The Somers Tuskers are off to a strong 2-1 start with their lone loss to Yorktown 11-6.
The ‘Huskers, of course, are seventh in the latest Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse national rankings and No. 3 in the latest LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings.
Now, Somers, which is unranked national and No. 19 in the LaxLessons.com rankings, will face the 17th-ranked team in the nation, Cold Spring Harbor, which checks in at No. 10 in the LaxLessons.com rankings.
It’s one of several huge regional showdowns on a day that includes “The Battle of the Sound” at Darien. You can read more about the Manhasset-Darien and Garden City-New Canaan games here.
In Nassau, Chaminade, No. 9 in the Under Armour/IL poll, hosts No. 2 West Islip at 12:30 p.m. West Islip is No. 1 in the LaxLessons.com regional rankings.
As for Somers-Cold Spring Harbor, this is potentially a statement game for the Tuskers. Though they won four straight sectional titles from 2000-03 and have registered three wins over Yorktown since 2003, Somers has not had many big wins against powerhouse teams outside Section 1 in its history. The last one that comes to mind is its overtime victory over Manhasset in the 2003 state semifinals.
CSH suffered a somewhat surprising one-goal loss to Summit (N.J.) earlier this week.
Like Somers, the Seahawks are an athletic team that is known for hard-nosed play and hustling after ground balls.
CSH is a midfield-oriented team, led by Christian Kennedy, one of the state’s top juniors. Kennedy has committed to Cornell.
Game-time is 3 p.m. at Somers.
There are plenty more games of note today. John Jay and Corning East renew their rivalry at noon at Corning East. Shoreham-Wading River faces a big test against Mountain Lakes.
And in Long Island, Rocky Point and Syosset square off at 11 a.m. in a meeting of 2008 state finalists. Suffolk powers Northport and Farmingdale also meet at the same time as do Port Washington and East Meadow.
In an intriguing Fairfield showdown, neighboring teams Ridgefield and Wilton both with first-year coaches (Roy Colsey for the Tigers, John Wiseman for the Warriors) collide.
Now, let’s get to today’s picks.

Looking forward to your interview with Zac, Joe. Hope you ask him about John Jay game he had the winning goal.
Sorry Section 1 Faithful, Somers has no shot at CSH!!. Coming up to the North country to Tool on Hudson Valley as we always do. Seahawks have to much Fire, and an answer to your beloved JO-JO.
CSH 12
Somers 6
Chaminade is really playing well. West Islip’s games have been closer than expected. I think the Flyers may pull it out in OT.
No love for Putnam Valley ! 🙁 I get it not up there with the big boys yet . Yet they do have some Very good Talent.
I see it Somers 9-7…they played Towen tough and Town is far better than CS.
Hey Joe-
You forgot another big one…WI at Chaminade. It’s the MSG Game of the week.
I’m thinking the following:
WI 9 – Cham 7
Manhasset 11 Darien 8 (with Dysenchuk this would be reversed)
GC 12 NC 6 (too young and too early in the season for NC)
Somers 12 CSH 10 (Somers is a little underrated IMO)
CE 14 JJ 9 (long, long bus rides always hurt)
Ridgefield 14 Wilton 10
Mt Lakes 9 SWR 7
lot’s of good ones on tap for today. Tough to pick which to go to. Hope the weather improves as well.
re:lax –
If you reload this page, you will see West Islip-Chaminade. And it is the MSG game of the week. I like your picks.
Dee-up:
Put Valley has looked great. I saw the Tigers at the New Fairfield Shootout and was impressed. We will have plenty more on them in the days/weeks to come. In the meantime, be sure to fill us in with your updates/thoughts on them.
In the meantime, what are everyone’s (very) early thoughts on a possible Rye-Put Valley Class C sectional final?
This kid Matheis is a stud
Oh and if anyone has any info from the JJ-Corning East game that would be greatly appreciated.
So on the Putnam Valley turf today Putnam Valley beats Brewster 9-6 . Valley led the whole game. Congrats the Brenden McCrudden (goalie) . The P.V. face off tandem of JImmy V. & Dan O’G where in total control. And the pure hustle of Putnam Valley players that made many of the plays. Defense take a bow , well done.
