What a day for lax.

It’s the first full Saturday of action of the season, and almost on cue, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid 50s under partly cloudy skies.

So are you ready?

Wait. I couldn’t hear you.

Let’s try again.

Are you ready?

That’s better.

First off, before we run down what’ s on that for today, please make sure your cell phone is fully charged before heading out to the action so that you can post frequent score updates on whatever game you attend right here on this thread.

Today’s schedule is highlighted by three highly awaited showdowns — Garden City at Ward Melville, John Jay at Yorktown and Delbarton at St. Anthony’s — as well as a talent-filled tournament at Northport.

We’ve broken down the teams — and the games — for quite some time here. There’s not much more to say at this point, to be honest, other than – let’s get the games going.

Before we run down today’s slate (including some intriguing scrimmages in Connecticut), please allow me a quick word about yesterday’s action.

The big news of the day was Manhasset eking out a 12-11 win over rival Cold Spring Harbor. The closeness of the game was a bit of a surprise considering ‘Set is the two-time defending Class C state champions (having beaten CSH in the Nassau finals each of those last two years) while CSH was coming off a 6-1 loss to Hicksville.

Now, to today’s slate.

First, a quick programming note.

If you’re not out and about this afternoon, you can catch the Delbarton-St. A’s clash live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum) at 2:30 p.m. It’s the first of weekly live lax broadcasts on the nation’s only 24/7 network devoted to high school athletics and activities.

Now, here’s today’s schedule:

Northport Tournament: Eastport/South Manor vs. Walt Whitman, 10 a.m.; Corning vs. Northport, noon; East Islip vs. Mahopac, 2 p.m.; Shoreham-Wading River vs. Rocky Point, 4 p.m.
Harrison at White Plains, 9 a.m.
Roslyn at Locust Valley, 9 a.m.
Bellmore Kennedy at Copiague, 10 a.m.
Wantagh at Hen Hud, 11 a.m.
Carey at Bethpage, 11 a.m.
Bayshore at Madison (N.J.), 11 a.m.
Hempstead at Herricks at Herricks Community Center, 11 a.m.
Plainview JFK at Island Trees, 11 a.m.
Pearl River at Kennedy Catholic, 11 a.m.
Wappingers at Haldane, 11 a.m.
Longwood at Harborfields, 11 a.m.
Elmont at Uniondale, 11 a.m.
Friends Academy at Lynbrook, 11 a.m.
Bronxville at Fox Lane, noon
Hastings at Clarkstown North, noon
Great Neck North at Commack, noon
Putnam Valley at Byram Hills, 1 p.m.
Garden City at Ward Melville, 2 p.m.
Delbarton at St. Anthony’s, 2:30 p.m.
Fordham Prep at Comsewogue, 3 p.m.
Floral Park at Jericho at Robbins Lane Park, Syosset, 6:30 p.m.
Yorktown at John Jay, 7 p.m.
Holy Trinity at Seaford, 7 p.m.
Ardsley at Mamaroneck, 7 p.m.

With the regular season starting next week in Connecticut, today is a busy day for scrimmages. Ridgefield, the 2009 FCIAC champion, hosts Sayville at 10 a.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium after beating Manhasset 7-5 in a scrimmage a week earlier.

In other CT scrimmages of note, Greenwich hosts Hotchkiss at 3 p.m. and Darien will be holding another jamboree, starting at 8 a.m. This one will include another defending state champ, Cheshire, as well as Staples.

Put those cell phones to good use
Be sure, as always, to weigh in with info/thoughts/scores on games you attend. And don’t forget to put those mobile phones to good use in providing in-game updates, gang.

Big City Classic, college schedule
The college lax spotlight will be on the metro area on Sunday as the New Meadowlands Stadium serves as the host site once again for the Big City Classic tripleheader. A showdown between Syracuse and defending national champion Duke highlights the slate. Put valley is going to byram at 1, not white plains…

i like the bobcats 8-6 in this class c match up

major playoff implications are on the line

  2. BH Laxer says:

FYI-Byram Hills plays Putnam Valley today at BHHS, not White Plains. Should be a good game between two of the better teams in Class C.

