Garden City vs. Syosset.
When it comes to marquee matchups, it’s been the unofficial lid lifter for the start of a new season seven years running on Long Island, and because LI starts the season earliest, for the entire tristate as well.
Yesterday, GC won for the sixth time during that span, pulling away for a 6-3 win. The game had been tied at 2-2 at the half.
Villanova-bound Kieran Byrnes finished with three goals. James Sullivan won 11 of 13 faceoffs for the Trojans. Luke McDaid had three assists. Syosset had three different goal scorers: Nick Hatzipetrakos, Anthony Carchietta and Mac O’Keefe.

Now, to today.
As we all know, Smithtown West starts the season with great expectations. Just check the LaxLessons Tristate Top 25 preseason rankings.
The Bulls start their schedule with a good test, playing perennial Nassau County power Cold Spring Harbor in a 5 p.m. game at CSH. CSH has made five straight Nassau County Class C title-game appearances, losing each time.
Also of note today, Nassau County Class A finalist Port Washington starts its season by hosting Locust Valley at 4:30 p.m.
