After being relieved of their duties as lacrosse coaches at John Jay on Dec. 15, Nick Savastano, his older brother Vinny Savastano and Erik Hoaglund were prepared to sit out at least one season.
“I don’t think our wives would have minded,” Nick Savastano told me yesterday.
But sometimes, opportunities come when you least expect them. Late last month, Savastano was approached by officials at John F. Kennedy Catholic in Somers about taking over their varsity program.
Now, less than a month later, the Savastanos are co-head coaches and Hoaglund is the varsity volunteer assistant.
Will this be the start of a new era of success for Kennedy’s upstart program? That’s the plan. In fact, the Savastanos have put together a new logo for the program (see above), the debut of which coincides with today’s official announcement.
The Savastanos replaces Andres Soltren as the Gaels’ varsity head coach. But it was Soltren who was the impetus for the move, coming up with the idea of asking Nick Savastano to take over as varsity coach with Soltren becoming JV head coach.
“He is like (Brian) Cashman for the Yankees,” Nick Savastano said of Soltren.
Can Nick Savastano, who led John Jay to national prominence in his 10-year tenure, lift a team that is coming off a 3-12 season to a berth in the sectional semifinals within five years while working alongside his brother? He thinks so. For starters, the Gaels are in the heart of the lacrosse hotbed of Northern Westchester, surrounded by such powerhouse programs as Yorktown, Somers, Mahopac, Lakeland/Panas and, yes, John Jay. But of that group, they are the only private school. There’s certainly no reason the Gaels can’t mirror the kind of rise enjoyed by downcounty Catholic school Iona Prep.
Here’s a Q & A I had with Nick Savastano yesterday.
What interested you about this job and why did you decide to take it?
The first thing, and we said it years ago, is that when it comes to lacrosse, Kennedy is a hidden gem. It’s smack dead center in Northern Westchester with all these great programs around it. The other thing we were pleasantly happy about was how nice the school is. The atmosphere inside the school is tremendous. It’s one of those things where we see there’s a future there.
When will you be meeting the players?
We met some of them when we visited the campus. We are going to have a meeting next Tuesday with all the kids. Then, we’ll start offseason workouts next Thursday. They’re tough, strong athletes. We haven’t seen anyone play lacrosse yet, but they’re nice, polite kids. What we’re looking for with this program right now is that they’re going to be the start of something special. They’re going to be the team that leads them into something special down the road.
The other thing is, they’re going to look the part. They are going to have nice gear, brand-new helmets, reversible jerseys and walk out on to the practice field wearing nice warmups. It will be like John Jay where other kids would say to players before practice, “Do you have a game today? You look real sharp.” They will look like they play for a Division I (college) program. We’re going to look the part.
Do you think the fact that you don’t have a big youth feeder program like you did at John Jay will be an issue?
I don’t think so. As we get better and as we start to compete the word’s going to get out that this could be the next St. Anthony’s or Chaminade. It’s only $6,500 a year to go to school there. Since we’re in Section 1, we play by Section 1 rules. We don’t give scholarships, but kids are going to want to play here.
How about the fact you no longer have the benefit of a turf field?
That’s the one drawback right now. We have been told we can use the Brewster Sports Center, and we may be able to have a few practices at Somers (High School). We’re also working to see if maybe we can schedule a night game at Somers.
What are some other things you like about Kennedy Catholic?
The old-school discipline. Kids have to wear uniforms. I was very surprised about the discipline. A lot of the same values we taught at John Jay, they teach over there and the kids buy right into.
When we walked in there, we were so welcomed. It was almost overwhelming.
The more, me, Erik and Vinny talk about this, the juices get flowing. The opportunity for these kids is there. We’re going to tell the kids Tuesday, we’re not going to promise you wins right away, but if you work hard, they will come.
They’ve had a great deal of success in basketball and baseball. The football team just went 6-2 and they’re very fired up about that. There are some good athletes from that team.
The other great thing about it is we’re in Class C. I don’t think it’s a 10-year project. It could be a three- or four year project.
I do think in three or four years, if everything goes as we plan, I think we can be contending in a final four type of situation, especially with Rye going up to B next year.
Do you think you will draw players from surrounding districts?
Varsity players have to sit out a year if they transfer. Eighth-graders can go in and play right away when they become freshmen, so I think there could be some younger players who come over.
What are your thoughts on working with Vin and Erik in a new venue?
Vin and Erik and I are all phys-ed teachers. I think it’s important to have educators coaching kids and with Vin running the defense, he will keep us in every game. Erik has a great mind for the game and is a hungry coach.
How many schools did you receive job offers from?
We had four or five other offers we turned down. (Two offers were for Nick Savastano to serve as head coach, the others were for Savastano to serve as an assistant.) We were very willing to sit out a year. I don’t think our wives would have minded us taking a year off. But I thought, if the right opportunity comes and it’s close to my house (in South Salem), I had to consider it. For a lot of reasons, this one seemed logical.
What does your schedule look like for next year and do you have any games that need to be added to the schedule?
We are going to add three games.
Hen Hud, North Salem, Put Valley, Peekskill, Croton-Harmon, Ossining and Haldane are in our league. The second game (against each team) counts as the league game.
We have Arlington as one crossover and need to add three more.
I have to ask. In a few years, are you going to try to schedule a crossover against John Jay?
Who knows? That would be a big media event. That’s for sure.

