Anthony Altimari never had the opportunity to meet Charlie Murphy.

But the junior at 2014 New York state champ and 2015 state semifinalist Yorktown knows the college path he is now on may not have been possible had it not been for the contributions Murphy made to the Yorktown program he co-founded in 1965 with Jim Turnbull.

So after verbally committing to Delaware earlier this week, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section, Murphy’s name was one the Class of 2017 faceoff specialist was sure to mention.

“None of this would have been possible without his love of the game and contribution to our program,” Altimari said.

An agile and athletic player, the 6-foot, 170-pound Altimari has quick hands and quick feet and is effective at igniting transition opportunities.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Anthony on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The location, size and campus setting all played a big role in deciding where to study and play.

I feel this was the best opportunity to play for a great program and receive an excellent education.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Manhattan College and UMass.

Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
Business/Finance.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel that my ability to control where I put the ball off the faceoff is one of my strengths.

As a faceoff specialist, my style of play depends on who my opponent is. If the person on the other side of the ball is beating me, then my style tends to be more defensive.

If I have the advantage and I am winning against my opponent then I tend to move forward with the ball and become more of an offensive player.  My style is to adjust on the fly.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I’m always working to improve all aspects of my game. If there is one thing that I can work on more, I would say it would be my one-on-one defense.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
When you grow up in Yorktown, it’s very difficult to avoid being exposed to the game of lacrosse.

Our town has a very long tradition of playing the game and producing great players.  A lot of my friends either had parents or older brothers who played here, those friends encouraged me to play the game.

That’s just what we do here in Yorktown. We play lacrosse.

I also played football and was a varsity wrestler.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Yorktown Ballers.  The most recent showcase that I participated in was the NXT Boys Philly Showcase.

I was selected to be on the Fab 40 All Star team, it was a great event my team won.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my family, coaches and all of my teammates.

I would also like to recognize Charlie Murphy for his contribution to Yorktown Lacrosse. Although I never had the opportunity to know him, none of this would have been possible without his love of the game and contribution to our program.