Darien Manhasset was a barnburner. Back and forth thoughout. Horrible conditions though. Manhasset’s offense looked good. English was on fire. Darien O was good especially for only second game. Missed the cage from point blank several times. D for Darien definitely looked like it was their second game…they’ll get better over the course of the season I’m sure.
Darien-Manhasset: Great game! Horrible weather! 14-13 Manhasset.
English the difference. 4 in the 1st half and the game winner in the 4th. Gorski was on him first, then Caputo. A lot of others on Manhasset were involved – Tompkins, Heenan, Molinari, Belinsky, Izzo, Moroney all had at least 1 goal. Bolton & Matheis both had good scoring games for Darien. Cappelini did a good job on Foley including a key takeaway with 30 seconds to go in the game. Darien goalie made some great saves in the 2nd half – rejected Koufakis 2-3 times 1 on none. Faceoffs about even.
Darien as expected fast, strong and well coached. They seemed to constantly have an open man on the crease when the ball was worked from behind. Manhasset lackadaisical on defense – Molinari beaten out of the box twice, 2nd slide slow if at all at times. Darien moved the ball very well – missed some open looks.
Both teams had trouble clearing the ball at times (weather?). Manhasset should have won this game by 4-5 but repeatedly made errors to let Darien right back in – #41 on defense (sorry no rosters and too wet!) lost the ball 2-3 times by holding it, Koufakis stepped out of the box, poor clears, etc. Darien capitalized on Manhasset errors effectively.
All in all a great game to watch, even with the rain! Was headed to Somers but too wet.
ridgefield dismantled wilton in 2nd half. 15-3 when i left with 3 minutes left. wilton seen better days
Hey guys,
‘CUSE here. I just got back from Darien and will be back in a bit with a complete recap of Manhasset-Darien. And yes, the comments posted so far are correct. This game lived up to the hype. Be back soon …
Cuse – any updates on Jay/Corning?
According to Jay website they lost to Corning 11-4, ugly!
11- 4 Corning east wins. 6-4 going into the 4th. 4-2 at the half. Corning offense was very good.
JJ seems to have problems in the 4th quarter, but CE is stacked this year so it’s not that bad. Any stats on the game? Who scored for JJ?
Beck 2 goals
Daniello 1 goal
Stewart 1 goal
Indian Nation – Which goal was the “winning goal” in an 11-5 game??
Be sure to check out the main body of this post. There are quite a few score updates, including West Islip beating Chaminade, Ridgefield defeating Wilton and SWR defeating Mountain Lakes, etc.
Taz –
Zac had the goal that snapped a 4-4 tie and Manhasset never trailed after that so I think that’s what Indian Nation means.
Somers/CSH,
Credit to CSH overall with middies led by Kennedy doing alot of damage.
To me just didn’t seem that Somers key players played at the same level of intensity (transition, ground balls) or showed the same skill as seen vs Town.
As for Jo CHS had a pole really closely shadowing him all day and for large parts of the game he was not really a factor. Any strategy that Somers may have had to counteract this was not evident.
I’m sure Somers has better games in them then showed today and they might work on a new and/or improved strategy for playing when Joe is smothered.
Okay let me try this again. Could someone – ANYONE! – explain to me why John Jay sees fit to spend taxpayers’ hard earned dollars for a 17-hour roundtrip to Corning East for a REGULAR SEASON game when the Jay AD is getting laid off and the economy is bad. Even under ideal circumstances it makes no sense especially since John Jay refused to play RIDGEFIELD. I was told the reason was because Jay was an elite program. Well if theyre elite then play Ridgefield which is nationally ranked – not CORNING EAST. And ELITE teams don’t lose 11-4 to Class C teams!
Observer – get a life….Jay is a team loaded with sophmores…next year like last they will play Corning tough…further, the AD did not get laid off and the players paid to go to this game…get your facts right before you open your big mouth!
Look Observer is a bit over the top but he does make some good points. Does it really make sense to travel halfway around the state for a game presumably agaunst a premier team when you refuse to play one just as good if not better (Ridgefield) located about 5-8 milrs from JJ
An elite program doesn’t lose to class C teams? Look at some of the class C teams – Manhasset, Lafayette, CSH – they’re among the best in the country! In a game like lacrosse small schools are often better than huge schools. Let’s see Arlington try to beat Rye. And Corning East may very well be in the top 20 teams in the country, they were two years ago, and that’s when the JJ state finalist team only beat them by a goal! They’re looking like a stacked senior-led team this year, much better than they were last year. And I find it hard to believe that the reason they refused to play Ridgefield was because Jay is an elite program, Ridgefield is better than JJ this year and the JJ coaches sure know that! I think they just wanted to carry on their rivalry with Corning East, why them idk. But yes next year CE loses a lot while JJ will only get better.