  3. WestLax says:

    Quick predeictions:
    St. Anthony’s big over Delbarton
Ward Melville wins in a low scoring game
    Yorktown wins in 2 OT’s

  4. LI Lax says:

    ESM 9, Whitman 5- Final

Northport with an early 3-1 lead over Corning.

  5. Conor STATESly says:

    Yorktown 9 John Jay 7

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

Just got a report that Bronxville leads Fox Lane 7-0 midway through the second quarter.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Still 7-0 Bronxville through three quarters. Sophomore sensation Jack Grass has four goals.

      • big ron says:

Kennedy Catholic wins 4-3 and starts off 2-0

      • Joe Lombardi says:

Final: Bronxville 9, Fox Lane 1.

Here are stats courtesy of the talented and hard-working Jim Stout of MaxPreps.com:

Jack Grass, four goals (two in first 5:00)
        Jack Near, two goals
        Charlie McCormick, two goals
        Peter Donohue, one goal

  7. Joe Lombardi says:

Jared Greenberg, co-anchor of MSG Varsity’s “High School SportsDesk,” reports that Garden City has taken a 2-1 lead over Ward Melville with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. After GC took a 1-0 lead with 5:26 to go in the first, Ward Melville tied it at the 2:40 mark.

    Stay tuned for more updates.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

It’s now 2-2 late in the first quarter.

      • Joe Lombardi says:

WM takes its first lead. It’s 3-2 with 40 seconds left in the first period.

        • Joe Lombardi says:

The Patriots just scored their third straight and now lead GC 4-2 three minutes into the second quarter.

          • Joe Lombardi says:

GC scored an extra-man goal with just over a minute to go before halftime. WM now leads 5-4.

Jared reports both teams are 1 of 2 on EMOs.

  8. info says:

Told that East Islip leading pac 4-2

  9. Joe Lombardi says:

A goal by John Edmonds just before the end of the second quarter has given host Ward Melville a 6-4 halftime lead over Garden City.

  10. Paclaxfan says:

5-2 east islip at the half

  11. Bp says:

Bronxville going to be tough to beat in c. Grass huge addition! Great kid too! Wouldn’t be surprised if pg is much improved in late may though.

  12. LI Lax says:

Pacfan, any idea the Northport-Corning score?

    7-5 WM in the third

  13. Joe Lombardi says:

Tyler Hagerty’s second goal of the day gives WM a 7-5 lead midway through the third after GC pulled within 6-5 on a goal by Patric Berkery.

  14. LI Lax says:

    8-5 WM

    • LI Lax says:

      9-5

      • LI Lax says:

        10-5

        • USSOCOM says:

I can’t believe no one brought up the officiating at the GC WM game. GC trailing, 6-5, were hit with five straight penalties (11 on the day), two of them on the bench. Which led to 4 straight by WM. Don’t get me wrong WM played a great game but it all came from one offical that refussed to switch sides after the half.

  15. slacrosse says:

Bville way overpowered Fox Lane in all aspects. 1st game for Fox so sure they’ll get better (as will Bville).

Not surprisingly Near, McCormick looked like high D1 players and also impressed with soph Grass. Not sure about how strong PV, BH, or Pville are are but from waht I saw today I’d have Bville the team to beat in Class C.

O speaks for itself but hard to say from this very one-sided game just how good Bville’s D is–Have to wait until they play much tougher games.

    • SWLAX says:

The boys played well yesterday. Score could have been a lot higher, but FL stalled the entire second half (have never seen a team down 7 goals get hit with a stall warning (multiple times) until yesterday, not sure what they were thinking). You left B’Ville out of your top ten Joe, are they going to break into it this week?

  16. LI Lax says:

    Wantagh beat Hen Hud 15-3.

  17. Joe Lombardi says:

WM has just scored back-to-back goals to make it 10-5 after three.

    • Joe Lombardi says:

Garden City allowed 10 goals or more just twice all of last season – a 10-9 double-OT loss to Wantagh and an 11-5 loss to JD in the Class B state title game.

  18. Pequa says:

    Smithtown East 10
    Miller Place 7

  19. LI Lax says:

    10-6, Dwyer from Berkery

  20. Joe Lombardi says:

St. Anthony’s leads Delbarton 4-3 in the second quarter. If you’re in front of a TV now, be sure to watch the game live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum).

