Tomorrow is the first day of winter.
Which makes it the perfect time to take a look at the college choice of John Jay’s Malcolm Winter. As we reported last week, Winter, a left-handed defenseman, has decided on Goucher College in Baltimore.
Winter was added late last week in our “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown.”
If you checked there today, you learned Hen Hud defenseman AJ Small has decided on Nazareth.
Winter means that 11 — count ’em, 11 — John Jay seniors have committed to college teams, with four of those destinations being strong Division III programs, including three players headed to Gettysburg and two to Endicott. (Scroll down for the complete list of John Jay players.)
Now, here’s a Q&A with Malcolm on his commitment:
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Goucher?
The main factors to my decision were the coach, Coach (Kyle) Hannan is a great guy and put together a really great team. To win the conference really says something. Another factor would be the school, academically the possibilities in class options really grabbed my attention.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered RPI, Clark, Bard and Skidmore.
What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I think size will be my main factor to step up my game, to keep my speed up to adjust to such a high-paced game as a defensemen is certainly key.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths would have to be my stick skills and my ability to keep my head up on clears to create transition opportunities for the offense.
What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
Going to John Jay, I looked up to Matt Bocklet. He had one of the best stick skills on the field, offense or defense, and Ryder Bohlander who played with a high intensity. I do have to acknowledge my head coach through out middle school who really helped me transition into the best high school player i could be, as a defensemen himself Ed Pray who got me and put the team together. the whole senior class ready for high school lacrosse.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
I first realized I could play lacrosse at the college level when I played over the summer at top 205. I was a rising Junior but signed up as a rising Senior and I was able play toe to toe with any of them.