So now after reading it here first last week that this was going to happen, it happens. This could have a ripple effect for Section One lax. Best of luck to the Savs. They’ll need it – atleast at first.
Meanwhile did anyone go to the K/L board meeting tonight? Any conversation about Savs in the public Q&A???
January 14th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
We obviously all knew this was going to happen like you said Jaybird so I’m not surprised. But at the same time I am surprised. Sounds weird I know. But really that’s how I feel. Thanks to this excellent interview and Joe’s analysis I have a clear understanding of Sav’s thought process. It will be interesting to see what happens in the years to come. I think we can all agree it will be tough for them to even get to .500 this year.

Congrats and good luck to the Savs/Hoag and to JFK for this huge upgrade to their program.

Best of luck to the Savs.
I think it’s been diluted over the years, but back in the 80’s, Kennedy-John Jay were big rivals, a lot of the St. Mary’s kids from Katonah went to Kennedy (it was JFK back then), so it was personal. I remember them renting lights for a football game in 1981, big turnout.
I know some people disagree, but I think that this is a great opportunity for the reasons he mentioned. Very central to Jay, Town, Somers, Pac, Fox Lane, L/P, and given it’s success with Basketball, I see no reason why they can’t duplicate this with lax. And I for one would love to see a Jay-Kennedy game in the future, more for the nostalgia than any Savs vs. Jay angle.

No money can be given out to players at JFK. They play by section 1 rules as I understand which would also mean that no recruiting is possible as well, correct? So something as innocent as saying to a kid at a camp “hey, you would really love JFK and we would love to have you” is off limits. If that doesn’t happen, how do the Sav’s expect to fill their roster with talent? Sad to say, rightfully so or not, their reputation has been tarnished and parents are not going to spend an extra 7g’s a year to send their children off to JFK when they are paying the taxes in L/P or Town where they can be coached equally well and be given the same opportunities to pursue post HS opportunities (particularly in these economic times).
To my main point. Class C is tougher than people are giving it credit for. JFK will not be able to compete with the likes of Put Valley, Byram and B’Ville in three years. Nor for that matter will they be at the same level as Pleasantville, Pelham or Nanuet. All have thriving youth programs and are starting to send players off to DI and DIII programs to play ball. Looking down on Class C is easy when you’re in a higher class; it’s a different story when you’re playing on a level playing field. Here are the Class C team records against Class A and B teams, within the power league, last season alone.
Put Valley- 7-4
B’Ville – 6-4
Rye- 5-4
Byram – 4-5
Three out of the four C schools in the power league had a winning record against larger schools within the power league in 2009 (the best that A and B had to offer), you can’t argue with those numbers (JJ was 8-6 against A and B section 1 power league teams last season by comparison, and with a minimum of 300 more students to pool from, 150 boys if you cut that in half, than the largest of the C schools, Rye, and over 600 more to chose from than the smallest in that group, Bville). It seems to me, that by comparison, the coaches in C are getting more out of their kids than the coaches in A and B, as overall classes. Is the strongest team in Class A better than the strongest team in Class C, sure, and they should be, Class A schools have double, often triple the number of students to pool from, they should be better. But to say that Class C is weak is just not true.
JFK is going to have a real hard time keeping up as these teams continue to improve, as JFK is essentially starting from scratch and has no feeder program. I am prepared to eat my words, but I just don’t see it happening. I will say that their schedule this year is conducive to having a winning season, particularly since I think the three extra games they will pick up will also be games that they have an opportunity to win, so that they can point to their record as a measure of success and as a draw to new prospective players, as they should.
With the Sav’s coaching, they should win every game but 6 (lets say they split with N. Salem) on their current schedule, which gives them 10 wins to hang their hats on. 3-9 to 10-6 is a great turn around, but they will have a long way to go before they can realistically compete in Class C.

