St. Anthony’s vs. Chaminade.

You don’t have to say much more than that.

The longtime CHSAA powerhouses will be renewing their rivalry today at 4:15 p.m. at Chaminade. St. Anthony’s is No. 2 in the LaxLessons.com regional rankings. Chaminade is No. 7.

Last season, Chaminade pulled out a 7-6 regular-season win over the Flyers, who came back in a big way in the CHSAA final, winning 12-11.

This year’s game will, as always, feature an impressive assemblage of talent on display. The Friars have eight Division I-bound players, including midfielder Thomas Schreiber, the No. 5-ranked junior in the nation, according to Inside Lacrosse. I’m told he’s likely to attend Princeton.

Also headed to Princeton is midfielder Robert Lucas of Chaminade. Teammate John Urbank, a defenseman, is one another one of the top juniors in the country. He’s committed to Georgetown.

St. Anthony’s has a pair of players headed to UMass — lefty attackman Will Manny (perhaps the Friars’ most dangerous offensive player) and midfielder Ryan Fumai.

Defensive Michael Keane is bound for Towson and junior Brendan Schroeder, an attackman/midfielder, is headed to Navy.

Should be a great one.

• Also today out in Suffolk, Smithtown East, which opened the season with an 8-5 win at Huntington, visits Comsewogue at 4:30 p.m. It’s the Warriors’ season opener.

Meanwhile, in Westchester, there are plenty of marquee matchups (all of which are set for 4:30 p.m.):

• Yorktown visits Rye in a matchup of the two-time defending Section 1 Class A champion ‘Huskers vs. the four-time Class C sectional champion Garnets, who are coached by former Yorktown players Brian and Scott Dooley.

• John Jay travels to Brewster in a matchup of the teams that met last year in the Class B sectional final, which John Jay won easily. John Jay lost three all-Americans from last season. Brewster opened the season on Tuesday with as surprising loss at Clarkstown South.

• Lew Janavey, a fixture in Section 1 lax as an assistant at several programs (most notably Lakeland/Panas), makes his varsity head-coaching debut as Somers visits Mahopac. The Indians opened the season with a win over Fordham Prep.

  1. Old Rugger says:

    I’m thinking St A’s 12 ‘Nade 8

  2. John says:

Last years final was won by Chaminade in overtime.

  3. BigBadBear says:

    Y’town 14 Rye 7
    Jay 9 Brewster 5
    ‘Pac 11 Somers 8

  4. BigBadBear says:

if ‘Pac Somers is close at the end, all bets wil be off…they will give it to Jo Jo, and he will do his magic…also, FYI, laxpower had a feature on “Players to watch in the Northeast” which had a nice paragraph on Jo Jo, Greeley and White among others

  5. teamlax says:

As long as Jay rallies together as a team when that bell rings at 2:40, they will win by at least 5.

  6. Joe Lombardi says:

    Old Rugger –

That sounds about right. I will go with St. A’s 11-8.

    Bear –

May not be that easy for Joe Marasco in the situation you described. Joe Corace is back on the Mahopac staff as D coordinator. BTW – if you that link for Northeast players to watch from laxpower, please post it. I couldn’t find it on the site.

Stay tuned, gang. We’ll be having score updates on this thread from action throughout the region.

Northeast Players to Watch link: http://www.laxpower.com/laxnews/news.php?story=13890

(On homepage of laxpower go to High School tab for news stories)

  8. Joe Lombardi says:

    Thanks for the link, Laxolution.

In addition to Joe Marasco, they also include Ridgefield’s Matt White, South Side’s Nick O’Reilly, Rocky Point’s Matt Palasek, Fordham Prep’s Chris Moffa and Kieran McDonald. McDonald, who lives in Rye, attends Westminster. Though it’s outside Fairfield, I included him in “Fairfield players to watch” nevertheless. Here’s that link:
    http://laxlessons.com/blog/2009/03/preseason-players-to-watch-fairfield/

BTW – Ric B. – John Greeley is there as well.

  9. ReL45 says:

Speaking of laxpower looks like Joe’s video interview with Marasco has the Syracuse posters buzzing. They liked it and all but didn’t know about his nickname …

  10. syracuse says:

    I’m on record:

    St. Anthony’s 11, Chaminade 6
    Yorktown 12, Rye 5
    Somers 10, Mahopac 8
    John Jay 8, Brewster 2

Somers-‘Pac is THE game of the day in Section I.

  11. slacrosse says:

    Hear Town/Rye at 4PM, not 4:30

  12. BigBadBear says:

    jo jo just too much

  13. LAX says:

Nice job Somers, I imagined them to win by 2-3 goals. Yes jo jo is too much but people need to realize that they have many other good players besides jo jo!

