New York Class B state champion Yorktown’s number of junior commitments has just doubled.
The latest verbal comes from defenseman Tyler Makar, who verballed to St. Joseph’s University, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
Makar, who is coming off a standout season in football as a wide receiver, joins Hartford-bound goaltender Liam Donnelly as 2016 YHS commits.
At St. Joe’s, Makar will join former YHS faceoff specialist Danny Manning at St. Joseph’s. Manning is a sophomore midfielder for the Hawks.
The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Makar is a lefty defender with good range, size and strong stick skills.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Tyler on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The location of the school, the size and the strength of the athletic/academic program.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered schools such as Siena, West Point, St. John’s and Drexel.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I feel that my stick skills are my greatest advantage. I like to have the ball in my hand and start breaks. I also pride myself on good overall defense.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
There’s always room for improvement in every aspect. I’m always trying to improve my game.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
My dad introduced me to lacrosse when I was 8 years old.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the No Limit Ballers in the summer. I attended Maverik Showtime and Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip Lacrosse Showcase.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank the entire Yorktown Lacrosse coaching staff and my parents for helping and supporting me through this entire process.