Uh oh….now the Savs can recruit. The powers that be better start hiding their youth. I can’t wait to see what happens. St. Anthony’s of westchester, I’m coining that term right now…1/15/09.

Rebel

I am happy for the kids at Kennedy. Kids and parents struggle between a good RC education and the number of programs offered by the public schools. I think kids will have an easier time saying yes to Kennedy now. As far as the feeder program – is there a JV team at Kennedy? The youth programs from with in our Section will continue to send up some skilled kids – Kenney is not St. Anthonys of Chaminade simply because of population but I am sure that the program will grow and do well in the future. Best to all involved.
Any feed back for those of us who did not attend the BOE meeting. Although its a mute point, I would still like to know how the meeting went. Thanks.
January 15th, 2010 at 1:06 pm
Can they recruit? Playing by section 1 rules, which Sav stated above in his interview, does not include recruiting.
January 15th, 2010 at 2:09 pm
No – it’s called ‘attracting students athletes’. Different then recruiting because they can’t offer or promise anything!
January 15th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Kennedy will not bring in the talent from towns around them…why leave ytown, jj L/P mahopac and somers. Besides JJ as of right now all have great coaches and do just a fine job helping kids not just starters bur reserve players into college. The facilities at Kennedy (lax field) is probably at the bottom of the barrel for athletic facilities. There grass field is soo torn up and not kept right that they are not allowed to practice on it during the lax season if they want to play games on it. Plus the field does not have a drainage system. One good rain storm and its done for days if not weeks at a time. There prax facility if you call that is a half field of grass between a parking lot and road that is not even level. Yeah right the baseball team will give up there area for the lax program. And as far as recruiting goes GOOD LUCK…NO SCHOLARSHIPS there results in No decent players leaving there programs to go there. Un like st. anthonys and chaminde that can give out finical aid. Kennedy also follows section 1 rules and not even the catholic rules..why you ask so they dont have to keep up with the standards of facilities of catholic leagues and there rules which would raise the price of kennedy ($6700). And for all you people out there that think they will play JJ that will never happen esp not in the next 5-8 years. JJ would smoke them and complete embarrass Sav on the field with a score of 25-2. Sav would never want to play them. This is a 1 year thing b/c sav will realize that he cant bring this program to what he did with JJ. There is no true feeder program for Kennedy which in returns means your struggling to get players. Hey cant wait to see which top sec 1 coach has a fallen out with the AD and some how find themselves out of job as Sav and his crew slides right in for 2011 season!!!
January 15th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
In Catholic school programs….. it is not recruiting, … its known as giving the students/players scholarships. Best of luck Nick!!!
January 15th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Kear was unable to bring Kennedy into the sectional semis so why should Sav be able to?
January 15th, 2010 at 4:42 pm
because the savs will put the time in. Kear was leaving practice every other day to watch his kids play college lax. I dont think the savs will give these boys a day off. LOL
January 15th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
They won’t have to recruit, kids will come to play for them. A few here and there and it will work itself out. It will take more than a few years to get the level up to play against some of those other class C schools. 7K isn’t that much to give a middle of the road player a shot to go to school for lax.
Good luck! JJ’s loss!
January 15th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
Good luck to the Sav’s! They built JJ and will work hard to give the Kennedy kids the same opportunities in the future. If they build it THEY will come!
January 15th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Add my good wishes and best of luck to the new coaches at Kennedy Catholic.
A few random thoughts:
– I doubt the $6,500 or so is much of an issue for most families in the Northern Westchester area that Kennedy draws from, especially those with kids in travel lacrosse programs. (That’s more of an issue for Putnam families). I also doubt that Kennedy’s scholarship fund is sufficient to be handing out full tuition to students and families simply because they play lacrosse at an elite level, perhaps a few might qualify for some partial, need-based (finanical need, not talent need) scholarships in the $500 – $1,000 range. So I wouldn’t be too concerned that Kennedy is going to steal good players by throwing cash around.
– What’s more, it’s no given that there’s lot of talent out there to entice. The John Jay 9th grade team that my son’s team played last season was uncompetitive, to say the least. So I think they will go with who shows up for off-season workouts and puts in the time, certainly this season.
– If I were a Kennedy parent, I’d want to know from the coaches and athletic director the entire story of what happened at John Jay that led to the dismissal there. We’re all big boys and can handle the truth, so I’d like to hear it, not have someone say, “don’t worry about it” or “it’s none of your business, we’re moving on”. Then I’d be able to decide whether the program would be something I’d want my son involved with, simple as that. That’s called being honest, and I’d assume the people who run the school abide by that, er, religiously.
– And lastly, to Rebel…Buddy, it’s 1/15/2010 now. Lay off the caffiene and realize that the goal is to have St. Anthony be considered the “Kennedy of Smithtown, LI”. That’s a goal well worth achieving.
Best of luck to all.

