Twins Mike, left, and Greg Adams, at right, will be going their separate ways in college.
It all started back in the third grade.
That’s when neighbors of Mike and Greg Adams suggested the twin brothers take up lacrosse.
The next step was signing up for the youth program at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Fairfield, Conn.
Now seniors at Fairfield Warde High School, Mike and Greg Adams are both on the brink of college lacrosse careers.
Mike, an attackman/midfielder, will be playing at Union. Greg Adams, a defenseman, is headed for Franklin & Marshall. Their commitments were first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Mike is 6-foot-2, Greg is 6-foot-1. They both weigh 170 pounds and are both right-handed.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Mike and Greg on their commitments.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Mike: I wanted a school where I could find a competitive D-III program with high academics and a great college atmosphere. Ultimately, I could not have found a better place.
When I first met with (Union Head) Coach (Paul) Wehrum, he really stressed academics and the opportunities Union gives you after your four years. He listed jobs and internships he helped former players with and without a doubt, I knew that Union would be a great fit for me.
Coach Wehrum, (Union College Assistant) Coach (Derek) Witheford and all the players really welcomed me while I was on my overnight. I saw what Union lacrosse is all about and I wanted to be a part of it.
Greg: I wanted to find a school that has a great balance between academics and athletics as well as a school that has an intense internship program. Franklin & Marshall exhibits all those qualities.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Mike: I considered Middlebury, Babson, Trinity and Franklin & Marshall
Greg: I heavily considered Denison. I was also in contact with Washington and Lee, Union and Gettysburg.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Mike: I would say my strengths are my lacrosse IQ and game awareness. I like to describe myself as smooth. I think I have a great feel for the game and seem to make the right plays.
Greg: My strengths are my stick skills, picking up ground balls, and my awareness on the field. I would describe my style of play as smart. I am always aware of the situation and what I need to do every time I step on the field.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
Mike: I believe that I need to work on my strength. I think it could really help me excel on both offense and defense.
Greg: I always like to increase my strength and speed. Running and lifting are two great ways that will make me a more dynamic and versatile lacrosse player.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Mike: I have been playing since third grade. My neighbors were involved in the youth lacrosse program down at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Fairfield and they convinced my brother and I to sign up. I immediately fell in love with the game. In the past I played a lot of basketball.
Greg: I was introduced by a friend and former Princeton LSM, John Cunningham, and the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Fairfield. I have played basketball in the past.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
Mike: I play for the Sound Lacrosse Bucks, a summer program run out of Fairfield University. As for showcases/tournaments, I went to the Philly Showcase, Tri-State Tournament and National Invite 175.
Greg: This past summer, I played for Sound Lacrosse Bucks, a summer club team based out of Fairfield University.
I participated in the Philly Invitational Tournament last fall, and then National Invite 175 and Tri-State Invitational this past summer.
Any final thoughts?
Mike: I would like to thank my parents who helped me push through when times got tough. I also want to thank my club coaches, Coach (Andy) Whitley and Coach (Alex) Lopes, for helping me really develop as a player.
And finally, I want to thank Coach Wehrum and Coach Witheford for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Union lacrosse program.
Greg: I just want to thank (Franklin & Marshall Head) Coach (Todd) Cavallaro, (Assistant) Coach (Scott) Meehan and the rest of the F&M coaching staff for giving me an opportunity to be a part of the F&M lacrosse program.
I would also really like to thank my friends and family for supporting me during the recruiting process.
