Few high school players excel in the two key parts of the posssession game — groundballs and faceoffs — more than McCormack.

So perhaps it’s appropriate that McCormack’s college destination is Cornell, a college program that excelled in both areas en route to its appearance in this past season’s NCAA Division I championship game — a 10-9 overtime loss to Syracuse.

But before he arrives in Ithaca, McCormack has some unfinished business at Rye.

The Garnets’ saw their run of consecutive titles end at four when they fell to Putnam Valley 10-7 in last year’s Class C final at White Plains High School.

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
I’ve been going to the gym with my trainer Matt Tauber founder, of LIFT (Lifestyle Integrated Training Program). We’ve had open turf practices as well as the Brewster winter league.  It’s great that the players are staying active in the offseason, I know this will only help us.

How important is it for you to go out with another championship as a senior?
Last year, we didn’t win one so this year, that is our goal.  Our season came to a unexpected halt and I know this will motivate us.  This year our team has high expectations and we want to reach our goal.

How does your scrimmage schedule look and which ones are you looking forward to most?
The past few years we have been doing the round robin scrimmage at Briarcliff and this year we also scrimmage White Plains. We are playing a team from Maryland at the end of March and I am really looking forward to this game.

What players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
Everyone knows that we are a Junior heavy team.  We need some players under the radar to step it up this season.  We had a real strong JV team last year and we hope that their success will help us. Some players to look out for are Lucas Hasselmann, Max Bonsall, Jack O’Callaghan and Matt McReddie.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
Our strength this year is simple – we play together.  Two years ago, we had the talent and lost to Mount Sinai in the semifinals. Our team work and desire is our best attribute to help us win the big games. Rye’s success comes from our athleticism and being well coached, but this year we feel like we are more than just athletes, we feel like we are a lacrosse team.  We all love to play lacrosse, we all want a championship, and we all have bought in to the team.