Maybe you should do an interview with Coach Nolan. Let’s see what he thinks of the job The Savastano’s did. Let’s see: 6 straight trips to the Sectional Championship – Winning 4 in a row, beating the #1 team in the Nation, getting countless numbers of kids Scholarships, having more than a dozen kids get All-American and making high school students become great young men – not too shabby of a resume. Tell us Nolan what you really think – please! We want to know.
Good Luck to the sav’s!
January 16th, 2010 at 8:23 am
Interesting interview but now let’s focus on who the coach of John Jay will be be.
January 16th, 2010 at 8:40 am
Nolan with Matt Bocklet as assistant probably. Schurr or Dalton have outside shots. What does everyone think?
Tommy – until Nolan gets named coach who is gonna interview him other than the AD? I mean this isn’t the Hopkins vacancy we’re talking about. Get a grip man.
January 16th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Hey lax novice
$7000 a year is a big deal for most families in upper westchester. espcially if there is more then 1 child. Also JFK DOES NOT GIVE out scholorships. They have no funds or fincial aid packages.
January 16th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
I don’t doubt an extra $7,000 out of pocket doesn’t pinch the average family, but the people we are speaking of who spend half that amount on summer lacrosse teams and camps and travel every year alone aren’t going to be put off if they decide that the new coaches at Kennedy are worth the investment.
I’m very surprised to hear that there are NO scholarship funds at Kennedy Catholic. Given what I’m reading about the state of the fields there and what those might cost to repair and/or improve, that seems to be a considerably underfunded school if that’s the case. Don’t they have 2nd collections once month at Mass for the benefit of the Catholic schools there?
Oh, and if you’re so creatively-challenged that you can’t think of your own nickname, then steal one from somebody who is at least an acknowledged expert in these topics. You’ll sound smarter.

What would be a bigger slap in the face to the school board, if next season Daniello and the other stars transfer to Kennedy like Zach Greer did for Coach Pressley
January 17th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
That can’t happen. If you transfer to JFK after your 9th grade year you have to sit out a year. You can transfer as an 8th grader and play immediately as a 9th grader tho.
January 17th, 2010 at 11:24 pm
I don’t think hop and Petramala would be to thrilled about daniello moving to 3-12 Kennedy anyways.
January 19th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
As I have stated in previous posts. Good luck to the Savs. Kennedy facilities are not good. One gym shared by all. Weight room in the boys looker room etc. Main Lax field a clay mess after a rain. All fixable with time & $$. Baseball at Kennedy has done very well so there is a precident. That said many of these other section 1 teams (Like the 11th grade JJers) have been playing together since 3rd grade and know each other and communicate well on the field. Even if Kennedy draws some section 1 talent (mainly because they want a RC education and don’t want to commute down county) they cohesiveness will be a challange (one I think Sav actually looks forward to) Will they get better definitley, will they challange Put Valley in the next 3-5 years very doubtful. He may stay a while as the commute is good and he has littleones and can be home relatively quickly and quality of life matters.
I hope the Savs get a great turnout of boys at their first meeting this afternoon. It is a much smaller school than JJ, they will need as many bodies as possible.
Once again good luck to the Savs and KC (JFK)
January 19th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Not to mention that Greer had graduated from Duke already, but chose to use the extra year of eligibility at Bryant while pursuing a graduate degree.
January 19th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I heard they had 47 kids at the meeting at kennedy today. mostly it was kid for the varsity.
January 19th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Great news for the Sav Bros and Coach Hoaglund, I think Coach Soltren should be given major credit for his unselfish move down to the JV, in my opinion that’s a class act coach, never met him but that really makes me think the values at that school are not like that at a Public school.
This question is for Joe or anyone else who would not mind to ask, back in the late 80’s and 90’s many local kids elected the Community College Route, Most of Herkimers players were all section / all americans from section 1, some went to school at Nassau CC and Farmindale College, why has anyone ever tried to get a team going at Westchester Community College…why lose these kids to upstate and down state teams when we have a diamond in the rough right in our backyards. I was thinking what a nice transaction this would have been if the Savs could take over WCC and make it a powerhouse. When I went to Herkimer, there were no HS teams in the whole county…were in a hotbed of lacrosse, this may be an option for some student athletes in the area…just curious why this was never explored further.
January 20th, 2010 at 7:24 am
Ta-Da:
Great Question, I know years ago F Vitolo looked into the WCC team , it was right after the football team folded so, the thought there was they would have the money to start up a decent program The Administration would not make it a full time position so that was that.
A few years after that Lew Janavey, Tom Ryan and a few Vounteer coaches started a club team with the hopes of it picking up and going JCAA. However WCC refused to make any effort in assisting the process ( Uniforms, travel, facilities were not even considerd by the AD ) They actually had drawn interest of some very good local players that would have made a good team to compete with Herk, Essex etc. Since it did not pan out I believe most of those players in turn went to Pace to play for Vitolo and the rest is history.
Maybe Mercy College will do the right thing for Hud Valley players. Seems like they are off to a good start.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
Kennedy needs all the help they can get. 4 lax teams share a single field that is always rained out, the baseball field will soon have a church on top of it despite all the money they raised to build it, and the parking lot is not the same as a turf field. This is great for all lax players however. Catholic schools give all money and attention to football, basketball, and baseball. Savs will find it difficult at first. If they stick to it the boys will follow. Kennedy won’t pull from jj, ytown, somers, l/p, or any large section one schools. They’ll get some ossinging, yonkers, dover kids. From schools with a not so great program who have kids with potential.
Either way it the Savs can only help. And Soltren is a true hero to Kennedy. He was the one who suggested the call to Savs. He only picked up the game recently but he picked it up quick.
January 20th, 2010 at 10:22 pm
Soltren sounds like a real class guy.

