Both Johns Hopkins and Syracuse started the season tonight with impressive victories in games that marked the collegiate debuts of a pair of former two-time high school all-Americans from the Hudson Valley as well as a former Ridgefield star.

Yorktown’s John Ranagan (left), a freshman midfielder for Hopkins, had three ground balls and four shots on goal as Hopkins easily handled visiting Manhattan 14-3 at Homewood Field.

Somers’ JoJo Marasco had a goal and two assists for Syracuse in a 15-9 win over Denver at the Carrier Dome in a game that marked the head-coaching debit of new Denver coach Bill Tierney, the Princeton legend.

“Today was awesome,” Ranagan told me last night. “I won’t lie. I was pretty nervous going into the game, but a lot of my teammates just kept telling me ‘It’s another game, you have nothing to worry about.’

“Most of my nerves left once I stepped on the field. It was so exciting playing my first game on Homewood, the most historic field in college lacrosse.”

Marasco, meanwhile, split action between attack and midfield in a game played in front of 4,938 fans.

“It was amazing,” Marasco said. “I really felt comfortable. I was so pumped to get on the field and show everyone what I was able to do. It was a great feeling playing in front of so many fans and playing for Syracuse.”

Former John Jay star Chris Daniello, a senior attackman for Syracuse, had one goal and one assist. Another former John Jay all-American, Kevin Drew, also scored for Syracuse.

Cody Jamieson had a career-high four goals for top-ranked Syracuse.

Senior Steve Boyle had six goals and two assists for a career-high eight points for Hopkins against Manhattan.