First they were “ducking” IP and now they refused to play Ridgefield?
Jeez Louise you are all over board here and still can’t get anything right.
Jay has established home and home relationships with ‘Set, Nisky, and Corning East. It appears they did have to end a similar one with Duxbury when the schedules got cut.
As for Corning East, they are ranked third in NY State in Class B (Not C) by both Laxpower and NYSSWA, just in front of Nisky. It would seem that the section one Class B rep will have to get through the survivor of those two to get through to the LI champ this year.

Why didn’t JJ establish a rivalry with a program 8 miles away – RIDGEFIELD – instead of one 8 hours away (by bus) – CORNING. Could it be becuz RIDGEFIELD beat JJ the last time they played 4 years ago??
Observer,
If John Jay feels that playing on the moon would make them better for a June run, I’d help pay for the rocket fuel.
You are starting to sound like Seriously.
You could just as easily say that for any team close to JJ, why are you obsessing over Ridgefield? I think Corning East doesn’t have much good competition in section 4 and they look to out of section teams like JJ to play some good competition at their level (of course it varies by year which team is better). It’s a good matchup between two good programs and it’s developed into a great rivalry through the years, what more could be said? They want to play teams like JJ because there’s not many good teams near them, and JJ wants to play them as well after the great games they have played against each other year after year.
That’s what they must have been doing, worrying that they might get beat.
The Savs have a long history of worrying about their regular season record, right?
huh?
That’s why they scheduled Huntington 2 years ago, I guess. They’d fared so well the previous time they’d met.
Perhaps Corning East and Duxbury were interested in establishing such rivalries and Ridgefield wasn’t. In any event it is bad form to bail on such arrangements when its your turn to make the trip. (Like GC and Huntington did last year to Jay)
More specifically to this year – perhaps Jay wanted to get a really good opportunity to scout their expected opponents if they make it to the states this year. That’s never been known to help them in the past.

Joe – re: JJ/”Set – a stat only a parent could love!
For anyone who was @ the CSH-Somers game: did CSH play shut off on Marasco all game?
Taz –
Yes they did. Dennis Bonn is an outstanding coach, and he has the benefit of having former South Side head coach Joe Baccarella on his staff now.
Bonn came all the way up to Yorktown to scout the game vs. Somers on Tuesday. It paid off. He came up with an excellent strategy. They shut off JoJo and whenever he dodged past his defender which, he naturally did quite a bit he drew a double slide.
Somers tried to free up JoJo by putting him at midfield.
Greeley coach Vin DeGregorio, Rye coach Brian Dooley and Brewster coach Mike Honey were at the game scouting. Expect to see similar defenses when those teams play the Tuskers.
It was especially effective for the Seahawks because they ran a patient, ball-control offense, limiting the Tuskers’ time of possession.
Again, CSH executed their game plan perfectly. The Seahawks usually do in big games. Ask programs like Manhasset, SWR, Rye, etc.
Though he hasn’t been around as long as some of the legends in the state like Joe Cuozzo, Dennis Bonn is as good a coach as you’ll find. Be sure to check our video interview with him on Tuesday. It’s quite interesting.
Guys,
Let us all remember that Ridgefield is now coached by a guy who would love nothing more than to stick it to both John Jay and Yorktown, so expect Ridgefield to schedule one or both in the coming years.
This much I know to be true:
The LaxLessons Top 25 rankings will be interesting next week.
Stay tuned …
Joe,
What’s up bro? Any chance you’re posting a Somers recap soon? I’m finally dry. And I’m now 6 years old, too, because I watched Wall-E for the 12th time in the last week.
I just posted some comments on the game. Folks can also check out the video interviews in the coming days.
One more point about CSH. This team does have an outstanding middie in Christian Kennedy, but it got seven goals from seven different players. That’s offensive balance and it doesn’t get much better than that.
Wall-E??? Twelve times?? Once was more than enough for me, my friend.