The number of players who ever played at JJ receiving scholarship money for lacrosse is miniscule. Some may have played lax and gotten money for acaemics but only a handful got actual partial scholarships even.
January 29th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
Fact Check,
What’s more important and I think needs to be mentioned, is that high school coaches do not “get scholarships” for their players. Some have criticized certain coaches for not “doing enough for their players” in regards to scholastic sports after college. This is absurd. Coaches don’t broker kids and get them into schools. Kids do that. Kids go to showcases, camps, play on the empire team, write letters, visit campuses and most notably, excel in their sport. College coaches recruit. They know who they want and for what reason. Are there connections from HS program to college program? Yes. This is due to the overall success of a program and the representatives from that program that have gone to play at a certain school.
You can’t blame a HS coach for not getting you into Johns Hopkins or credit them for that matter if you do get in. You can say “They have gotten so good that now they have kids going to Hopkins” and HS coaches are only responsible in that way.
To me, it sounds like another helicopter parenting issue when HS coaches are called out because they did not do enough to get their kid into top notch schools. What are they supposed to do? Run an SAT prep camp that mirrors their lax one? Cold call Ivy League, Independent and Big East schools and pitch their kids’ abilities? Guidance counselors get tenure and fair salaries let them do their job. Coaches need to try and win the game.

The only problem i see with this is that this coaching staff might be at JFK for all of 2 years, depending on how long it takes for one of the A league teams to fire their coach. JFK might be a nice school and all, but the program is awful, and isn’t going far in the near future. I can honestly see them winning maybe 3 games this season, and maybe 4 or 5 next season and that’s it.
They aren’t going to do much recruiting with the school being so expensive, and times being so tough. Plus the school isn’t exactly the best.
And when it comes down to it, the students at JFK just aren’t as athletic as the public school kids. The kids at JFK are for the most part coming out of private schools where athletics is one of the lowest priorities, which isn’t much help to Sav. You also have to take into consideration that baseball is JFK’s sport and thats where the athletes go in the spring… not lacrosse.
The last thing is, the JFK players dont put in the same effort into getting better on the off season, that the other schools do. They dont sign up for winter leagues, they sure dont play tournament ball. It shows in games how little wall ball they play, and all of this takes a toll on the team. While big name school are out playing wall ball, or in the gym getting ready for the spring, JFK is probably playing video games or eating or something… Just sayin
I can see JFK become a solid program in 5 or 6 years if the Sav’s stay, but i doubt they will. I think they’re going to stay for maybe 2 years at most, and go to a better school where they can win 12 or 13 games in a season in stead of 3.
January 30th, 2010 at 9:22 am
laxer bro that is why you need good coaches so it gets them excited to do wall ball go to camps etc. The savs will be just fine. I see them going 500 this season and making the playoffs where no one will want to play them in may
February 4th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
It will be interesting to see what happens here. Some scenarios:
1. Savs lead JFK to one or more .500 seasons and then bolt for a program like Mahopac, LP or Somers (one or more is bound to have a vacancy the next couple years)
2. Kennedy continues to flounder…Savs improve W-L record by 2-3 wins a season but that’s it
3. Kennedy becomes the St. Anthony’s of Northern Westchester
4. Somewhere in between #3 and #4
I think #4 seems most likely

It won’t be long before the new era of JFK Lax officially starts.
