We start what should be a busy — and eventful — weekend with an eye on the weather.
The fast-moving Nor’easter that is sweeping its way through the region through Thursday night and Friday morning has already resulted in several postponements.
The showdown between New Jersey power Delbarton and two-time New York CHSAA champ St. Anthony’s, scheduled for 7 p.m. today, has been moved to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. It will be broadcast live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum).
A Rockland County clash between Clarkstown North and Albertus Magnus scheduled for today has also been postponed, along with the Section 1 Mamaroneck vs. Hastings and Scarsdale vs. Tappan Zee games.
The good news is that the storm will have moved out to sea well before the start of many of the big games that are scheduled for Saturday, which is expected to be partly cloudy with temperatures topping out around a balmy 50 degrees in some parts of the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse hotbed, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region.
Now, before we get to what’s scheduled for today — and we emphasize the word “scheduled” (check back frequently for updates on the status of the games, of course) — a quick word about yesterday’s games.
As most of us know, those of you who read these “Gameday” posts are looking forward, not behind, but one score from yesterday is worthy of highlighting.
I’m referring to Arlington’s 9-8 win over two-time Section 1 Class C champion Putnam Valley.
Some seemed surprised when I ranked the Admirals among the Top 10 teams in the Hudson Valley/Westchester region. That ranking came after I boldly (some may say mistakenly) stated that coach Donny Connolly’s Arlington squad has the potential to eventually be an emerging power in Section 1 lacrosse. (You can catch that comment by watching the MSG Varsity “High School SportsDesk” video clip by clicking here.)
Now, two games does not a season make. I get that. (After all, Arlington started off 8-0 last year before finishing 10-7.)
But wins over Brewster and Put Valley back to back to start the season would be a great way to start for anyone.
Especially noteworthy has been the play of an Arlington defense that features four college committed players.
Now, to today’s scheduled slate of games.
At the top of another long list of scheduled contests is the one between longtime rivals Manhasset and Cold Spring Harbor, who have met six straight years in the Section 8 Class C title game.
Now, we can guarantee it won’t be seven years in a row. (Manhasset, of course, has moved up to Class B.) And with the Seahawks coming off a 6-1 loss to Hicksville and Set having beaten Bethpage 13-5, the Indians are big favorites, but it always seems to be interesting when the teams meet.
Also of note – Syosset faces a Sachem North squad expected to contend for the Suffolk Class A crown and Somers visits Iona Prep in the latest round of what has been a highly contested series the last few years.

Today in New Ro
Ions Prep-11
Somers-8
My picks
Sachem North 11, Syosset 5
Set 7, CSH 2
Just got word that Somers leads Iona Prep 3-2 after one quarter. More updates to follow.
Iona Prep 4, Somers 3 – halftime. Anthony Lombardo has been dominant on faceoffs for Somers, but the Gaels outscored the Tuskers 2-0 in the second quarter.
Iona Prep has widened the lead to 6-3 with 6:48 left in the third.
Somers has scored twice in a two-minute span and now trails 6-5 with four minutes remaining in the third.
who’s scoring joe?
Our man on the scene unfortunately doesn’t have a roster, but is still doing a great job feeding me the info, CO.
Iona leads 7-5 with 3:58 remaining. Luke Wooters has a pair of goals for the Gaels.
Nyack 7- North Rockland 6
Nyack scores two in the final minute to beat north rockland. nyack probably doubled up on gbs and won just about every faceoff. Bad loss fr NR
Somers pulls within 7-6 on a goal by Kieran Donohue with 1:18 left.
this would be a huge win for the gaels moving foward. no one believed in their defense execpt that team and its coaches and they are proving their worth today.
Who would faith after town almost scored 20 on them, scrimmage or not?
I never said they SHOULD have been expected to doo much, I was stating that they werent and it was shocking to most on the outside how well they played. I am merely pointing out that yesterdays performance should give them more confidence to keep improving, the way they did after that yorktown debacle, not hating because no one beieved in them.
IP holding on to a 7-6 lead. There’s 17 seconds left. The Gaels have the ball and call for a timeout.
Final: Iona Prep 7, Somers 6
South Side 8, Hewlett 7
Port Wash 11, Uniondale 7
Islip 16, HHH West 6
Interesting for I was at Iona scrimmage vs Town and Iona got handled. Was at least 10-14 goal lead in 4th when Iona scored some vs Town backups. I only write this for it may be just a 3 way race with JJ, Town and we will see about Rye. Very interesting I think.
Iona is not down this year at all. They played great
Luke Wooters- 3goals
John Castellano-2goals
Ben Borsellino-2 Goals
Cold Spring Harbor has rallied to tie Manhasset 6-6 with seconds remaining in the first half, reports Ty Xanders of Inside Lacrosse. Set had held a 6-1 lead.
CSH now leads 8-6 early in the third.
Cold Spring Harbor is clinging to a 9-8 lead after the end of the third quarter.
keep em coming – any updates?!
Set has rallied to go ahead 11-10 with four minutes remaining in regulation.
and……….?
It’s still 11-10 Manhasset with two minutes left in regulation. The teams are returning to the field after a timeout.
Ty now reports that after Manhasset widened the lead to 12-10, CSH has pulled within 12-11 with 20 seconds remaining.
Final: Manhasset 12, Cold Spring Harbor 11
Calling the Cut and Paste police right now.
LOL. Just to clarify, folks are welcome to share info regarding games from here as they see fit. But if it’s specific game details, they should always credit the source – a. so people know it’s credible and where it came from, and b. because it’s the right thing to do.
Who is this Little Bo Peep character on Laxpower who cut and paste all the Set-CSH updates from this site anyway? He needs to learn some NET-iquette.
More scores …
Sachem North 14, Syosset 7
Smithtown West 16, Sach East 5
Floyd 10, East Hampton 9
Baldwin 5, Hicksville 4
Somers stats vs Iona…
Donohue 3-0
Lombardo 2-0
Emanuel 1-0
K Cousin 0-3
Goalies: C Cousin, Devito
LBP is all good. Just helping out and they all werent from here anyway. Good lax fan
On second thought maybe they were but thats ok, most of us look at both anyway or you wouldnt know, right ?
After seeing that. And also after learning what is going on. Somers is in BIG TROUBLE. May not make the playoffs at all, nevermind win anything!!!!
let’s go easy Bear. I think iona is better than people expect/ saw vs. town, and there’s alot of time between now and playoffs. Iona can go on to big things, and we could all look back at this game and say it was a quality game for somers, only losing by one in a hard fought game. or, somers can right the ship (if ip is as down as you seem to think they are), go on a tear through league play, and we’ll all look back at this game as a turning point. either way, don’t write of somers.
Yeah, way to early to say there is any “ship to right” for Somers. Both good teams and IP won–the first game of the season–that’s all at this point.
I don’t think anyone realized that Iona was missing some key parts when they scrimmaged yorktowon. They were missing Borsellino who is one of the top middies around they were also missing 3 starters on defense. The game may have been different if Iona was at full strenghth you never know.
