Rye midfielder Jack O’Callaghan, one of the top juniors in the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, told me this morning that he has decided on a college after being recruited by many Division I programs.

“I have verbally committed to Coach (Jim) Nagle at Colgate and am looking forward to playing there with Kevin Gordon,” O’Callaghan said.

The agile and speedy O’Callaghan is coming off a breakout sophomore season in which he scored the winning goal in a 9-8 overtime win at Somers. His brother, Patrick, is a freshman midfielder at Middlebury.

Kevin Gordon, a former Rye standout, is a sophomore midfielder for the Red Raiders, which has become a hot spot for area players. Former Hen Hud two-time all-America mddie Rob Bosco is a junior midfielder. Former Ridgefield standout Matt Baker and Fordham Prep star Connor Brown are freshman middies.

The Red Raiders’ roster also includes six Long Island natives as well as sophomore attackman Jeff Ledwick of Weston, Conn.

In addition, Ward Melville senior midfielder Jimmy Ryan, former Horace Greeley standout Derek Katchis, now playing a post-grad season at the Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and Somers senior midfielder Erik Pfiffner have committed to Colgate.

Colgate is ranked 20th in the USILA coaches’ poll.

There is a definite connection between Rye and Section One and Colgate. Rye coach Brian Dooley played for Coach Nagle at Oneonta State.

Four juniors from East Islip have committed to D-I programs. Those are among the commitments Geoff Shannon runs down in his latest report at InsideLacrosse.com. Here’s the link:

Not very familiar with Rye lacrosse but a huge supporter of Coach Nagel and Colgate lax. Is this kid the real deal?

Yes. Only a Junior Jack is a 3 sport athlete (football, basketball) with tremendous athleticism, making him a great middie running the field, making plays and has terrific shooting ability from both sides. IMO I’d echo what Joe said above calling him one of the top Jr. middies in the region.

Colgate has lost to teams that aren’t exactly Division 1 powers either. I agree its suprising.
