It was a first for Ridgefield — and its head coach.

The Tigers beat Yorktown for the first time last night, and for the first time, Colsey picked up a win against his alma mater, where he was arguably the best overall player in school history before enjoying a star-studded career at both Syracuse and in the professional ranks.

Ridgefield beat Yorktown 14-8 led by the University of Vermont-bound Andrew Buckanavage’s three goals and three assists.

Colsey had been head coach at Horace Greeley before coming to Ridgefield three years ago.

Ridgefield outscored Yorktown 9-1 in the second and third quarters to pull away before a large home crowd at Tiger Hollow Stadium. Ridgefield had trailed 4-2 after the first quarter.

“Great win for Ridgefield tonight,” Colsey said. “Having the opportunity to play Yorktown and test ourselves against a program that does so much year in and year out is an honor.

“I am, and always will be a huge fan of Yorktown.  I couldn’t be more proud of my players and I hope this win helps them to believe in their ability to accomplish the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season.

“As a program, a win against Yorktown is something to be proud of. But more importantly,  it is something to build on and learn from.”

The win completes a Section 1 trifecta of sorts for Ridgefield, which earlier this season beat 2009 Class B champion Somers 9-8 and 2010 Class B champion John Jay 9-7.

Is Ridgefield the biggest surprise so far this season in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lax, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region?

shout out to big Al…way to go! still using that backer zone? (I know you would say the D is what did it for the Tigers)

  2. Just a Fan says:

Very poor offensive performance by Yorktown.

I agree. Poor showing by Yorktown. After the first quarter, they looked like the were looking to get back on the bus and go home. Working on the mental aspects are important.
Good work by Ridgefield. The varsity goalie (and the JV goalie)were noticed by all.
