control” argument would keep him there. If/when Mich goes D1 they’ll do it right like Michigan does in sports and provide the Coach with all the tools he needs to build a top D1 program. Also not sure the “big fish in a small pond” works either. Being part of Michigan D! sports has its own strong draws and I think the team will be very well supported by fans where in the midwest, lax is booming.
well, let’s agree to disagree…better yet, let’s bet lunch, I am sure I can find a very high priced, tony spot in Rye
That would be a great idea but can’t get a seat in the toniest places because all the REALLY tony people from Bcliff come over and book the tables!!
Might want to rethink “..they’ll do it right like Michigan does in sports ” The Fab 5 never saw the inside of a classroom and the mess Rich Rod created in football!
actuially, those b’cliff people don’t eat out…they have chefs
I think Michigan has a ways to go before they are even on a par with their Big ten counterparts, Ohio state and Penn State. It seems they are going to stick with their current Head Coach for now, who is certainly not yet on the level of a Coach Tambroni, e.g. So I’d expect at least five years of sub-.500 ball at the outset, then we’ll see if either the dam breaks with regard to NCAA D1 programs being able to circumvent the Title IX issue, or if they go the other way and decide lacrosse isn’t worth it. At least they’re heading in the right direction for now.

D-Pac you’re a class act. The sportsmanship you’ve displayed has been great to see. Good luck vs LP.
Thanks Rock. Would have loved to see the Blue Men. Come out and support us. Would love to introduce myself to you guys.
Jay/Town
To close for me to pick. This is a far better Jay team then the one that faced Town early in the season. On the other hand Town has also gotten better as well. Jay is coming off 2 wins vs good teams so might be a great “mo” and an “edge” for them. But can they keep the intensity going (assume they can)? Town had a bye and hasn’t had a challenging game in the playoffs. Will they be a bit flat? (dont think so).
Pac/LP
Here I’d go with Pac as they have both offensive weapons and more importantly, a solid defense. If they can hold Caffrey down, in particular, bodes well for them winning. LP can score but their D has been more challenged to perform well.
Good luck to all four teams!!
JJ is missing Daniello though when they had him in the 1st game. Interesting game matchups throughout.
Didn’t have Walter or Bennett. First game of the year, much has changed. Jay will need to play a strong game for 4 quarters.
Though it hurts me to do this using my mind not my heart
Town 11 JJ 9 (Town will have less turnovers)
Only good thing about this is that the winner doesn’t have to play Nisky in next round. Pac or LP get that honor,
Shen already beat Nisky