  21. wizard2 says:

PUTNAM VALLEY 9 BRYAM HILLS 7 FINAL

    • Quakers says:

byram hills must have hit 10 posts in this one. they got many penalties down the stretch and definitely had multiple opportunities to win it just couldn’t buy a goal. putnam valley is a solid team all over the board. K. Christopher definitely their go to guy.

      • slacrosse says:

Sounds like both BH and PV vs. Bville will be tough Class C games

        • Pleasantville Lax says:

Caught the BH PV game today. Good game, great intensity but many turnovers especially for BH.

1st half was owned by PV for the most part, PV had their way and BH was struggling on defense/goal and BH had minimal flow/movement on offense. Don”t know why BH goalie tries to run ball out of his own zone. Its not effective and typically ends up in a turnover. BH needs to work on their clearing game. And FYI BH-being able to run fast is only good if you able to keep the ball in your stick.

2nd half BH dominated the 3rd period in terms of time of possession, etc. they won face offs, won ground balls. Closed score to 8-7 by the end of the 3rd. BH had PV on the ropes.

4th quarter BH commits too many errors again, turnovers on the clear, middles who can’t or wont use their left hand so instead BH gets pushed out of bounds.

Good win for PV but BH had its chances.

  22. LI Lax says:

Ward Melville 10, Garden City 7 FINAL

  23. Bp says:

  24. playlax says:

  58. roach says:

    is Daniello playing ?

  59. Syracuse says:

Joey Sialiano makes it 11-4 Yorktown with 7 minutes to go.

  60. Syracuse says:

Yes, Daniello is playing. He scored the game’s first goal. Yorktown up 11-4 with less than 7 to play.

  61. Syracuse says:

Joey Sialiano scored Yorktown’s 11th goal.

  62. Syracuse says:

Conor Gately scores his second, giving Yorktown 5 two-goal scorers and a 12-4 lead.

  63. NICK says:

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AT THE GAME?

  64. Syracuse says:

Daniello and Weil score back-to-back for Jay. It’s 12-6 Yorktown with 4:29 left.

  65. Syracuse says:

Lambert scores from Brown for Jay. It’s 12-7 Yorktown.

  66. Lax says:

JJ has many injuries. Jimmy Morris, Tom Beck, Forrest Walter, and Daniello is banged up and not 100%

  67. Syracuse says:

Yorktown 12, John Jay 7 — Final. Joe will have plenty of thoughts I’m sure later or tomorrow. It’s hard to make anything more out of this game other than it was the opener for both, Jay was missing four starters, Daniello played injured and Yorktown has plenty of balance and depth offensively. Goaltending also will be something to watch for both going forward.

  68. the flea says:

Cant count Beck he is out for the year. Morris might come back end of may

  69. the flea says:

JJ have fun with RYE on Tuesday. Can you say 0-2. Wow doesnt it stink when you have more talent and lose big

  70. LAXman says:

It’s unfair to make excuses, and this is coming from a Jay fan. JJ has underperformed hopefully they can get it together later in the season. Awesome job Yorktown.

  71. the flea says:

School house road where are you?????? Lets here your excuses?

  72. Syracuse says:

Big shout out to THE CROP. Hope to hear from you my man. Back to hockey. Adios folks.

    • Fox Lax says:

all JJ has to do is bring up the younger kids from the JV and replace the most of the juniors from JJ varsity and they will be fine. It will bring the depth they need to get over the hump until the injured starters return.

  73. cove rd says:

I still want to know why jj always comes out flat. Town has a lot better athletes. The tide has changed back to town having the athletes and jj having the lax players

  74. Husker21 says:

    Yeah ‘Town!!!!

  75. cove rd says:

Thats a lot of goals for the guru to give up. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. JJ IS STOKED

  76. laxman says:

Well played game by Town coming out with a big win. They came more prepared all around. Jay is banged up but still could have played much better. Jay can only improve when getting those 3 starters back so dont freak out Jay fans theres room for improvement. Town looked strong offensively and defensively and will do great in the section.

  77. Laxn says:

Real big crowd tonite – lined up along both fences.

  78. school says:

3 starters out were Beck out for year. Morris blown out knee might return late may? Forrest walter out with shoulder injury for 2 weeks maybe longer.

