It may be the dog days of August, but the recruiting commitments continue to come in from throughout the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region. You can learn about them as they’re made by checking out the “Updated recruiting review and commitment rundown” thread each day.
One of them was just made by a player who is busy preparing for the football season. Somers rising senior Anthony Lombardo, who is expected to be the Tuskers’ quarterback this fall, has finalized his collegiate future. He has accepted a scholarship offer from Binghamton.
Lombardo, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound midfielder who was a standout on the Hudson Valley Empire State Games team, becomes the second member of his family to commit to a Division I school. His older brother, Rob, an all-state standout for Somers, is a freshman on the football team at Navy after a spending this past year at U.S. Naval Academy Prep.
Here’s a Q&A with Rob on his commitment to Binghamton:
What were the main factors in your decision to attend Binghamton?
The academics Binghamton has to offer. Binghamton has a great business program and I plan on majoring in that. Also when I visited there, I knew it was a place I could see myself attending.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering UMass, Army and Siena. I visited all those schools.
What adjustments do you think you will need to make to play at the next level?
I need to improve my stick skills a lot. I also need to get stronger and faster.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strength as a player is my athleticism. I rely on my athleticism in lacrosse. I would describe my style of play as being a transition player.
What players have you looked up to as you have moved up through the varsity ranks?
I’ve looked up to my older brother, Robbie, JoJo Marasco and Greg Petre. My brother taught me what hard work and dedication can do for you. Day in and day out, JoJo did something amazing, and just from watching him, it helped me become better. Also, he and Greg would take me aside to give me tips on what I should do to become a better player. They also took me through shooting drills and taught me things there.
When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the D-I level?
After I made the all-star game of (Maverik) Showtime underclassman recruiting camp (last summer).

Well done Anthony! not only are you a terrific athlete but a wonderful citizen. One the younger kids from Somers and Westchester will look up to for a long time. Congratulations!!
Great choice Anthony. Binghamton is the equivalent of an Ivy League school these days! Good job!
Great group of players to learn from that you named Anthony. Your brother Rob – best football player in Somers history. JoJo – best laxer in Somers history. Greg Petre – best player on the team and one of the top 2 or 3 in the section this year. Good luck at Binghamton!
Joe,
You planning on taking a shot at pre, pre ’11 season rankings?
Yes, for sure, slacrosse.
Once the late summer/fall recruiting cycle ends, I’ll spend some time looking into that in more depth.
For now, I’m enjoying seeing what readers think about this topic in the current poll question.
Congrats Anthony. Well said Elephant Man!
Great fit Anthony – both academically and athletically. As was pointed out, Binghamton is one of the most selective colleges in the country admissions wise.
Congrats Ant.
Excellent decision Anthony – just like the ones you make on the field!
Smart kid.
Smart choice.
Congrats Anthony!
Anthony sounds like a prototypical student-athlete. Good luck at the next level!
Way to go Lombo…a WR guy and a great person all around.
…and you guys thought I was gone for the year…heh, heh.
This is a huge pick for Bingo Lax. They have always had strong defensive teams, but need to improve on the offensive side of the ball. Being from Vestal, NY (where Binghamton U is located) I would love to see them pick up more high level recruits like this kid. With the new facility they just built, he can’t go wrong.
I heard TJ Foley from Mahopac is going to commit to Stony Brook or Drexel…
Any thoughts?
I’ve seen him play; not sure if he can play at that level. That’s just my opinion though.
Congrats Ant! Keep up the good work in football too!!!
Do your thing vs Rye on Friday nite Big Ant!!!
My prediction for tomorrow … Somers 21, Rye 14
Nah!
28-14 Rye
Bring home a win vs. Rye tommorrow Ant!
Nah (even though lombardo is a great player).
Hey lets stick to lax. IMO rye beats Somers in the spring as well!
Do your thing vs Mahopac, Ant! One game away from Mahopac for the finals!
You mean Greely i assume