Really Cuse because I believe a team should play whoever they think is going to make them better….they want to play the best teams early so that they can be better prepared for the playoffs…………..SERIOUSLY
Sounds like J-Jay has more than its share of problems against the Upper Tier programs this year. This should have been expected since they graduated a great class last year and were betting the season on a bunch of unproven players, highlighted with many undersized sophomores. The teams seems to lack the J-Jay trademarks of the past size, speed, stamina and lax smarts ( a J-Jay staple, “the knowledge of the game”). The Sav’s will have their work cut out for them this season.
Then, Seriously, history has been made.
You and I actually agree on something.
J has no time for Ridgefield
Observer-
What kind of buses are you traveling on that take eight hours to get to Corning? This must be 1927; what dirt road do you take to get up there anyway?
Joe – Thx for the recap. Sounds like vintage CSH! When they played Manhasset in last year’s Nassau finals, when they didn’t shut off English they had all 6 defenders on his side of the pipe. Agreed Bonn is a great situational coach. Seems likely these 2 teams will meet again in the playoffs in Nassau.
corning is 3 1/2 hours away on a coach bus.
Observer & Oldtimmer,
JJ as other section 1 teams had to reduce their schedule this season. They cancelled their “Wogue” away game. While this probably did not save much money as the Boosters help where they are allowed. I’m sure it did not help JJ’s reputation in “Wogue” as it was JJ’s turn to play there.
and while you guys were watching High School, an upset yesterday, as Duke pounded Va…a triumph of the team over the individuals…Va’s defense looked porous, Ghitelman did not play well…Bratton shot WAY too much (and was missing)…and finally, no sight of Bocklet, who unfortunately, has to play behind two amazing attack men in Gladding and Stanwick…will Princeton now be #1 in D1?
Would CSH have tried a total shutdown on KI?? Should other teams? Might it work? Or at least help?
Good job by Duke. UVa was due for a loss too.
Look while Jay should rightfully be admonished for traveling to Corning which is one hour east of Pittsburgh, PA, the fact is Ridgefield also tried to schedule Yorktown. But like their rival John Jay, Yorktown also ducked the Tigers.
So Yorktown is ducking Ridgefield but they are not afraid to play Melville, St Anthony’s, Darien and Chaminade? Try again…and think it through this time.
JJ is ducking Ridgefield but they will play Corning, St Anthonys, Niskayuna, Manhasset, Syossit. Ridgefield please beat someone good before you speak. JJ has 13 10th graders and JJ kept the schedule just as hard as in the past. Why dont you tell Rye to amp up there schedule.
I don’t think either Yorktown or J-Jay are ducking Ridgefield. !! I think a bit of this stems from the fact that Ridgefield has a pretty good team this year and playing either would validate local bragging right.
17 hours round trip? Was the Jay-CE game played in Canada? Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good rant….
Lax,
Agree with you. Given Town’s sched ridiculous to say they’re trying to duck Ridgefield or any other top school!!
tizo,
Rye IS ramping up the teams that they play. Had pre-season games with Greenwich, Westminster and season games with New Fairfield and North Shore (dont think NS is too strong this yr).
You can see from the blogs that scheduling top out of section 1 games is challenging. Rye is a building program that has only recently started scheduling out of Sect 1 teams, many of whom already have traditional games booked for yrs. But I assume if a coach works hard and early that the can come up with games.
As a Rye fan I’ve always said the team MUST sched tough out of section games to become tougher and increase their exposure with lacrosse fans and media.
Don’t you guys get it. If Yorktown and John Jay lose to the Ward Melvilles and St. Anthonys it is not a threat to them. Those are established nationally known programs. Ridgefield is on the rise. They are fearful of how a loss to Ridgefield would be perceived, so they refuse to play a game.
As for Ridgefield beating quality teams, Ridgefield beat John Jay the only time they agreed to play. Ridgefield also beat Greenwich three times last year.
Tuesday’s games should be very interesting —- J-Jay ~vs~Somers and Yorktown~ vs~Greeley . Can the J-J Defense stop Marasco and Co? We will see if Greely is ready to move up to inro the Section 1 Elite.
John Jay and Yorktown are not ducking Ridgefield thats just not smart to even say. They both have very tough schedules and its hard to fit in every team so just be happy that Ridgefield is playing well, but dont use it as an excuse to try and say that other teams are ducking them.