  14. LAX says:

    Anymore updates on JJ-Brewster?

  15. LAX says:

Nice job Yorktown 9-2, Kevin with 5 goals.

  16. Sect1Lax says:

Great job on the updates. Nice win for somers.

  17. LAX says:

Thanks for the updates guys. A little surprising when Brewster was winning 4-2, but JJ is a team that always steps up in the second half, maybe because of their depth?

  18. Old Timer says:

Even if they do wear Brewster out in the second half, allowing 4 goals in a half to a team that only scored 3 in an entire game against South can’t be how they wanted to start things off.

  19. LAX says:

Any stats from the game? How’d JJ’s first-year goalie do? He’ll need to do well if JJ wants to win class B this year as Somers is looking tough.

  20. syracuse says:

OK, surpising outcome on Long Island unfolding … check body of this post and please come back tonight for more area scores. Thanks. — ‘CUSE

  21. syracuse says:

OK, several more scores have been posted, including St. Anthony’s-Chaminade final and Port Washington-Syosset final in body copy above.

  22. MurphsFirePlace says:

Rye’s Keough how a tough day keeping track of junior Yorktown star Kevin Interlicchio as he recorded 5 goals in todays impressive win vs Rye. Interlicchio was extremely impressive again today while going up a very talented defenseman. 11 goals in the last two games is not such a bad start for the stud.

John Ranagan has to be the most feared all around player in Section One. The kid throws his body around like its his job and when he wants to get to the goal his simply puts his shoulder down. When he wants a groundball or wants to get to the goal, he’s simply just gonna do it…
Tom Casey has also had a very stellar year thus far as he has been an excellent finisher and bull dodger

Great job Town, now get ready for a brawl, ON YOUR FIELD!

  23. LAX says:

“For the Jay v Brewster game, Jay was down 4-2 early then 4-4 at half. Finally they got it going and looked much better and ended up winning 11-6.
    Goals: Daniello 5, forrest walter 2, Stewart 1, J Weil 1, J Morris 1, and Silver 1

9 of the 11 goals were scored by sophomores for Jay so very impressive. Their D looked good throughout. Brewster has a solid defense and goalie. Their offense looked good at times.” – description of the game from “freelaxer”

So another 5-goal performance today from Daniello, Looks like this trend of the sophomores dominating games is continuing into the regular season for JJ. Who says these kids can’t compete on the varsity level?

  24. woooow says:

Chaminade upsetting the Friars!!?? I bet the Huskers are licking their lips for this one on Saturday…After getting off to two great games, Yorktowns looks ready to take on anybody…

Hopkins duo Ranagan and Interlicchio have looked better than ever
Defense has been playing like a wall
Tom Casey has stepped up big time so far for his senior campaign

Gonna be a good one Saturday!!!!

  25. syracuse says:

Maybe the second half will be a nice springboard for Jay going forward. All they need is a little confidence. They may not have the talent of past years, but what they do have CAN be competitive with even the best teams on their schedule.

You can come in off the ledge now a little …

  26. Town says:

Do we have a final official score on the Chaminade St. A’s game?

  27. LAX says:

5 goals 2 assists for the sophomore, pretty exceptional game.

  28. syracuse says:

What we need are people from the St. Anthony’s-Chaminade game to come forward and give us the dirt on this “upset.”

  29. LAX says:

From the JJ scrimmage, Chaminade looked great, very intimidating on defense and JJ had a lot of trouble clearing it against them. But still wasn’t expecting them to beat a stacked St. Anthony’s team.

  30. Town says:

never mind i see it, thankyou

  31. Town says:

    Syracuse,

can there really be upsets in a rivalry ?

  32. […] Today’s Top 5/Score updates Apr 02  Email This […]

  33. syracuse says:

Hence why “upset” is in quotes my friend …

  34. Town says:

    touché

  35. Joe Lombardi says:

Just talked to Hopkins-bound junior Kevin Interlicchio of Yorktown, who had five goals today vs. Rye.

Though he’s been on a scoring spree in Yorktown’s first two games, he had high praise for the ‘Husker defense which really limited the amount of shots on Michael Bonitatibus.

I asked him if he thought St. Anthony’s losing to Chaminade today might help or hurt the ‘Huskers, and he provided some historical perspective, pointing out that St. Anthony’s fell to Chaminade last season in its game before losing to Yorktown.

  36. Harriet Tubs says:

Defense was the story for the Huskers, which probably doesn’t receive the credit it has so far earned. Orchestrated by 4-year starter, Michael Bonitatibus, Yorktown’s defense is top notch. Their defense did an awesome job of limiting shots on Bonitatibus, and no matter how hard the opponent is, Yorktown’s defense will always keep them in it.

