From press release
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore Sam Llinares tallied three goals and added one assist and senior Torin Varn added two goals to lead the Hofstra Pride to a 7-5 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes in a non-conference game at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon.
It was Hofstra’s third consecutive victory as the Pride improved to 3-2 on the season. The Buckeyes dropped their second straight game to fall to 1-4 on the year.
Llinares, a 2014 Tewaaraton Watch selection, recorded his second hat-trick of the season, scoring twice in the first half and once in the fourth quarter. Varn scored twice for the second time in the last three games. Senior Drew Coholan added a goal and an assist while red-shirt sophomore Korey Hendrickson added two assists. Junior Chris Selva tallied eight saves in the Pride cage for his third win of the season.
The Buckeyes were led by Turner Evans with two goals and one assist while Jesse King and Reegan Comeault each posted one goal and one assist. Greg Dutton made six saves in the Ohio State cage.
Ohio State opened the scoring 5:06 into the contest as Sean Giampietro scored off a pass from King. But the Pride responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead 4:06 into the third quarter. Llinares started the run with just 49 seconds to play in the first quarter, bull-rushing into the middle for his eight goal of the season. Varn gave the Pride the lead for good, scoring his sixth goal of the year, from Coholan 4:45 into the second quarter. Llinares scored his second of the game on a spectacular one-handed shot five minutes later. Senior Lance Yapor gave the Pride a 4-1 lead with a man-up goal a minute later for a three-goal lead at halftime.
Hofstra added to the lead 4:06 into the third quarter as Coholan scored his fourth of the year, on the man-up, for a 5-1 lead.
The Buckeyes closed to within two at 5-3 as Evans scored a man-up goal at the midway point of the third and an all-even goal 1:19 into the fourth quarter. But Llinares scored another spectacular goal coming around the cage with 9:18 to play and Varn added a man-up goal just inside the 7:00 mark to boost the Pride lead to 7-3.
Comeault would score 36 seconds later and King would tally his 14th of the year with 3:31 to play. But Hofstra would shut them down from there to boost their all-time series lead over the Buckeyes to 3-0. Each team took 24 shots with the Pride holding a 25-24 advantage in ground balls. The Pride did convert on three of six man-up opportunities.
Hofstra returns to action next Saturday, March 15 when they host the Blue Hens of Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association opener at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 3 p.m.