Rugger
thought Wogue was a last minute fill in for Huntington or GC last year
if it was supposed to be a home and home then not fulfilling that promise would also be bad form – if that’s what happened
Tony
Given that Ridgefield and Lewisboro border each other, such a rivalry would be a natural
Also given that the attitude of the Jay coaching staff has basically been anyone/anywhere – doubt the lack of a history between the two teams comes from the Jay side. (apparently Ridgefield is constrained to just 4 out of league games) This year, if there was a change of heart in Ridgefield, Jay’s losing two out of section games from the schedule may have been an issue.
TonyTiger is most likely a naive little tiger cub. He is perhaps too young to remember Ridgefield regularly getting thumped by JJ and several years by Yorktown. If he had bothered to check with an older wiser Ridgefielder he would know that Ridgefield was the one who dropped JJ after they beat them two years ago. Pretty sure Yorktown stopped scheduling Ridgefield a few years back quite simply because Ridgefield was not very good. Those of us who have been around a while are hoping this year is the beginning of good things but are realistic in knowing that this is a special group coming through.
How about Chris Daniello two hat tricks in a row for cuse.
8-5 Somers over Jay.
12-5 Town over Greeley
I Agree on Slacrosse’s predictions
I dont think the yorktown greeley game will be as big of a blowout as you think…
Does anyone know if Greeley has played a game on field turf, can they handle the ground balls, Bounce shots, can they be as keep up on the fast field. I think it might be a rude awakening when they play at yorktown. How many quality defenders do they have, enough to cover KI, Ranagan, and Casey. Do they have enough attackers to make a difference against the veteran D Yorktown will bring to the field. Can they clear against a tenacious midfield and attack of Yorktown. we will see and i cant wait for the blogs tuesday nite, will Greeley be eating their words or will Yorktown eat their pride
LaxMan, greeley practices on turf a couple times a week, so it will not be a problem for them. and as it was stated in the other discussion we were having, greeley has 4 great defenders, so your top three (KI, Ranagan, and Casey) will be well covered. I think we have the speed and ability to clear well.
I’m really looking forward to Tuesday night, its going to be a fun matchup to watch, if anything, it will be a close game
Glax
do u go to greeley or do u just like lacrosse
Glax, I dont really know where you get your arrogance from but even the fact that u use Horace Greeley lacrosse in the same sentence as Yorktown lacrosse is quite hilarious…
Im sure you do have 4 good dmen, but you really think they have any shot in the world at containing Interlicchio and Ranagan..(might wanna think that one over again bud..)
Kudos to Greeley kids for playing hard and im sure practicing hard this year but to say you guys are gonna have it be a close game, at yorktown, on charlie murphy field, is probably something you dont want to do….
You can only hope the #7 team in the country doesnt read ur words or the game might be called after the 1st half…
Ytown-19 Greeley-3
I think Greeley’s D will keep the Quakers on the peripherary in this game. Greeley has a lot of potential this season. Let’s not go calling for 16-goal spreads. That just wouldn’t be responsible.
Truth is even if their solid D does a nice job, they don’t have anywhere near enough offensively against Town’s stellar D.
I think Yorktown will win something like 11-4, or as Slacrosse said, 12-5. And I do believe there are Section 1 teams that will play Town closer than that the rest of the way, but often times goal-differentials don’t tell the story.
Look at Niskayuna. If you never seen Nisky play, you should because they are always fundamentally sound, especially defensively. They are like a super version of Rye in that they could win 8-3 and the game would seem like 20-0.
You shut down and KI and theres a chance no doubt. Greeley’s offence is going to have to prove something this game if they want to stay in this game with the nations best.
Coming,
That’s the $1 million question: Can anyone shut down KI? And if so, will another Yorktown player or two not named Ranagan step up and truly carry the load. I like Casey. I like Lieberman. I just wonder if they can do it against the better competition. I do believe Greeley will try to shut off KI, but even then I don’t think the Quakers have nearly enough to truly pull off the upset.
Expect the Jays and Melvilles of the world to try to shut off KI. We’ll learn then if this Yorktown team is truly special or just another really good Yorktown team. I think the jury is still out on that.