Interlicchio, Ranagan, and Casey seemed to be too much for Donald Keough’s Garnet defense, and the well coached Garnets just seemed to lack depth to attack Yorktown’s suffocation defense, and just in the end didn’t have enough players to create.

Offense wins games, and defense wins championships, a strong win puts Yorktown in good standing for their marquee matchup vs. perennial powerhouse in St. Anthony’s on Saturday. The Yorktown coaches will be sure to keep their players in the right state because St. Anthony’s will be looking to come out firing with their 8 Division 1 bound players on board after their tough loss for arch rival Chaminade.

Looks to be an intense Friday practice in Husker Land as the best of the Hudson Valley takes on the best of the Island.

  37. syracuse says:

I think Saturday’s game can set the tone for Yorktown for the entire season. Last year they won by 4 or 5 at St. Anthony’s, which surprised a lot of people. This year’s Yorktown team is more balanced.

I think Town wins this game and leaves little doubt along the way.

A quick shout out to Rye. The Garnets are still the best team in Class C in the section. Believe it or not, 9-2 against this Yorktown team is respectable.

As for Somers, the LoHud webcast was distant and bouncing all over the place. I think Somers has some players not named Marasco. They move the ball well.

  38. syracuse says:

More scores added to the body of this post …

  39. LIGuy says:

Chaminade-St. As was pretty even at the half but in the third quarter Chaminade was just a different team. They reeled off four straight goals and were in control from then on out.

  40. Lacrossegeek says:

Cuse, I agree with you. Rye playing a real good Yorktown team its first game was not easy. I think this team will get better as the season progresses and will still be standing at the end. Congrats to Y-Town on the win. They look real strong and will only get stronger.

  41. White Wedding says:

Any score for the Rebels vs. Pirates?

  42. ryeguy says:

Who scored for Rye. How about faceoffs?

  43. slacrosse says:

A not surprising great game for Town with their O and D playing super. On top of this guys like Casey and others also came to the party in a big way to add to the firepower of JR and KI.

Score wise Rye kept it close for a quarter or so but then Town’s skills and power were just too much and as well, as Rye starting to get sloppy on D and transition given Towns relentless pressure.

A tough opponent for a 1st game but hopefully one that Rye can emulate in terms of improving all aspects of their game which they definitely will do. I think a good sign for the future is Tim Jones, the goalie who played very well despite the score. To Town’s credit most of their goals were shot from right in front of the goal after great dodges or feeds and it would have been tough for any goalie to stop this onslaught. McCormack continued to be very productive at FO giving Rye good possession (as well as scoring a goal + an almost goal but for a great save by Mikey B).

It was great the way the Town and Rye players who know each other got together after the game, congratulating and commiserating with each other–the way high school sport should be.

The Rye kids have a lot of pride, are used to winning, and have coaches that will get the best from them.

Last season they started off losing 7-1 to Wantaugh and finished out very strong. They will continue improving, finding the best way to get productive on offense and be among the most competitive teams in Section 1.

Go Garnets and Go Town–take it to St A’s on Sat.

  44. Doid23 says:

Syracuse, I’m not coming off the ledge until the Manhasset game, that one scares me….

  45. slacrosse says:

    ryeguy,

To answer your question,McCormack and Davis were the scorers for Rye with McCormack controlling the face-offs.

  46. syracuse says:

Manhasset should scare you, but have faith Vinny Sav creates a D to hold ‘Sett down and that your offense plays four quarters instead of two.

Look, no one said this season was going to be easy for Jay. A 10-6 or 9-7 regular season is a very real possibility. How they react against a Manhasset will speak volumes about their character and temperament.

    Try to enjoy the game.

  47. Felax says:

It was awesome watching Towns talent unfold at Rye yesterday.
Offense has been captured in the comments above.

“Town D” = Bonitatibus, Brunelle, Cabrielle, Fennessy, Fox.

    Hoorah!

  48. just a fan says:

You think the Yorktown game will draw othet area LI and HV teams that want to get a look at these two? Should be a great high school battle.

  49. Joe Lombardi says:

    Just a fan –

It definitely should. And fans who come up can grab a bite to eat after the game then head over to John Jay for the 7 p.m. game vs. Manhasset.

There may be fewer who take advantage of the opportunity than usual because of the Big City Classic college lax tripleheader scheduled for tomorrow at Giants Stadium. I’m told more than 17,000 tickets have already been sold for that.

  50. Lacrossegeek says:

Very classy of Rye to have moment of silience for Brian Crockett

  51. Doid23 says:

Can’t enjoy the ‘Set-Jay game, live in Texas now so I’m counting on you guys for Town-St.A’s and Jay-Set updates. Love the site so far fellas

  52. Parent says:

Joe–behind the third base dugout at the baseball field is the best spot for cell service.
