Brian Willetts thought he had found a perfect college fit just over two years ago.
That’s when the Smithtown East HS (NY) attackman became the first rising sophomore in the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for lacrosse to give a verbal in the summer of 2012. As first reported here when it happened, Willetts committed to the University of North Carolina.
But Willetts has had a change of plans. If you were with us last week on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section, you know Willetts has decommitted from UNC and committed to the University of Notre Dame.
It’s a huge pickup for coach Kevin Corrigan and the Irish as Willetts is one of the top Class of 2015 attackmen in the nation.
Willis perfect size at 6-foot-3, is a strong dodger and rider and is a strong athlete with one of the fastest, most accurate shots of any varsity player anywhere.
Willis will enter Notre Dame officially as a Class of 2016 commit for the 2016-17 school year after taking a post-grad year at a prep school to be determined.
Now, let’s hear from Brian on the reasons behind his decision.
When did you decided to decommit from UNC and why?
After an opportunity to play in the county championship and Long Island championship, I was fortunate to play in the Under Armor tournament. As a result, I heard from more schools and became interested in Notre Dame.
Because it was such a tough decision between two great schools, I finally made the decision a week ago.
What other colleges, in addition to Notre Dame, were you looking at?
None of the other schools were a consideration expect for Notre Dame. It has the perfect balance of academics and lacrosse.
When did you visit Notre Dame and how did that go?
I took a visit the first weekend of October. I went to the Notre Dame vs. Stanford football game. I felt like I fit in with the players on the team and they made me feel apart of it.
Why did you decide to have a pg year and what prep school will you attend?
Notre Dame is rigorous academically and an extra year will help me excel on and off the field.
I haven’t decided where I’ll be going to prep school yet but I plan on visiting schools within the next few weeks.