  79. slacrosse says:

As advertised pre-season and most impressive to me was Town’s offense which was really potent from all positions and thought their goalie looked pretty good. Think they had the advantage in FO. D looked pretty solid. But in fairness to Jay, I don’t think Town’s D was fully tested with a depleted Jay offense.

Hearing the comments again about Town’s “athletes” vs Jay’s lax players. I don’t buy it. I saw plenty of pure skilled lax players just as Jay has.

On the other hand I was surprised that Jay’s D looked so porous. Were they missing starters on D as well? I did think Branca looked pretty good and had strong clearing passes.

For sure Jay will improve quickly as the season progresses + having most of their starters returning.

Good luck to both teams going forward.

  80. NYmike says:

slacrosse always offers outstanding, unbiased reports of the games – always look forward to his insights.

  81. lax says:

Regarding Bronxville D, at halftime with a 7-0 lead they dialed it down and Fox Lane had the ball for 9:30 of the 3rd quarter without scoring so draw your own conclusions.

  82. South of 287 says:

    Bville is real deal Holyfield

JJ playing Rye this week – tough opening games.

Is section down this year? Curious how out of Section games play out. Could be ugly…

  83. Mamo Update says:

Mamaroneck defeated Ardsley tonight 15-3. I got a chance to attend the game so I’ll share my opinion with you readers. At the faceoff x, over time it proved relatively even, but Ardsley’s attack had HUGE ball possession issues. Balls dropped all over the place.

The ground ball advantage went to Mamo, which was very strong in transition. Essentially through 3 quarters Mamaroneck scored on every shot they took credit to their ball movement and poor goaltending.

You can tell Ardsley has a one very talented midfielder and a nifty attackman who combined for all their scoring, but the ball protection issues and unforced errors plagued the panthers who didnt end up getting many good looks on cage.

Pete Conolly for Mamo had a big day and was often left open in the crease. Mamo long pole ferguson has a monster night. Going into the season no one really had Mamo in the top 4 in class A, but as an unbiased source, Mamo looked very strong even without 3 of their starters to injury. They certainly are better than WP if not Mahopac.

This was really a tough matchup for Ardsley a small class C team playing an up and coming class A team…however still look for Ardsley to make noise in class C in a very manageable league

    • slacrosse says:

You may have seen my comment on the Bville game. Very positive on Bville and in partic, Near, McCormick and Grass.

Shame that Bville is not playing any of the traditional power league teams except for PV (or IP) as that would really show how good Bville is, particularly on defense which was, to say the least, not tested at all yesterday. No question that B scores goals on anyone but just can’t judge” the D based upon the Fox game.

Funny, like Bville’s football team. You knew they were very good (and freakishly huge) but could only theoretically guess as to where they would be in Class A.

Well you cant do anything about school size and cudos to Bville with such a small size for putting out some teams that could definitely compete with the big boys.

  86. SWLAX says:

At full strength, I agree, but at the moment, it’s the case, IMO.

  87. slacrosse says:

Can’t be as bold as some above given so early in the season but have seen a number of teams play. Best I can do a/o yesterday:

    Overall
    Town
LP (how good is their D?)
Jay (yeah I give them the benefit even with injuries-they will DEF improve)
Rye,Somers,Bville,IP, PV, Pac (in NO particular order)
    Suff
    BH,Mamo (in NO particular order)

    Class A
    LP
    Pac
    Suff
    Mamo/Arlington
    Could be long season: WP

    Class B
    Town
    Jay
Rye, Pac, Somers (no particular order)
    Greeley
    Could be long season: Fox

    Class C
    Bville
    PV
    BH
    Pville

    Injuries

Seem to be a big factor starting this season vs last. Jay,Mamo and others not alone. Rye has a few starters that have not played in any scrimmages yet. Hopefully 1 or both will see action in the Jay game but they won’t be at 100% for sure.

  88. South of 287 says:

Mamo-Bville this week – see bville win with their mids controlling the ball and Mamos injuries catching up against a solid opponent though mamo goalie is a difference maker.

    • slacrosse says:

Yeah shame Mamo has a number of injuries–would like a level playing field for this one-good luck. Saw Bville, potent attack but no thoughts on their D at this point.

They play again later in the year, which should be a much better game. I think Mamk can contain McCormack and Near, but that third threat of Grass may be a problem. But yes, Mamk’s goalie may be the best in the section