I just cannot fathom Yorktown going 16-0 during the regular season even with them being as good as they appear to be. Chaminade will be tough. Darien is always tough. Melville? If Yorktown doesn’t beat them this year they may never because Melville is clearly not the same.
Jay will slow it down. The Indians’ coaching is THAT good. They’ll try to hang and pull it off at the end.
Yorktown is not a world beater … yet.
‘Cuse –
I think the real question is when KI is held in check (and it will happen – even though I spotted an “S” underneath his jersey) by a quality program, can Yorktown still win without him scoring say, four or more goals? That is the question. It’s going to happen and I guess we will get an answer. I have always felt one of the marks of a good team is balanced scoring on offense. Look at CSH vs. Somers seven different players scored goals even though Somers held Cornell-bound Christian Kennedy in check.
Now, can Greeley be the one to contain KI? Stay tuned. An interesting matchup if it happens would be Derek Katchis on KI. (Though I think Greeley may play some zone as well.) The two know each other’s styles from practicing all summer for Empires. I do believe we will see teams start to shut out KI, with a backer and slide packages, similar to what CSH employed against JoJo Marasco. I do know Vin DeGregorio is an outstanding defensive coach. So it will be interesting to see what he comes up with vs. Ytown, his alma mater.
Later today we will be presenting a video interview with Derek Katchis. You can learn more about him then, and when we put it up, I think it will be the starting signal for everyone to weigh in with their predictions not only on that game tomorrow, but the John Jay-Somers game as well.
Laxman,
Yeah lots of focus on whether G’s D can slow down/shut down KI/JR but Town has Casey, Lieberman, and others to score. Also G must score alot of goals to win and they’ve never faced the likes of Fennesey/Fox, others and Mikey B.
There is a chance the John Jay at Somers game will be moved from 6:15 to 7 tomorrow. As soon as I know, you folks will know.
Greeley at Yorktown is set for 4:30 tomorrow.
It’s now official. JJ at Somers starting time has been moved to 7 p.m. tomorrow.
Joe, What makes you so sure KI will even be contained by anyone this year? I mean the kid diid put up 8g’s vs one of Long Islands best dman…I clearly do not see anyone in section one that can guard him and unless Darien, Ward Melville, and Chaminade found an extra year of eligibility for Stephen McElduff or Ric Beardsley, I really dont see Interlicchio being stopped, (unless you shut him off completely with a long pole)
I agree moreRings. I don’t think you can contain KI without shutting him off. After the St. Anthony’s game in which he had eight goals of course, Dave Marr told me Yorktown is preparing for just that the rest of the way. Somers tried primarily a zone and was unable to contain him. I think when you have a dominant player like that, you have to shut him off. As Yorktown sees this and adjusts, it will be better prepared for the postseason because of it. As I said, establishing offensive balance is crucial for the ‘Huskers if they hope to contend for a state title.
Joe your absolutley right, and I agree completely…Town is going to need the likes of Leiberman, Casey, Ty Shuldt, etc.. to really step up when KI and JR are shutt off…
Kevin and John, go get us some hardware!!!
Joe – like your comment about Town and need to show depth. I would not put too much emphasis on an early St. A game, as impressive as it was.
After some scouting on Town primary options, capable teams (Chaminade, Melville, Darien, JJ) will slide their D quickly and the third and forth options after KI and Ranagan will need to hit the back of the net. Teams would be crazy not to stick a pole on Ranagan and send the quick slide on KI.
Look what happened to JoJo recently. Somers did not have a second option to break down their defender against a solid, but not ‘great’ LI team.

8-5 Somers over Jay.
12-5 Town over Greeley
I bet the Sav brothers flip if this happens : Jay at 2-3, with 2 losses in a row! When was the last time that happende?
Casey, McCarthey, Leiberman, Porcelli and a few others can all score if teams key on KI and Ranagan, Mabus looks like an up and comer!
Others will have to step up as the simple math says KI and JR combine for 9 Goals per game (7/2) for a team averaging 13. Didn’t say the others couldn’t step up, but a coach would have to take that chance based upon early returns. My guess is Casey will have a lot more open looks as season continues.
Jay lost to Suffern and Yorktown back to back in 2003. Suffern, actually beat Yorktown that year also, and won the section one power league. Town recovered from the Suffern loss and went on to win the state championship.
